  • Climbing El Cap using only our hands and feet! Bron and I made our second trip to Yosemite in spring 2015. We teamed up with Chris Bevins and spent 6 days and 5 nights climbing Freerider. Both Chris and I free climbed every pitch, Bronwyn managed all but a few pitches.

      The Salathe headwall pitches are so grim for free climbing that even Alex Honnold went around them.

    • @MindsetMastery75
      @MindsetMastery75 Před 5 lety +1

      @@AstralHiGH That is a completely different story. Dan Osman's rope didn't snap from climbing a rock face. Osman's rope snapped, first of all because he was doing a form of bungee jumping off of high cliff's with a certain kind of rope. And the time his rope snapped was because he had already done the jump once with the gear and successfully completed his jump. Then he decided to go back months later to retrieve the rest of his gear, and that same rope was still rigged but was outside and laid bare to mother nature for all of those months and very weak because of this. Dan Osman decided against advice from his friends to go ahead and trust the same rope that has been out in the rain and snow for months and jump again with it. Well, needless to say, he died that day from that poor choice. He knew deep down that rope might not hold and that it could be compromised by the weather over time. But was stubborn and paid for it with his life. He had a young daughter when he passed who is alive today and keeps her dads name alive. She is an avid outdoors person herself, just like her dad!

    • @gallanonim6535
      @gallanonim6535 Před 7 lety +4

      I have props for the team but free climbing 12c/d shouldn't be considered a colossal achievement.Free climbing the Dawn Wall was one, or onsighting 14d, or flashing a V14. These are clossal achievements.

    • @morgann1862
      @morgann1862 Před 7 lety +75

      Gall Anonim, I'm not sure what you're climbing level is. But most people who starts climbing will never climb 12c/d, let alone to apply it to a big wall. Climbing at that level is considered elite. But if you want to diminish the accomplishment by comparing it to the accomplishments of the top 5 climbers of the world, well you go right ahead.

    • @gallanonim6535
      @gallanonim6535 Před 7 lety

      Well, I need to start to consider myself as an elite climber. My max RP is 7c(french scale, which roughly translates to 12c/d) and I'm 6'5" and weigh around 200 pounds. My cousin climbs 14c and certainly does not consider himself as 'elite'. There is still room to grow. I know what I'm talking about. I don't say it's nothing(would like to try Freerider one day, but I give a big F to the US gov. and their visa policy), but definitely not a "a colossal achievement". Maybe if they did it OS with no falls(Pete Whittaker was close, but no cigar).

    • @morgann1862
      @morgann1862 Před 7 lety +10

      Ok respect, I'm more of a 12a/b climber myself. But I give major props to anyone free climbing the free rider, it's a proud line. Once Trump is gone hopefully you can give it a go one day. As for your cousin, most surveys show that less than 2% of climbers can climb 5.14, so being in the top 98.5% of all climbers sounds elite to me.

      There's an alternative approach to this same problem called the "karate kick" where he kicks his left leg onto the wall on the left, and uses friction to support himself (basically what the black-shirt guy does around 3:20).
      An important part of the film "Free Solo" was whether to do the jump or karate kick, but I don't want to spoil the movie for you. Just gotta watch it yourself.
