The Dreamcast more better games. Wii U is actually super versatile you can play Wii U, Wii, Gamecube and virtual console games off the bat. Then you can hack it and you
...till your hard drive dies and you have to rip them again. You see the hard drive is encrypted to that specific WiiU console. The WiiU is trash. It was the console that cured me of dealing with Nintendo. Such a shame I loved the Wii.
@@1stfloorguy59 No I am not blaming the Wii U for the hard driver failure. I'm blaming the Wii U for not allowing you to make backups effectively. The Wii U uses a proprietary file system, does not provide backup software, and is encrypted to the particular unit. So your only option if a hard drive fails is to install games one at a time. Need to backup your save data and Mii characters? Good luck with that. There are clunky methods involving copying to a Nintendo DS, but again not much that's convenient or supported. I suggest you get your facts straight before attacking strangers on the Internet, particularly when your attack is a straw man and you demonstrate a lack of knowledge on the subject.
@@sammyfromsydney my facts straight? Like formating your back up harddrive threw the wii u menu and then Copying the data over... No shit you can't just copy it over with your computer.

It’s crazy how much Wii U modding changed. I’m back after modding my Wii U since the online servers shut down. I mainly did it for pretendo (although it required aroma which I don’t think yours supports from the beginning of the video) It’s crazy to see the wara wara plaza integrate with miiverse which they restored. I rarely saw the online stuff of the Wii U since I didn’t have home internet till late 2019
Wow. Really cool, seems like you put in a ton of tinkering work. I don't want to mod my onlu wii u, but I have an old wii I've been wanting to mod because I don't care if I mess it up and brick it.
25:40 Shovel Knight got all the "Treasure Trove" modes if you got the original game (i.e. the version that is one your disc) as updates once they released, at no additional charge. So the final update that you're missing is the final King Knight campaign, which again is still classified as an update. =) As far as I know Yachtclub Games are the first and only game studio to do this kind of thing and it's really awesome of them!
The extra DLC are stretch goals from their original Kickstarter campaign. Yacht Club Games extended the perks to everyone who purchased the game. (which was generous of them). Their PSN version even included Cross-Buy/Cross-Save. I originally bought it on the PS3, several years ago, for $5, and it showed up on my PS Vita, then later on my PS4, and PSTV, all for free. And, of course, all with the free DLC. I also bought the physical copies for all of the available platforms (5 IIRC), so they got their support from me.
I love modding all my consoles that I can. The Wii U and the New 2DS are my go to consoles for old school games. I actually keep my Wii U on my bedside table instead of in the living room with the TV. It's just so convinient.
I'm 100% a physical collector, but like a more typical collector I just like having the ownership. But I 100% respect your further dedication and, almost OCD about wanting to make sure each of your games work from beginning-to-end. I know my copy of Super Mario Sunshine, for example, crashes consistently at the same point in a specific boss fight mid-game. Even though I can't play it in theory, I still just like owning it; owning the case, and disc. That's the most important thing for me, and my weird OCD thing haha
The talk about disc ripping reminded me - did you know the Dolphin emulator team created a new, lossless compression format for GameCube and Wii games? Results vary game-by-game but it can save a ton of space and can be converted back to .iso images easily. Wouldn't surprise me if it saved a lot of space for a collection like yours!
@@NobleRaider2747 Better, even. .rvz is another lossless format that can be converted/restored from Dolphin itself without having to keep any extra junk files to restore them.
It’s really interesting you had one game that just didn’t rip out of the box. As a music guy, I have a few CDs like that. I rip them with Exact Audio Copy and there’s a few that just don’t work, and never did. The discs are in perfect shape and play fine on their own but won’t rip properly no matter what, straight out of the packaging.
Hey Adam, I’ve had my Wii U soft-modded since 2017 and I’d like you to know a few things. Firstly, the Coldboot Haxchi icon that says ‘DONT TOUCH ME’ is completely fine to open. At first I believed that if I had opened, my Wii U would brick itself somehow or something. The only purpose of the name is to alert anyone in the Data Management settings to make sure they don’t delete that application or to move it into the HDD as THAT will brick the Wii U. So you don’t need to have hidden in a folder all the way at the back of the home menu. Secondly, I’ve also had my Wii U connected to the internet with the 99.99.99E spoof firmware and I don’t have it set to block Nintendo’s servers. This lets me still access the eShop and download patches for any HDD or Disc games. Nothing has happened to my Wii U since 2017 and I still use it. Great video!
Quick question: Are you able to access the Japanese eShop? I know there were a few Virtual Console releases that were Japan-only, and hoped to download those to my US Wii U.
That was a scummy move by Nintendo to pull the remaining stock of WII-U off the shelves before the switch came out especially when people wanted to buy the console before it was gone and the games are a lot of fun.
No it wasnt,if you didnt supported why you should get one when it not matter just cuz you wanted it for dirt cheap, at least they sold them on their page i would burn them all
They had their chance. Serves 'em right for just "waiting it out" because "Wii U sucks". But then as soon as they get harder to find, people want them? Those people can get fucked.
Considering buying a Wii U, I love the GUI, and the e-Shop. It's like a non portable 3DS, but with more features. Plus it'll add to all the Nintendo consoles my family has gathered. (6, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Switch)

Good point on your video, I'm doing the same thing with my game collection, although I have much smaller collection but it would be nice to have all my games within the console
It would definitely be awesome to see a video about ripping games from disk! Also do you have a pdf of EU&JP games you have! Yakuza on my Wii U would be step up What monitor are you using
Not a PDF, but I posted it below when other people asked. It's in the comments. It's an Auzai portable monitor. I included it in a pickups video a couple months ago.
I wouldn't worry about disc rot or scratched discs when it comes to Blu-Ray grade media. They are a way higher quality disc media than CD or DVD. They will likely outlive the user. Even if they were born after the Wii was released.
Yes please do that video on disc rot/transferring games to your computer hard drive. That is something I have always been interested in but haven’t found enough tips for that problem yet.
Have to come here and say that it's been a blast playing the Wii U with my 4 year old in the last four months (Thanks COVID-19 /s). We got it as a gift from my mother inlaw some 3 years ago because she wasn't using it. We got also a few Wii and Wii U games with it. I was never a Nintendo guy (our first household console was a Master System II because the Mega Drive was too expensive for us. So me and my brother squeezed those 8-bit the best we could until we got a PC and in 97, a PSX. So 7 years later Sega/PSX guy meets Nintendo girl and 12 years later my kid was born). So in the last 4 months we have been buying some used Wii U games from CeX (UK based I think, but they have stores in my country) because simply my kid loves the Wii U. And I started also to like it a lot, specially Super Mario 3D World since I play it together with my little gamer. At the moment its the game system we use the most and still have two more games coming from Amazon as a gift for my kid (Mario Tennis and Paper Mario). Just can't wait to play them with my little boy.
Ahhhh Adam. Good to see one of your videos again. It's been a long time. I remember all of the rad Dreamcast videos you've made. This one is no exception. Well done. You just made me purchase a wii u. However, I'm a cheap ass and bought a Japanese Wii U. Still waiting for it's arrival, however I know about the region locking of the game pads as well... This console didn't come with one. I found one locally very cheap but it is obviously gonna be North American. Any ideas if it's possible to get them to work together?
Love mine so much I bought 2 more. One I’ve left stock for the kids. Got all the disc based games I wanted and bought any VC games I thought I had to have. This system was up until my dad passed, helped me through the lockdown and after, to distract me from the grief of his passing so sudden. Kids still love it for Just Dance (my daughter) and everything else for my boys. Me I modded one and backed up all my disc games, bought another pre modded with everything I could ever want. The modded ones basically can do everything Nintendo made prior to the switch. Makes this the ultimate Nintendo retro console. Mind you I have a fully tricked out OG Wii as I still haven’t managed to figure out how to get the Wad files installed on the Wii U, though I think I made a breakthrough on that front and once I get them back from my moms I can see if I finally “Figured it out”. My main focus as of late is my RGH 360 and my modded Wii and Wii U’s. They just do too much of the games I play regular. I’ll get around to the PlayStation stuff later, already got a modded Vita with 512gb SD card loaded with psp and vita only stuff. My goal is to mod a PS2, 3 and eventually a 4. I’ll wait a few years on the PS5 there just isn’t anything out I have to play for it. Kids will get one as soon as stock is sorted. Won’t support scalpers. Thanks Adam I know you sometimes read the TLDR and seem to actually give a shit.
Very useful mods. My extent of Wii U modding was using linux on it. On the topic of the console being harder to find, here in Toronto Wii U's prices were like $70-$100 at Pawns. That was only a year ago.
Excellent video Adam just curious is there a way to use a switch pro controller on the Wii U ? enjoying your back catalogue how are you enjoying your Xbox one X, sad it never saw it's full potential.
Great topic Adam! Personally, I prefer waiting 5 to 7 years before thinking of modding any defunct consoles. Reason is that the modding community evolves so quickly and I believe the early mods have too many flaws.
Adam, if you don't like the Wii because of the controller you might consider installing USB Loader on the vWii and putting a forwarder on the Wii U menu. Pretty sure the USB Loader lets you use a Gamecube controller, so you can boot Wii games with Gamecube controller support without touching the Wii remote. Hacking the vWii is easy as hell if you haven't done it already.
What's that portable monitor you are using? I was just thinking the other day to get one, and it may make a nice setup for the wiiU in my home office so as to not get my living room setup crowded.
I always say that a modded wii u is the best console you can have. It is sad how many people still dont know that. Tip: you can find replicas of gamecube controllers from hori and other companies and it improves the experience of gamecube (and even n64) a lot. Unfortunately the hori controller doesnt recognize analog presses on the triggers nor the shortcut combo that nintendont uses for mid presses on the triggers, but the competitor whose name I forgot recognizes the shortcut. It is used in games such as mario sunshine and rogue squadron 2 and 3.
I got a Switch a few years back. It was my first console since the PS2/XBOX/GameCube era, however my boss gave me his old 360 and Wii U that they never really played (about 20 hours between the two). I’ve been giving the 360 plenty of use but haven’t found anything to do with the Wii U since I have a Wii in my collection already and only had a couple of kids games with it when I got it. I’m really excited about the idea of hacking it. Edit: I forgot to mention, but i have big hands and brought shoulders and the game pad is surprisingly comfortable.
Not sure if you're aware Adam, but you can play online on a hacked Wii U. You just need to change the DNS and online play works no problems. Nintendo sees all installed games as genuine and there is no risk of a ban either FYI.
Just a friendly PSA since you mentioned that you didn't mod it yourself. Your Wii U is running CBHC which makes critical changes to the internal system files. Do not do a "factory reset", do not delete the account, do not delete the game serving as the entry point. You'll need to follow a safe procedure, if you ever decide to update the mod, try to mod it yourself or even give away the Wii U (unlikely in your case, I suppose). I recently got a Wii U myself and have modded it too. I love it. It is the first console I've bought for myself since Dreamcast.
yeah, If someone is not willing to get some basic knowledge how this hack works, he should stick with haxchi instead of cbhc which is much safer (cbhc isn't unsafe in any way but has the potential to brick the console).I'm pretty sure this guy didn't even backup the nand (which at least gives you a chance restoring the console if you did mess up). Also don't let other people hack the console for you (everybody can do this by themself, its really easy. don't use youtube tutorials)
Amazing video. i am also a backup freak and it's perfectly normal to do that. i think everyone should back up all their stuff, consoles, whatever...I use Acronis 11. it is a bit old. But such great software. Just flashed my PS4 hard drive to 1 file.
Back when I had a Wii U, I ripped them to an EXT HDD using that Wii U installer program and then transferred them on my computer using an FTP software I believe.
I've seen people do wonderful things with Wii U controllers. I thought it was cool that you can use them as TV remotes; people have drones with onboard cams hacked into these.
@@tw3nz0r I’m more surprised the workers didn’t want it. Usually gamers work at GameStop. Who doesn’t want a random Japanese game in a collection, even if you can’t play it

I bought this console just for Fatal Frame, and it's totally worth it. That game is designed to take advantage of the hardware like no other. Seriously. That why it's so cumbersome to play on emulator. Because you have to keep switching between camera view (wii u Pad) and the Main screen (Tv Screen). You can only see ghosts in your Wiiu pad, not on the main screen. Also you can move arround thee wiiu mote as a camera and its' impressible immersive. Because you search around the ghosts by actually moving around the wiiu pad like a real camera very much the same mechanic as VR glasses you move around the wiiu pad and it's as if the game was all around you. This hardware is the perfect hardware for this game.Even the switch cannot play it because you cannot have simultaneous screens. I dunno why there were no more games for this platform, it certainly could have done very well with at least another quality title.
Very nice. There's still half a dozen wii u exclusives I need to play thru. I really enjoyed my time with the console. I'm defintely gonna mod it at some point. Wait so this way of hacking doesn't connect to the e shop, can u still get patches? (possibly rhetorical question, typing before vid is finished. Bad habit, I know)
I got so damn lucky. I bought the Wii U when it was new but always wanted a second one. Last year I bought a Zelda edition Wii U with the Gamepad plus a pro controller all flawless, with all cables for FIFTY BUCKS!!! So lucky.
I feel sorry for the states having lost their CeX stores in 2018, I buy all my Dreamcast, Wii U and PS Vita games, accessories and consoles there. Got my 2nd Dreamcast (for local LAN parties) for £50 with everything including a VMU, and my Wii U for £80 with the Gamepad and all cables. They're definitely easier to come by here in the UK than in the US/Asia. I recommend paying a CeX store a visit, or having them deliver to you, if you're ever in the UK and looking for games or hardware here.
Maybe I didn’t listen through all the way and you addressed this but my Wii U has no problem playing the UAE version of Xenoblade chronicles X did they finally change the region locking because I was under the impression that there was no region locking
Love my modded WiiU got one alittle over a year ago and use a 500 GB HD. Pretty much gave me all the games I wanted which at first was Breathe of the Wild. About 3 months ago I finally beat BOTW and now look to conquer other WiiU titles I have on that HD....
Good video, really a lot of solid points. A lot of people praise this console for emulation and blah blah blah, but its only really good for Wii U games. That 1-2TB drive is enough for most/full library including digital only games. The main problem like author of this video said, is that this console does not have a proper backup launcher you have to manually install every game, that is such a pain. Compared so PS3 with CFW where you can mount your NTFS drive or play games via PS3NETSRV. Loadiine GX2 was a good try, but have not been completed, only works via SD card with limited speeds. I would like to add more. All emulation on Wii U is based on vWii. Retroarch port is poor, PPSSPP port was promising but ended at alpha state. Wii U has no proper plugin system, and you are still dependand on gamepad, even with Haxchi. Homebrew only works with gamepad or original wii u pro controller which are really hard to find. Playing multiplayer games is not that nice on wii u, someone has to use the gamepad, Nintendont only support x1 USB controller. Wii U does not have gamecube ports, to be honest Wii or GC is better for GC games. Its only good if you care about single player experience with gamepad/original pro controller, multiplayer not working properly. Wii games also require wiimotes. What i miss is that Wii U should have universal plugin for Wii/GC games to work on it, instead you have to rely on manual annoying injections if you want to play games with pro controller or gamepad on main screen. Also you cannot connect Wii hdd while it is in Wii U mode because it will ask for format. Anyway, system is good for ones who have a lot of time to set it up and have money to buy x12 controllers for 4 player couch coop. PS3 is much better homebrew machine because you can play PS1/2/3/PSP ISO files with same 4xDS3 controllers without any problem, and DS3 are easy to find.
Wii U is a very good console when modded.
I know most games got ported to Switch but I still love Wii U.

...till your hard drive dies and you have to rip them again. You see the hard drive is encrypted to that specific WiiU console. The WiiU is trash. It was the console that cured me of dealing with Nintendo. Such a shame I loved the Wii.
@@sammyfromsydney your blaming a hard drive failure on the wii u? You could of had a back up of the games you downloaded. No harddrive lasts forever
Mr. Koralik returns!!!
I've a modded WiiU, actually working on making my own youtube channel to show how gamecube, Wii and WiiU games look when running through mClassic. I've a similar set up on my PS3 - use it to run psx and PS2 games through HDMI with mClassic. Mostly inspired by your videos featureing the mClassic Adam keep up the great work.
Perfect, I will subscribe! Thanks!
Please!
I want to see games such as go vacation, ribbit king, klonoa and other wii and gc games with the m classic.
My channel has gone up under the name zombie techpad for anyone interested. Hope that's ok for me to post that here Adam. I aim to drop a short 7-12min video everyday for the next few weeks
It took a while, but I finally manage to get the whole library into their folder, your video was the inspiration (or curse lol).
Woooo more Wii u stuff :P
Wow. Really cool, seems like you put in a ton of tinkering work. I don't want to mod my onlu wii u, but I have an old wii I've been wanting to mod because I don't care if I mess it up and brick it.
Great video. I would definitely like to see a video of how you ripped the discs to your computer :D
Interesting video! You have me considering getting a Wii U.
25:40 Shovel Knight got all the "Treasure Trove" modes if you got the original game (i.e. the version that is one your disc) as updates once they released, at no additional charge.
So the final update that you're missing is the final King Knight campaign, which again is still classified as an update. =)
As far as I know Yachtclub Games are the first and only game studio to do this kind of thing and it's really awesome of them!
Can I still download the updates?
@@GT6SuzukaTimeTrials
On an unhacked WiiU, of course!
But also on a hacked one you should be able to using the tools Adam talked about
Nice vid man. Thank you
You should make that video about CD rip I enjoyed watching this video Adam.
Great Video! I’m just about to mod mine next week.
I appreciate your enthusiasm
Love how these videos are about "educational purposes". It is what it is, don't sugar coat it!
Well, what else would it be? Entertainment purposes?
You put me on to that upgraded battery. Thanks!!
Yeah, .nkit
@@NobleRaider2747 Better, even. .rvz is another lossless format that can be converted/restored from Dolphin itself without having to keep any extra junk files to restore them.
It’s really interesting you had one game that just didn’t rip out of the box. As a music guy, I have a few CDs like that. I rip them with Exact Audio Copy and there’s a few that just don’t work, and never did. The discs are in perfect shape and play fine on their own but won’t rip properly no matter what, straight out of the packaging.
Hey Adam,
I’ve had my Wii U soft-modded since 2017 and I’d like you to know a few things.
Ikram232 I’m doing the same. You can play online safely just fine 99.99.99 firmware

@starblazers1969 I got mine used so I saved money cause on Amazon it's expensive for some would like to get Wii with GameCube backwards compatibility
The Wii U was just a low value system. Not many high value games to justify spending 250 bucks. I spent 90 on mine and still feel kind of ripped off.
@@ico128 Exactly
Considering buying a Wii U, I love the GUI, and the e-Shop. It's like a non portable 3DS, but with more features. Plus it'll add to all the Nintendo consoles my family has gathered. (6, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Switch)
Good point on your video, I'm doing the same thing with my game collection, although I have much smaller collection but it would be nice to have all my games within the console
It would definitely be awesome to see a video about ripping games from disk! Also do you have a pdf of EU&JP games you have! Yakuza on my Wii U would be step up
What monitor are you using
Not a PDF, but I posted it below when other people asked.
In general no, but I found at least one game on this console to suffer from it.
Eek, I'm not sure that's possible.
I would like to see a video talking about how you rip all of the disc-based games to your computer.
you really dont need a youtube video for this. just head over to gbatemp.com (or wiidatabase.de), go to the wiiu section and download disc2app
I'm here to second that suggest. Recently tried with Wii games but I don't think it works or least suggestions.
I do read them, yes. Sorry about your dad.
awesome video
Very useful mods. My extent of Wii U modding was using linux on it. On the topic of the console being harder to find, here in Toronto Wii U's prices were like $70-$100 at Pawns. That was only a year ago.
YES to the video about ripping disc based games
Big papa style beast of a console. Great for emulators to. Hope you are doing ok in the circumstances mate. Big papa style in the house
Excellent video Adam just curious is there a way to use a switch pro controller on the Wii U ? enjoying your back catalogue how are you enjoying your Xbox one X, sad it never saw it's full potential.
Not that I'm aware of.
It's by Auzai, I showed it in a recent episode of PlayLoad near the end: czcams.com/video/OVjCz75X_BE/video.html
Edit: I forgot to mention, but i have big hands and brought shoulders and the game pad is surprisingly comfortable.
playing double dash with my friend on my modded wii u is one of my favorite gaming memories
The upgraded battery was also available in the US Online Nintendo Store.. that's how I got mine including the official rechargeable Wiimote batteries
Not sure if you're aware Adam, but you can play online on a hacked Wii U. You just need to change the DNS and online play works no problems. Nintendo sees all installed games as genuine and there is no risk of a ban either FYI.
I would love to see a video on backing up game discs. I've been very paranoia myself lately about that.
@Adam Koralik I'd be interested in seeing videos on how you backed up your collection of discs, especially for the Dreamcast. Thanks!
I loved this video!
I could listen to you talk about one of my favorite consoles all day long!!!
Thanks!
I found a Japanese copy of Devils Third at Gamestop, pointed it out, and they gave it to me, knowing that they couldn't sell it.
You know a game was poor selling when the people at the store just give it to you for noticing it.
teh_supar_hackr 0010101 You do realize the Wii U is region locked, and they literally could not sell the game.
Disc ripping would be an interesting topic
Yeah, I am interested in doing this with my library.
I've been playing online for years with a homebrew Wii u they stopped caring a long time ago.
Yes please make the video on backing up retro games thank you
I was actually wondering about hacking my wii u recently. Thanks for the info
Bad habit, I know)
Yes, but you have to do it by other means.
Just picked up a Wii U today!
I got so damn lucky. I bought the Wii U when it was new but always wanted a second one. Last year I bought a Zelda edition Wii U with the Gamepad plus a pro controller all flawless, with all cables for FIFTY BUCKS!!! So lucky.
20:39 "WUP" sounds like an even shorter version of "wassup"/"what's up?"
*_WUP,_** Adam??* :P
The Wii U will become highly collectible over time... Now is the time to complete a physical game set
They didn't lose much CeX is a very scummy company
Maybe I didn’t listen through all the way and you addressed this but my Wii U has no problem playing the UAE version of Xenoblade chronicles X did they finally change the region locking because I was under the impression that there was no region locking
Love my modded WiiU got one alittle over a year ago and use a 500 GB HD. Pretty much gave me all the games I wanted which at first was Breathe of the Wild. About 3 months ago I finally beat BOTW and now look to conquer other WiiU titles I have on that HD....
Hacked WiiU is amazing, look into "injectors" they allow you to add VC and emulated games with their icons and all and even Game Cube games!
