    It's interesting to see how in almost every country featured that the official language is the base on which the creole is spoken, yet the majority population are fluent in the creole and not the actual "official language".

    • @CharisMaggieTV
      @CharisMaggieTV  Před 2 lety +4

      What’s crazier is that the creole language is what most ppl are fluent in speaking but some don’t know how to really read or write it as it wasn’t taught to them in school in the same way French or English was but instead they learnt it through interaction. Hopefully this changes soon

      @@CharisMaggieTV and it’s underrated the value of your channel. As the guest mentioned that I wasn’t exposed to other creoles neither did I consider googling until I saw this channel. I was unaware of the creole of the eastern Africa’s and Cape Verde.
      As well he is correct about our roots being passed through Cape Verde based on other researching in my down time. Finally, I’ve discovered Spanish words in the Saint Lucian creole same as I’ve seen Yoruba, Shona and other contributions although not as much as French. Great channel and work.

    I love how he described the Cape Verdean language as being ‘Portuguese vocabulary’ and ‘African grammar.’ That’s exactly why I can understand my friends when they speak in Portuguese but they cannot understand when I’m speaking CV creole. Thank you for this amazing interview. I will be getting the book!

  • @capeverdemeucoracaominhavi1678

    In Cabo Verde they taught Portuguese in the schools but the people who were taken from Africa spoke Criolo at home. Its a combination of African language mixed with Portuguese, just like creoles in other parts of the world. Haitan creole is African language mixed with French and I think Louisiana creoles are also African language mixed with French. But the key point is what part of Africa were the people taken from, what tribe ?
    They mixed their own native language with the language of the colonizing countries.
    There are a lot of Cape Verdean people in US. The Diaspora. Some try to say we are not Cape Verdeans because we have lived in US for a while, but that is where our families came from.
