  • We head to my 30 acre no-till corn field and find that the yield isn't much different than the year before.

How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

One factor affecting corn yield on no-till ground is how much slower the ground warms up which delays emergence and really effects how evenly plants emerge. No till scenerios can also negatively affect maintaining consistent planting depth as the row units cut across the field...that is where hydraulic downforce really shines. There is also a bit of compaction in this field...all these factors add up and detract from yield in a year like this year, but 200 bu/acre is still a decent number considering the weather we were up against. Keeping accurate yield calibrations has also been tough this year with such a range in moisture and crop flow. Many customers are calibrating their monitors multiple times throughout the season to keep up with the variability in the crop. Running different heads has also added to the challenge in keeping a good calibration.

Have you been experimenting with cover crops? I'm curious if there's any studies on ground temperatures of tilled vs no tilled?

    • @andytuck13
      @andytuck13 Před 4 lety

Midwest Allis Acres cover crops/residue trap in the frost keeping it colder plus add to the expense. I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to find data on temps of tilled ground vs no till but that’s common physics. No till has a higher density which requires more Calories to warm than a lower density composition.

All I see are negatives in this NO TILL field. Compaction as well as the corn stalks remaining are not decomposing enough causing a crust layer (like in a lawn thatch and compaction doesn't allow moisture organic fertilizers to soak in) instead of tilling can you AIRATE the field? I'm not a farmer I just know how to grow thick dark green weed free grass. All plants need air to get to the roots to grow

Christopher Berg the crop is rotated 50/50 it was soybeans last year so in reality there wasn’t much for previous crop residue. An Aerway or similar aerater would be nice but they are costly pieces of equipment.

When dad started row cropping he had an early K Gleaner with a 12ft sold gain platform, 2 row corn head, 2 barg wagens, and a 64 1ton Ford truck with a homemade woodin bed lifted with a jarie rigged sizer hoyest. He worked with that up in to the late 90s with the addition of another K Gleaner with a 13ft flex grain platform and a 3row corn head and 3 gravity wagens. Anyway the moral of all this story is he didn't have all this technology we have today he worked with what he had and didn't worry about the yeld tell a bet latter into harvest when he done the math.
I'm honestly glad to see y'all kind of working around the same principle thank you Ryan for the great video

No till corn will respond with putting your fertilizer under the ground, put all your dry fertilizer on with the planter, it will slow planting down but your yields will increase dramatically

Most of it we don't really keep track of whose is whose. We all have equipment in the game and I'd say the amount of ground we farm is proportional to the amount of land we each run. We all help each other out too which is valuable in itself. The truck is different because it's got more than just fuel costs to cover, like registration, insurance, and the cost to maintain it with brakes and other repairs.

No-till works best if you stick with it year after year. I have fields that have been no-till for 25 years. The ground is much less compacted and will absorb a heavy rain without washing on hillsides. Of course you can’t tear up the ground at harvest. After about 5 straight years of No-till great things start happening to the soil. An explosion of earthworms and the hard pan from tillage is gone.

Not a farmer so I have a question. The NO TILL land can you AIRATE that land like we do for a compacted lawn? There is also something you can spray on the lawn to naturally fix the compaction (it foams up a bit when you apply it ) allowing water to soak in and stay put also there are products to help retain moisture in the soil during dry spells. Basically can what us Lawn Guys do for perfectly healthy lawns be transferred to your no till? When your planting does that airate the soiled enough to allow water to penetrate. The way I look at the situation in the no till is like MASSIVE compaction and thatch build up not allowing whatever fertilizers and water to soak in. It's all about the root growth for any plant so they can suck up the nutrients as fast as possible in our short growing season

In your area. I believe light tillage is a must. You don't have the extra weeks of decomposition as your counter parts do a little south of you. The rolling hills don't help either. Your yields will always be based off the soil web. The sooner you can get the byproduct to breakdown into its minerals. The healthier your soil web will be to feed your next crop. Just my thoughts. Best wishes.

Not a bad idea, though I'm not sure if the trailer's legs can withstand a full load, and there's also the issue of getting them in the field. We've had to load in the driveways and on the road for most of the farms so dropping them off usually isn't an option, but it could be on a year that's more dry.

Do you have crop rotation on all of your no-till fields? By the way: the average yield for corn in Germany in 2017 was 156.13 Bushels Per Acre.

I have a question about the ads. For you to get paid for them, would I have to watch the whole ad, or do you still get paid if I click skip ad? I usually skip, but if it means more revenue for you, I’ll watch them, or at least let them play 😉

I get paid per thousand and per view, so watching pays more, but you’re already a member so I can’t ask much more from you 😂

I've considered that, but I'm afraid the vibration and hammering will break bolts. Had it happen once already and the hole is getting pitted

I feel like no till is really only good for desert type of climates where the it’s dry and hot and the soil is eroded
