This is especially true if you can hear your bathtub making noises when you walk around in it. If you notice staining on your ceiling downstairs or already now that your bathtub leaking downstairs then you know it is time to repair your bathtub drain.
This repair I do no my bathtub drain about once every two years. It only takes about 15 minutes and is cheap to do.

Not trying to be a know it all, you seem to be doing very well on your own. But a quick word of advice (and hopefully it helps other viewers). When applying teflon tape, hold the fitting in your left hand (with the threads facing to the right) and go clock wise with the tape (away from you). When you are tightening the fitting, the tape works in the direction you're tightening. Makes a much better seal. Keep going strong DIY gang!
Thanks for the tips! I will definitely pay attention to that the next time I do this!
Im in a single story (1 floor) house living in Houston, Texas, and had a bath tub leak when the shower was on. Water drained through the sheet rock, went through the trim, soaking up the bedroom carpet. I have not called the plumber yet. Can someone please DIY advise so I can save $$$$.
And use gloves
hahahaha i was going to say the same thing. After taping and doping thousands of fire sprinkler heads, it becomes second nature.
"away from you" going over the top? As in clockwise from looking at the bottom of the fitting?
ive been a plumber for 25 years, this is a great video but heres a couple things:
1)try to apply teflon tape orientation so the flap cannot unravel itself, apply it going away from you in a clockwise direction.
2)try to apply a small amount of pipe dope on drain shoes gasket (both sides) it makes a little bit of a better deal
3)plumbers putty doesn’t need to dry, test immediately and you can shower 5 minutes after
Thanks for the tips!
That's a fact, I used plumbers putty on a kitchen sink drain and was washing dishes 30 min later...
Just fixed my bathtub for $20.72 !!!!! Bought everything at a plumber's supplier CHEAP. I was in and out of the tub in 5 minutes, quicker than an actual shower!!! Thxx for posting. My wife is loving me right now!😁
Awesome! Glad to hear it!
Looked at 3 different videos, this was the best and most complete. The other 2 didn't even mention the washer between the tub and the drain pipe. I don't think anyone ever did this to tub in probably 15 years. The washer was all dried, cracking and falling apart. I bought the tool, putty and the washer for less than $20 and probably spent 20+ minutes for the whole job. My plumber charges $90 to walk in the door. Great video, keep it up JMG.
So happy to hear it! Thanks for sharing and glad you were able to save some bucks :-)
Plumbers putty definitely does NOT need to "dry" or set, in fact it should stay soft and pliable for many years. No need to wait 24 hours before using the tub, you can use it right away. It's highly repellant of water. As always, follow the instructions on the container.
Thanks for the tips!

We used the shower right after and had no issues other than I needed to tighten it down more. Thanks for noting that because I was pretty sure, but not certain.
@@ahmedsi Exactly my same world. What was it? Did you ever find out, or did you just replace the tub, and everything else with it? Thanks!
This is an absolutely amazing video. I had a leak in a second floor tub drain which presented itself as a drip coming from a first floor ceiling light fixture. Thinking that it would require access from below the tub, I was expecting it to involve cutting out part of the first floor ceiling. Thankfully, I decided to see if any self help videos were available on the repair process and this was the first one I looked at. You presented it very clearly and made it look much easier than I had dared to imagine it could be. I decided to do it myself and had it completed in less than an hour at no cost. ( I already have plumbers putty and my neighbor has a tub drain wrench.)
Thank You for taking the time to produce this video. Tonight I shall enjoy an ice cold beverage in your honor.
Awesome! Happy it helped. Thanks for your kind message and hope you enjoyed your ice cold beverage 😁
Ditto!!!! Thank you so much
I had a leak in a second floor tub drain just like you. Did this fixed the leak on top of your first floor ceiling light fixture.
I’m going to attempt this job and hope I can say the same!
Same here!

Thanks! Perfect video, short and simple and to the point. You helped me from calling a plumber. Had a leaky drain that was getting my unfinished basement wet, 10 mins later no more leak!
Great job! Happy to hear it!
Great Job! That does look simple enough, very helpful!!
Thank you!
Great information. This helped me figure out why my ceiling was showing a slight stain. Easy to follow and informative !
Glad I could help! 😀
We filled up big bowls today from the cascade in the kitchen. The water was bypassing the U bend and coming around the sides.
This was a life saver. I was able to get the supplies for under 30$ and fix the leak in less than 15 minutes. Thank you!
Woohoo! Good job! Have a great weekend!
This is the best video I've seen. You make it look easy enough that I am willing to try and do it myself. Thanks.
You can do it! Glad I could help :-)
Thank you so much. I kept hearing a leak in the basement and checked every pipe I could find, finally figured out it was the tub. Your video helped me fix this issue myself :D
Happy to hear it Emily! Thanks for letting me know :-)
You may have just saved us hundreds of dollars. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Glad I could help!
Great video! Thank you so much! Very helpful! Going to repair two leaky drains today!
Glad I could help!
Got two of these leaky drains repaired yesterday. Thank you!
Thank you sooooo much! I have successfully replaced my drain using your tutorial.

Just watched the video.. then walked into the garage and got the putty, teflon tape and Channellocks and took it apart. Worked perfectly. Thank you!
Excellent! Thanks for letting me know!
Nice video. Simple, and direct. No over explaining.
Glad I could help!
This worked for me. Thank you and blessings to you and your family
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for the great video! I used it as a guide to change my own bathtub drain.
Glad it helped!
It works! Thank you so much for making this video. I made it much more complicated, in my head. than it really is. I highly recommend the tub drain remover wrench over the channel lock. It made this project so much easier. This project cost me under $25 to complete. I appreciate your videos!
Happy I could help and glad it worked for you! Good job!
Thank you so much for this! My sister had a major drain leak that I sourced back to the tub seal. She lives on a ranch an hour away from the nearest sign of civilization and getting a plumber out there is near impossible! This was very clear and easy to follow along with while fixing her tub!
So very happy to hear it! Yay!!!
Thanks so much for this video! We had a phantom leak for two years and we finally figured it out that was only when someone took a bath, not a shower. You. made it really easy. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
I am having the same problem. Only leaks during bath.
This was very helpful. I found out I had a leak because I had the rubber gasket wrongly positioned.
Glad you were able to locate the issue!
Thank you - just what I needed to repair my bathtub drain.
Happy to help!
Thank you, great video. The pipe for the drain did not easily allow for the insertion of the gasket, but I was able to use a small tap hammer (with help from my son) to push down on the pipe to fit in the gasket.
Glad it helped! Happy to hear you were able to get it fixed!
Okay you have convinced me to try this myself. Wish me luck!
Best of luck Katie! Let me know how it goes!
All my thanks for this video. It helped me get the repair done!
Great to hear!
Thanks! Hope this will solve my mystery leak!
Good luck! Hope so too!
You are awesome my friend.. I haven’t tried this yet. But found this video when I was looking for a solution to my problem. I’m half recovered seeing this video. Got get the stuff for repair and will fix . Love and respect man.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 do more videos pls

Excellent instructional video man, now l know how to fix my leak. 👍👍👍
Great to hear!
Thanks for the video. Looks like an easy fix.
Happy to help in any way I can :-)
You saved me a lot of aggravation! I had a plumber come to diagnose the leak stain in my garage ceiling. He quickly located the leak from the tub but would not fix it. He said his companay did not deal with bathtubs and referred me to a renovation specialist. What a crock! Your instructions were very clear and the repair went very easily. I was worried about removing the drain with 34 year old plumbers putty but it came out no problem.
So happy to hear it Karl! Congrats on a job well done and thanks for letting me know :-)
Wonderful video! Saved my shower.
So glad!
Fantastic and helpful video. Thank you.
You're very welcome! Happy to help.
Commonsense, clear, concise, credible.
Thanks! Happy to help!
I'm soooo greatfull for you sir thank you a trillion times! I cleaned my tub an put a new drain in and boom 3 months later all of a sudden a slight drip from my kitchen light. I cried so bad cause all that it could cost ripping up my walls an floors!! My rubber seal was showing way too much an the inside putty was garbage an the tub seal was rusted🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾❤️❤️❤️ you have saved me some anguish and money I have everything and smh when I installed the new drain I did t use Teflon tape so that's my fault
Good for you for fixing it! Glad I could help!!!!
Excellent video. Thank you for uploading.
Glad you enjoyed it
VERY HELPFUL INFO, THANKS😄😄
Glad it was helpful!
cannot believe, I just did it!!! Now the real test waiting to see if it leaks tomorrow. My tub is in a mobil home and the gasket seems to be between the tub and floor, hope this works...Thanks so much.
Happy it helped! Thanks for letting me know! Enjoy your week!
Thanks man this worked! Went three years not using the damn shower in this bathroom.
Awesome! Glad it helped 😀
Thank you !you helped me save some money and also learned a great diy.
Awesome! So happy I could help!
Awesome information and tutorial! Thank you for doing this. I will be doing this, this weekend for our fiberglass tub.
Thanks again! Keep up the good and helpful videos! Cheers!
Good luck! Let me know how it turns out! 😌
I will do mine tomorrow. I didn't know how to remove the plug grill bit. I hope it works like the US one does. Someone told me to unscrew it from underneath but it would appear from this that one doesn't have to as it can be done from the top.
Awesome video... Helped me fix my own shower drain.
You bet buddy!
Thanks for sharing your techniques
Anytime! Happy to help.
Excellent video, well done thanks! Although tightly-pulled teflon tape seldom gets caught on the thread grooves, it's always best to apply the tape the way several plumbers noted in their comments on this video: Hold in the left hand, and wrap away from you, as in"righty tighty". Overlap slightly, as you work from midway down to bottom of the threads. The most important step is to pull tight the tape, which you did, and that explains why it works even when you wrap tape in the "wrong" direction. Awesome presentation!
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for the tips! I will keep that in mind moving forward 😄
I appreciate this video so much! I needed a video which showed me exactly where the sealant goes on the drain assembly and this fit the bill. I hope I do it well! (Also love your tshirt!)
Glad it helped! And thanks for the compliment on my shirt :-)
I am glad I watched this video. I thought it was just a matter of putting some caulk around the drain. I will call my plumber to do this for me. It is not something I would want to mess up. Thanks.
You can do it! It is actually quite easy. But if you prefer to have a plumber do it, I understand. Best of luck!
Hey, thanks a lot, I really appreciate this video. I just made it home, and my downstairs neighbor was like, "Water is leaking for my ceiling." I checked it out, and it was coming from my tub also. I don't have the cash for a plumber so looked it on and your video popped up, watched it and I am done, in less then ten minutes. Thank you again.
Fantastic! Glad to hear it helped :-)
Very informative and helpful 👍
Happy to help! 😀
Great explanation and images. Many thanks.
You are welcome!
Very helpful and exactly what I needed to do. Thank you!
You're welcome! 😁
Hey man I appreciate this. Just bought my first home and first week in I'm having the issue u just described. Or at least I m hoping. Now I'm praying I don't f something else up while tending to drain. 🙏
Congrats on your new home!
Tell me about it. I bought my first home 2 yrs ago and had 4 plumbing related leaks!
Great video and great comment advice from Colin.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Thank you so much Sr.
You are most welcome!
Great video. Definitely helped answer a couple of questions I had.
Just wanted to note that you can use a screw driver in between your pliers handles to get some more leverage if you don’t want to buy the tool. Personally I’m glad I bought it, because I still had a leak after fixing the seal. A little extra tightness stopped my leak.
Glad I could help and thanks for the tip with the screwdriver.
Thanks. This is really helpful.
Happy it was helpful!
THANK YOU! This video saved me time and $$$. My home had a mystery leak, where it turned out that a tub drain was leaking, and all the water was welling up into a light fixture. It was very weird to replace the light by first dumping out water! Anyway, thanks, your clear instructions were spot on.
Great! Happy my video Helped! That does sound like it was a mystery. Glad you got it resolved 🙂
Dude I had this same problem! Did you fix it?
Wow o have the exact same thing through a light fixture! Surely this is the problem!!!. Will fix tomorrow
Just want to comment here and say thank you so much for this video. You showed everything clearly with great footage, explained it very well, and gave me the confidence to fix this myself. Our drain was leaking in the exact spot you showed here and the repair was just as simple as you made it look. Our leaky tub fix cost about $30 in repairs and 30 minutes worth of time thanks to your video. No telling what a plumber would've charged me. Thanks again!
Great to hear it! Happy my video was able to help you get it fixed for only $30 and in only 30 minutes. Good for you! Thanks for letting 😄me know!

Saved 150$ on a plumber.. Thank you 👍🇺🇲
Woohoo! Happy to hear it!
JMG: Thank You You gave me an idea: If my tub is leaking from the inside, then the linkage assembly would not be my problem... it makes sense.. I'll try the inside drain first, right after I watch your great video... Thank you for your time. 💯
Best of luck! Let me know how it goes!
Great video sir. I have not resealed my tub in 19 years and don't have an issue BUT. My son had a tub leaking at 8 years so I will be resealing mine this weekend. Preventitive measures always trump disaster clean ups. I also subscribed 🙂
Glad I could help and best of luck this weekend. Let me know how it goes! :-) and welcome to the channel!!!
Awesome Video! Helped so much. I did not get the putty coming out of the sides. Although it is a bit wider of a drain flange then yours, I am worried maybe i did not put enough on but I don't want to remove it all. I guess just wait and test.
Happy to hear you did it yourself! Yes, I agree, just wait and see how it goes. :-)
Great video. Thank you for sharing!
You bet! 😁
Very helpful. Thank you.
You bet! Glad I could help
Thank you, I had a leak and had no idea what to do, Your video saved me from calling a plumber.
Great to hear it! Thanks for letting me know. Happy I was able to save you some money.
Very helpful video. Thank you
You're welcome!
Thanks man very helpful. Previous plumber didn’t believe is centered gaskets or Teflon tape I guess.
Glad it helped! Yeah its weird, different plumbers do different things. I would think doubling the seals would always be advised.
Thanks so much for this video. Very helpful
Happy I could help!
Dude thank you... you saved me lots of money
No problem 👍
You just saved me 3 grand thanks!!
So happy to hear it Tyler!
Very good.

Good to know about the two screw drivers. Thanks!
Awesome video!!!! Thank you so much

Great video. It’s one of those things you know you have to do but procrastinate on because you don’t know what to do.
Thanks! Glad I was able to help 😌
@@JMGENTERPRISES Thank you so much for a great video I just got one question I repaired the drain about a month ago thanks to your video and it’s leaking again from the same area what do would you different on how to go about fixing things again ? Thank you so much in advance for your great help
@@arkangel2351 - Sorry to hear it's leaking again. If I were you, I would probably try using silicone instead of plumbers putty this time around. Silicone usually seals the best.
@@JMGENTERPRISES Ok I’ll try that next I’ll keep you posted. Thank you for all the help
Great video, thanks 😊
You bet! 😊
I think this is my problem. The tub was put in by a licensed contractor, and he used a licensed plumber. But it has been five years since installation. Now we have a house full of family, and we have a leak on the ceiling when someone uses the shower or water is let out of the tub. I'm going to get a wrench and reseal my drain tomorrow. You have been a life saver!
Best of luck! Hope it solves the problem. Let me know how it goes!
Did it solve the problem?
Great job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome video, thank you.
