- Today I'm featuring the Dawson Precision Tool-less Guid Rod for the Springfield Armory TRP Operator Tactical Full & 3/4 Rail gun.
After doing some research into a different guide rod system, than the one that comes from the factory (pin, wire, hacked hex wrench, paper clip, required for disassembly) I emailed Dawson Precision about their product. It took them about 4 days to get it to me and all I can say is that it works as described.
This is a great product that makes the assembly/disassembly process of a weapon with the full length guide rod easy.
The setup that comes on a TRP Operator (railed) gun is a bull barrel with a full guide rod and a reverse plug (complete oposite of a GI 2 piece system). In order to transition to that system you will have to have a regular barrel fitted with a barrel bushing. That would be much more expensive than the $80 you pay for the Dawson system.

Just picked up a TRP Operator. The guy at the gun store sold me on this because he has one. It's nice to know someone is willing to help prevent headaches! Second Amendment Sports in McHenry, IL. Great store with awesome staff! Thanks for a great video, and thanks to Bryan at Second Amendment Sports!
I've had the Dawson Precision Guide Rod installed in my TRP for years, it's fantastic.
LOL, the simplicity of the Glock (I own 4). I know $75 bucks sounds like a lot but if you own a TRP Operator then it's worth every penny. Thx for watching!
Wow thanks for this video ! I purchased my full rail 1911 operator thinking it would be a pain to clean needing a paper clip all the time ! I’m definitely going to purchase this for sure now ‘ GAME CHANGER !
Thanks for making the video. It was exactly what I needed.
Thank You!!! Bought the Dawson product after watching your review. Much easier.
Since it doesn't come with a recoil spring, you must use your old spring from your old guide rod and install it into the Dawson precision guide rod.
thanks juanito!! I might consider this tool for my full rail trp.
JR, thank a lot for this video. I just ordered one for my TRP. Great Vids, much appreciated.
Juan -
thanks for this video - i bought the guide rod and installed it on my TRP today (which i only got 2 weeks ago) - perfect video and i thanked the guys at DP as well.
BTW for the other TRP owners out there who reload...try 4.0GR of Bullseye with 185 grain SWC, JSWC or JHP with COAL of 1.215"...nothing but x's out of this gun!!! :) :) :)
Thank you so much bought this for my Prodigy. Without your video I would have been lost.
Great gun, I got one of these guide rods in the mail today, I hope to have a short vid of it posted soon.
Thanks for this video man! I'm gonna be buying a few of these guide rods now!
Great video Juan, thanks!
Very cool, excellent explanation.
I got one of these because of his video, hope it works as good as it looks
Nice! I need one of these for my full-rail TRP.
Dingle Fritz not cheap but a must
Very good video I think I'm going to go get one for my TRP. Great video keep em coming. Stay Safe!!
Nice job. Very informative.
I've had 500+ rounds without a hitch and when it's all put together the guide rod doesn't come in contact with any metal as the reverse plug centers everything. I'm glad you like it and hope it works for you as it did for me, jr
I bought one as well and in my opinion if your going to spend the money to buy a top shelf pistol like the TRP Operator this is a MUST. You wouldn’t buy a Ferrari with a 4 cylinder don’t pass on this Dawson.
Excellent! Sadly...on my very first take down, I gave my TRP the damned scratch, but lesson learned. This gun will stay with me for another 25 years or so, so I am not too upset about my stupid mistake. I will be ordering the Dawson rod today!!! Mine is 3/4 rail, so the rod will make life much easier. Thanks! Subscribed!
another idia is fix the barrel lik to s boy scratching your gun when you try to re-assembling
I really like the full length guide rod in this setup!
hi juan I like the TRP 45 whith the tool-less guide rods I need to fix the link just like Ifixit in my other gun
Nice one on the full rail
Really great stuff, great video.
I bought a Dawson Precision Tool-less Guid Rod and it was of the best money I ever spent.
Great video man. I will be ordering the guide rod for my full rail trp operator.
I filed my 3/16 - 1/4 Inch Guide Rod Down where I was COMFORTABLE...SHOOTS GREAT NO KINKS OR ANY ISSUE EVER 1100 and Counting...AND NO MORE PINS OR PAPER CLIPS>>>And Looks Cool...I got 2 Black Holes Staring at Yeah...LOL
🤣🤣
Great Video keep the info coming. Thanks!
Just dropped in a FLGR with a compensator on my G.I. 1911....LOL this is alot trickier than I initially expected. Easy to get on, still have yet to get it off.
full rail trp is so awesome
That was awesome. I'll be buying one now.. you also gained a new subscriber.
@42cujo because of the bull barrel there is no bushing. You would have to fit a regular barrel and bushing, then you could use the GI guide-rod. In the place of the bushing, there's a reverse plug on the inside attached to the guide-rod. It really works flawless with or without the Dawson but the disassembly and reassembly is much easier with it. Hope this helps, jr
Fantastic video. Dawson should pay you royalty for this demo
Nice explanation.👍🏽✌🏾
Great vid man.
Excellent presentation. I wish they had this for the Range Officer Compact, I would have bought one. Still a good video though. Thanks.
Great video. Thanks!
Great video. Going to get one of those for my full- rail TRP. Subscribed to your channel also.
thanks for a very good/informative video!

@Clapacino I have gotten flyers with the 3/4, but I attribute that to the rear sight. It's like the factory sights on Glocks. I didn't realize how bad they made me shoot. Some people love the wide open sight picture but the moment I went with Trijicons and closed the gaps, my shots started to hit POA. Plus the edges on the TRP adjustable's snag on loose clothing. Harrison custom has a rear sight that works great for the TRP Operator. In my opinion, the sights have to go (that's just me)
i love that trp i wish i got when when i first saw it.
Wow does help I see thanks for your helpful advise no scratching allowed :)
@Clapacino 1. Springfield has been making the loaded model with the 2 piece & the TRP with the full length guide rod for a long time. I have all 3 TRP's and I can tell you that they all shoot better than I can or am capable of. The bull-barrel/full length setup is used by all major manufacturers. In this setup the bull-barrel lockup is what provides the accuracy and the Springfield TRP has very tight tolerances. The only reason people complain about the guide rod setup is because of the....
Great video.
yes. they are very nice. theres no need to have to have special tools to dissasemble. the only issue i have is how close i made the tolerances on mine between the compensator/barrel/guide rod plug. its a bit tight and can be a bit finicky
very nice trick monsieur!!!Merci very much!!
Great video. Thanx
Thank you for your reply. I'll get this set up and let you know what i thought about it.
@Clapacino 2. takedown requires either a paper clip with the full length or a hex wrench with the two piece guide rod. I have the the stainless no-rail TRP with the GI setup, regular barrel and bushing setup, and I shoot better with the half rail (the trigger feels heavier on the stainless). The only change I'm making to both my full & half-rail is changing out the rear adjustable sight with the 10-8 combat sight. I did install the Dawson Tool-less just to ditch the stupid paper clip, juanriv01
Holding up perfectly. Have about 350 rounds combined between two different TRP's. Spring tension on the lever feels just as strong as when purchased. Let me know how yours is doing for you. Thx, jr
This is great information for someone wanting this pistol but may not know about the guide rod needing a tool in order to disassemble the pistol, even for a simple field strip... Also very informative for someone that may know about needing the tool, but doesn’t know about an alternative from a trusted place like Dawson, and might be hesitant buying the pistol as needing a special tool just for field stripping may be a deal breaker for some people... thank you for making this vid 👍
@Clapacino Well, you know the TRP, for the money, is an awesome seller for Springfield. They just can't keep them in stock. My LGS placed and order 2 years ago and they just started trickling in October of last year. A banged up used one sells for $950 and Springfield will still stand behind it even to the second owner. I had one issue and in 6 days they had me squared away. Keep it clean, change out your recoil spring at 500 rounds, and you'll be just fine!
Could you please make a video showing removal of the Springfield guiderrod and spring and installing the spring onto the Dawson guiderod. Thanks.
Put one on my prodigy it was over 100$ makes assembly and disassembly quick and easy. Well worth the money. It's a bushing not a plug. Take your slide off your gun remove spring and rod remove barrel you do not have to capture outside of system first
I have 2, STI 2011's. they sent a plastic tool that makes it a little easier to take down the bull barrel on my VIP. now that I have the TRP FULL RAIL, WITH THE BULL BARREL, I think I just might have to spend the extra money. I had no idea that the tool less guide rod worked that easy. dawson used to be a gunsmith for STI, that guy must be a genius. surely he's got the patent on that ! thnx juanriv01
I love it when you say weapon! Weapon weapon weapon please say it one more time !
Weapon
Awesome thank you!
The Operator is a railed gun. I have a stainless also that uses the two piece guide rod, just like yours. Unfortunately this tool-less guide rod only works with a bull-barrel / bushing-less gun. My next move will be to go with the GI configuration and eliminate the need for the hex wrench. My only reason for the GI setup is to ditch the wrench, not because I think one is more accurate than the other. To me, simple is better. Thx for watching!
this is a game changer
Awesome. THANKS!
Thanks!
thanks, appreciate the video
Cool video thanks
@blkdawg Thanks for stopping by!
@Clapacino My experience has been the same as you. But when you start getting those tight groups you become a bit overconfident and your mechanics suffer. You notice that when you catch yourself and readjust, everything comes together again. I'm talking range targets and not steel plates.
I have the springfield 1911 loaded, i just replaced the 2 piece for the full length wilson combat guide rod for only 30 bucks.
I bought a GI guide rod for my TRP Full rail. I got a bull barrel plug.
Your setup works great too. jr
nvm just saw the end of your vid. thank you very much
@juanriv01 Thanks Juan you're the best, I consider myself advanced in the knowledge of firearms but the whole reasoning behind the FLGR vs SGR issue has mystified me. As I myself could't think of anything other than faster disassembly for preferrence of an SGR. Having the FLGR myself in my 1/2 rail Operator I noticed flyer shots in my groups and wasnt sure if the bull barrel or FLGR was the issue, and also considered the sights on the trp as many I know replaced theirs with novack
Yes, it does, jr
I have a full rail TRP with the Dawson guide rod, about 1,500 ish rounds since 1 year ago and worked great, all of a sudden the spring is jammed inside the guide tube (?) and jams up...the guide rod dangling out the front with no tension on it. Cant figure out what is wrong or different ..nothing looks wrong..if I shake it a couple times it snaps free...
Juan, the reason I think your barrel lug got dinged is because you allowed the slide to catapult forward as you released the slide stop. The proper way is to simply ease the slide forward using the same hand to hold the slide & frame. This way, the guide rod/spring assembly gently mates with the plug without the velocity of the slide/barrel assembly going forward.
+walnutrd 1911's are built like tanks and don't require finesse to handle. Whether you sling it or use the slide stop the results should be the same without causing any issues. I've had countless 1911's and never had this issue. Once SA repaired it, it has been flawless, jr
The only issue I am having with the tool less guide rod is when putting it back together to put the slide stop back in. The guide rod pushes against that loop(?) Then the little lever releases in front against the slide and wants to shoot the slide forward before I even have a chance to out the slide stop and in line it up.
I didn't realize the Nighthawk made a reverse plug in a GI setup that would work with the TRP. Can you tell me how much gunsmithing is required to make this work? (I read on the bottom of the product page that gunsmithing was required). Thanks, jr
Correct!
Wow! Nice
Thank God, No more paper clip!!!!!!
Juan, first off, love your video's. I realize this video is three years old but i just purchased a full rail trp and i absolutely love it. I do have an issue that i was hoping you could help me with. The issue i have is the same issue you had with the guide hitting the barrel link legs. I saw your video where you sent it in to springfield and they beveled the back side of the guide rod. after i saw that i imediately field stripped my gun to see if i had the bevel or not. I do not and i noticed that there are some burs forming on the barrel link legs already just from racking the slide. You had your factory guide rod spring worked by SA but what about the dawson guide rod? It appears to me that the dawson guide rod does not have the bevel either? Are you expierencing the dawson guide rod hitting the barrel link legs now? I'm preparing to purchase the dawson product but i'm concerned because i doubt SA with bevel a after market guide rod? i'm at a loss as to what i should do. i hope you have some advice on this. As expensive as this gun was i'm loosing my mind over this.
+joe santiago The fix from SA takes care of the problem and will not interfere with the function of the Dawson GR
I like the fact that you dont have to put the slide stop in under tension. I have an early model with a bushing and the hex key system, would this work on mine?
+Phu Vet Yes it will
Hey Juan thanks, I really like the Springfield TRP Operator and was looking at the full slide version, but did not like the fact that I needed a tool to field strip. I see you have both the full slide and the partial slide do you have a preference and why?
Are there any issues you have found to the full slide(e.g. holsters, nose weight)?
Thanks for the great and informative videos.
+Mark Badia No issues with the full slide, love the weight up front at it brings balance and I had a leather holster made for mine so I can't help with alternatives
This is genius. My TRP was on order and before it even came in, I saw this video and ordered the Dawson Precision Guide Rod. I received it, disassembled my firearm once with a paperclip just to install the Tool-less Guide rod, and I love it! Do you have issues when reinserting the captive guide rod back in when re-assembling by the guide rod rubbing the inside of the slide? I am afraid it will start rubbing away at the coating :/ Love the way the system works though! Still won't change it!
Sure, the gi guide rod works ok. It's been doing ok for over a hundred years
Thanks
Great video. Hope you don't mind me asking but what does the grip handle say on the second TRP?
Thanks! I purchased those grips from Dawson Precision. It’s just some funky logo, Japanese style writing. They are aggressive and looked cool. Gives it that touch
You won't be disappointed! jr
For the full rail, if you're willing to use an allen key or tiny screw driver you can still do it just like the half rail. use the allen key to actuate the lever in the guide rod and boom. same thing. though it's not 100% toolless at that point but I'd rather do that than mash the guide rod out the front with my thumb and still more convenient than the paper clip.
thanks alot dude. Im converting my bushing trp to a compensated bull barrel.
Thanks, jr
Thanks, jr
Thanks, jr
Thanks, jr
Thanks, jr
And marking the snot of the reverse bushing in the process.
@Clapacino I dont like the sights that come with it, they are too "ridged" and protrusive. They are springfield factory target night sights if im correct?...other then that I absolutely LOVE MY Springfield TRP. I'm glad for your affirmation that the FLGR isn't the issue and as I poder further I think my flyer shots are mainly due to the skinny ridged factory sights..what do you think Juan...anyone else you know getting weird flyers with the TRP 2007/08 1/2 rail model?
So how easy is it to replace the recoil spring for maintenance?
I’ve never had issues with taking down my full rail. I actually went with the 10-8 reverse plug so it disassembles like a GI. But am interested in this tool less guide rod just don’t know how easy it is to replace the recoil spring and setting up the guide rod to be put back in.
wow thats awsome but why cant you put the regular gi guide rod and plug not the full length ?
Do you use the original recoil spring or do you have to buy a different one?
Great Job! I did not know there was a rod out there till today, so thank you! do they sell them for Kimber 1911 PRO CARRY 11 WITH LIGHT RAIL?
I second this question! Is there any updates??
Cool. Unfortunately, still not available in our place.
I have the full rail TRP. Is all I need the tool less guide rod? Their website says something about springs.
Jerry Cherry Pie I had no problems with the included spring and tool less guide rod setup. Don’t know of any known issues
juanriv01, I believe Nighthawk Custom has a better answer for those with bull barrelled TRPs. I was going to go the Dawson route, but I have read about them breaking. Nighthawk has a reverse plug that allows you to use a regular GI rod. It is true simplicity; 1 part.
Great video, juanriv01. I have 2 Kimbers, a 4" compact CDP and a 5" Custom, both function flawlessly. I would like to be able to take them down without a tool. Will I have to change the firing pin spring in either/both for this setup? I have 18lb and 22lb spring in them with the appropriate spring for the firing pin from Wolf. Thank you, I'm very curious about this.
How do you like your TRP? I'm thinking of buying one. It is a pricey 1911.
It's pretty much everything I want out of a 1911. Pricey but worth it (to me). There are others out there with same features for less cost like the Remington R1 Enhanced.
Did you use the factory spring with the dawson guide rod?
hoofixrman martin Yes, without issues, jr
