    When I was a taxi driver, licensed by The New Forest District Council, in Hampshire, I used to pick up and drop off passengers at all the London airports frequently. As long as it is pre-booked, you can pick up anywhere in the country. A memorable one for me was a fare from Heathrow to Aberdeen! Booked and paid for in advance. What you CAN'T do is "ply for hire" outside your licensed area.

    The red van most probably has the registration plate mounted high up because it can then legally tow a small trailer and the registration plate remains visible if the trailer doesn’t have one

    • @madbadger1327

      But isn't the point that there is a space for the number plate built into the left hand door, complete with lights to illuminate the plate? There it would still be visible even when towing something.

    • @johnnodge4327
      @johnnodge4327 Před 5 měsíci

      Some company's will mount the numberplate high up to prevent them from being stolen.
      The actual plate location on the vehicle isn't set in stone, as long as it can be read clearly from behind, and a light to illuminate the plate at night, which this van has.

      @catfrab Před 5 měsíci +2

      Yep, you should be made to take a UK professional driving test to drive professionally in the UK.
      All passenger vehicle drivers (private hire, taxis, minibuses etc) should also be made to re-take a pro test on a regular basis, perhaps every 5-10 years.
      This test should include communication skills including spoken English.
      Same with delivery scooters. How we allow learner drivers to work doing deliveries without ever having taken a driving test baffles me! Surely, insurance companies shouldn't be covering them to work as pro drivers without passing a driving test? It should be illegal.
      And council traffic wardens on learner plates issuing tickets and fines to qualified drivers?
      It's all a bit insane.

    The number plate at the top is most likely due to towing and having the van registration plate visible.

    Unfortunately the current phone laws are not working, it needs to be changed to an instant 3 month ban and if you are caught again the penalty is doubled along with the fine

    Presumably the taxi from Wolverhampton drove someone from Wolverhampton to Heathrow. I’ve travelled to Heathrow in taxis registered in Surrey, despite Heathrow being in Middlesex. They don’t make you change taxi at the border! 😂
    He was a sh*t driver though…

    I wouldn't trust these "professional driver" Muppets with groceries, let alone people.
    13:19 Looks like the number plate is put above the doors intentionally. Perhaps, so it can be seen when stopped with the doors open.
    It would be interesting to see if the front number plate is mounted as high. It could be a theft deterrent.

    [cough] I used to be a PH licenced by Malvern Hills; I was at Heathrow airport all the time, also Gatwick; dropping off and picking up people who live in the Malvern area; as that (and school runs), was my primary focus, in a large 8-seater.

    As a private hire, you aren't allowed to operate outside your licensing area? Interesting...what happens if you pick up someone in your license area and they want to go way outside that area...is there a country-wide license for that? So glad I used the tube to get from and to Heathrow!!

    Shocking lack of lane discipline. Must be so easy to get a "professional driver" certification: no test just fill in the form & pay a fee. I bet there is no checks for driving offences just a disclaimer on the form that says if you don't tell the truth then it will be revoked. Likewise will they lose it if they are caught speeding?
