Ford Mondeo Mk5 Active Grille Shutter. The active grille shutter mechanism on a mk5 ford mondeo, designed to aid engine warm up, performance and fuel economy.
@@easyka correction actually it does. have you seen yours open and shut. It does it on start up looks cool i think it opens/closes just to do a test of operation.
don't suppose you know part number for the grill on the MK4.5/2013 do you, can't seem to find it anywhere .... just want to know how much it's going to set me back !
Hi Alan I have a focus mk4 with an active grill shutter. After an accident i replaced the grill with a new one. And my problem is that my fan is running constantly. Is it because wrong mounting of the grill and the other related components? Because in the video you say of the grill doesn't work then the fan runs in high speed constantly. This saturday i will tell my repairman about your excellent video. Can you please confirm this? Thank you in advance
thanks for this now i know what to look forward to ouside temp sensor suspect as overheated on motorway took a look through grill yup shutters closed, reached through where possible and dragged some out, unfortunately dragged out the important one so need outside temp sensor plus motor and some slats... happy days :? MK5
Hi I took my bumper off complete to change the grills on the Mondeo Mk5 ! On joining it back together the fan is on constantly ! Tried switching it on and off but still the same ! Any idea what I’ve done wrong ?
hi, first off, check that the slat connected to the motor has the splined end connected to the motor...if all the slats are fitted correctly they should be in the closed position...next check the main wiring plug connector is connected to the vehicle wiring loom on passenger side of bumper...and check the wiring is connected to the grille shutter motor and temperature sensor on the drivers side of the grille shutter mechanism...if all is connected then check the wires at all block connectors you have separated as it is quite common for the wires to break especially on the grille shutter motor connector and temp sensor connector
Could this be the reason why the fans on my 61 Galaxy kick in when temp gets to half way and then keep going constantly. The ECU had taken a knock and been repaired badley before I got it and has been 'fixed' to an extent recently. It's the 1.6 Petrol.
I own a Volvo V40 MY14 and I have just the same thing in front of my radiator. I live in Greece and I have noticed that other Volvo V40 MY14 cars in Greece don't have it, especially the Cross country edition. Would I be wrong removing it, as If it is not working properly, It would overheat and burn the engine?
Great videos, very informative, is it possible to bypass this system, cutting out the shutter and the module that connects to them .. mine are completely fit for the tip. and don't want all the expense
I loosened mine off and re tightened it got it down too just a bit wet in the area rather than a actual constant drip. Did some radweld and it's stopped leaking. 1.8 tdci. Seems to be a very common fault
Hi Alan, got 665 plate Galaxy mk4, the fans are staying on from start up,and the active shutters are staying closed, put my snap on scanner on it and it's saying "lost communication with shutter control module A ",would I be correct it's either the motor,or the loom on the bumper ?cheers 👍
Hats off to Ford for a really stupid idea Got a similar thing on my old t4 that's controlled by a waxstat My t4 it's 19 years old and has done 172000 miles and the system works perfectly
Having problem with a 2011 c max not getting DPF up to temp during regeneration on road. Does anyone know if these shutters are supposed to close during regeneration? (I know about vaporizer prob & have ensured its working)
@@alan4x After about 15 mile trip engine malfunction displays in message display. Check codes in ecm & get P244c . Noticed fans run randomly when I wouldn't think they are needed (ie temp gauge below halfway). Changed thermostat And this improved engine temp up to 75-80 from constant 60 degrees. I have also heated dpf temp probes to ensure they read correctly (with a MAP gas torch & reading live data). Arh I'm getting desperate to resolve this now. Just wondered if engine temp being hotter may improve heat all the way down the line to DPF? By the way thank you for your videos.
there should be 2 rubber hoses running from your dpf to an electrical unit on your bulkhead ...check the hoses are not burnt at the dpf end. the dpf will only get to the correct temperature if the diesel is squirted through the vaporiser nozzle into the dpf..so if you have not done so yet you will need to remove the vaporiser nozzle from the exhaust and check it is not blocked...if it is you must replace it
Cheers for your help. I think I may substitute this dpf pressure sensor for a known good unit as I have had problems with these on VW cars before (even though they test as good!) Thanks
I would have just made some new wiring loom so I could fool the ECU you don't need that stupid mechanism all the previous vehicles didn't have this stupid mechanism so why put it on this one somebody somewhere has probably made a wiring loom that just Mike's the fan function as normal like the previous cars
hi, i know exactly what you mean. most of the time i will leave all the slats out and i wont bother rebuilding them but in this case, the slat from the motor was broken and the housing was in a bad way. if the unit is removed from the car or the motor that operates the slats not connected the cooling fans will run flat out all the time while the car is running, so unless there is a way of keeping the fans from running i need the housing to have at the very least the one slat from the motor working, but built this one together properly for the video, in any other case i would not build it, just bodge it lol, thank for your comment.
Best bit was "dont twat ya car in the first place" , that even made my mrs chuckle !! , Excellent vid Allan , See Yaaa
Your timing is impeccable. I pulled the active grille shutter off my mk4.5 only a few hours ago as it has a broken centre support. Cheers for the info

I got the same problem. Today I'm gonna take the meccanism out to see if the motor has any damage. Might as well be the main flap. That right @alan?
Shutter grille and alternator are on the same LIN. If the grille is not working, charging stops too...
Penalozaur have you more information on the 'charging stops too' comment ?

I had forgot to clip the motor plug back on !!

I ripped mine out of my mk4 mondeo to make room for a huge intercooler never had issues

Mk4 1.8 doesn't have it thank god. Does have a god awful thermostat housing to make up for it however. Great video as always.

Hi Alan, do you know what the OEM part numbers are for the grill and motor?, I need to replace the whole thing.
Is this Mk5 the same aa fusion 100%? All parts every thing?
no they are very different in styling and just about everything on them
Hi Alan does the ford galaxy 2016 and the mondeo mk5 have the same active shutter grill?
Thanks mate

I've never look to see if my 2016 M5 has this fitted.

Hallo Alan.
Kann man den Fehler auslesen, wenn die active grill shutter kaputt gegangen sind?
if the active grille shutter motor is affected by broken flaps and not functioning correctly then chances are a fault code will be stored in the ecu

Tell me where the wires from the active grid go
to a multi connector on passenger side of bumper then on to the engine ecu
@@alan4x thanks
Isn’t that what the thermostat is for?
No,when it's really cold the thermostat stays closed because your water doesn't get hot enough with the change that the engine stays too cold.
Ahhh Planned Obsolescence

Why bother putting it back on if the car is based in U.K. or Ireland, it doesn’t get cold enough to make a difference to a modern engine.

I had the same thought but the above comment ^ I had no idea it would keep the fans running sounds a bloody annoyance all this extra things on cars
Wtf is that for a design??? Does any other brand use it?
Where those plastic things expensive ?
