The repair and restoration of a Nakamichi Dragon Cassette Tape Deck. Belts and the idler tire are replaced. Rare Nakamichi 1000P DAC, 1000MB CD changer along with the 1000 Digital Audio Tape(DAT) deck. OH YES PLEASE....... Fourty years a go as a "little kid" if someone had told me I could watch an hour long film about Nakamichi Products I would not have behieved them. Many thanks to you Sir.
My Nakamichi DR3 is 30 years old and is operating perfectly on it’s original belt and pinch roller, even though it was in storage for around 15 years.
I own a nakamichi system one, that I love! I have it with all the boxes, paper work, manuals, brochures, and even a nakamichi cleaning brush! I use it with NS 1000's and the combo sounds very accurate. Can't beat great manufacturing from the late 1970's!

I replaced orange capacitors in mine Dragon and it significantly improved details in the high range. And replacement of electrolyte capacitors is a must in this age.

Nakamichi gear was generally expensive stuff. I always had a teac or akai but I could never afford a Nakamichi anything on my Pizza Hut salary.
I still have 2 Nakamichi car amps...in original boxes...and old Nakamichi car stereo brochures...oh and a Nak Lx3 cassette deck for home.
Nakamichi made excellent cassette decks. Mine is 30 years old is totally original including the belt. Sounds fantastic.
The sound reproduction of Nakamichi dragon was laid-back.
But sonically the undisputed best cassette deck in the world and looks really good too.

My Nak ZX-7 still works great, though I do have to replace the belts and tire every 6-7 years. The rollers seem to last longer. That 'split' transport is something to behold too. You MUST be mindful of every tiny washer under every moving item there. Specs are top-grade - my unit reached 27kHz with TDK metal tape at -20dB, 22kHz at -10dB, and 15kHz at 0dB!

impressive. I wouldn't want to risk an restauration of this expensive deck, though. I am quite happy with my reliable 80s Technics direct drive, which didn't need repairs in the last 35 years.

Pretty much over kill even back when it was new. I had a JVC $200 tape deck that was fantastic. Once you matched the suggested tape type and brand with the deck, it recorded and played back really well. Dolby-B was enough back then. High frequency response was great. I used Maxell and TDK tapes.
lots of great gear was produced back in the day. It was a great time to be into audio equipment.

Great video, I owned a Nakamichi RX 505 tape deck, the sound quality was astounding, not quite Dragon level but head and shoulders above the most other separates von the market then, thanks for the memories!

I have both Dragon and 505. 505 is very close to dragon for way less money. Way less problems too generally.

I had the RX 505, reverse function was a fun gimmick but the sound…..had a little side gig making high quality compilation tapes for bars and clubs..
I have a Nakamichi 581 and Yamaha K-580 vintage tape decks. I serviced them myself watching CZcams videos.
Back in 1998 i used that dat transport and the dac and the Cello audio palet preamp/eq to make great recordings that i still use in demos after all these years.Great equipment from Nakamichi,probably the best they made.

i forget to refer that when the Stasis power amplifier was released with it´s nice pre-amplifier i thought of making a complete system from nakamichi but i started to remenber the bad experience i had in the past with several equipment from this brand .Nak it´s like GOD ,it´s....no one knows but for century´s people pray to him for anything ,nakamichi is a bit better you can have it and being so good and expensive you have to pray to have a wining brand working ,but is there someone in the late 70´s bought a nakamichi system and it still works today without a repair, so many people in the internet, no one?so many dragons for sale ,people sell their equipment because it´s the best or because they want to get rid of something?
I got into the service repair back in the early 90's and i still love working on these 'ole decks and the vintage equipment. I can also say from many, many units i've worked on in my career that the decks were by far the hardest but most rewarding side of the service industry, simply because of their complexity. These days, there's absolutely no comparison to what it was like working on these machines. Since, i can't see such small parts like i used to. I guess i'm what they call old now... hehehe (at 55 years old... youngins' these days have no clue) ;)
Thanks so much for sharing. Modern consumer electronics today for the most part is just thrown out when it breaks. I think that a lot of this 60's and 70's gear will make it 100 years. I guess I won't be here to see, LOL.

Dragon отличный аппарат, но есть несколько моментов, ограничивающих его качества и звук в целом (других дек тоже касается)
- Dolby - звук идет всегда через чипы dolby (всего 8шт!) при записи и при воспроизведении, даже если функция неактивна!
- полупроводниковые ключи в цепи сигнала - действительно пагубно влияют на звук, странно что не установили реле вместо них
- авто азимут - система, которую пришлось применить из-за дискретной головки записи, довольно грубая и недостаточно точная, вручную на частоте 10-16к регулировка заметно точнее.
а вот про DAC и DAT от Nak до этого не знал, спасибо!

it was 1989 when i got station at Yokosuka Japan and first saw the Nakamichi booth at Navy Exchange. Gotta have that Dragon at $2400 a pop. Fast forward. Two years+ into the pandemic, that animal is now 33 years old this year 2022(still in pandemic he he he). Funny i never removed most of its protective laminate on most of the buttons, under the dust is near flawless black body like when it first unboxed. What a piece of technological marvel i brought from my life in the 1980s.

Chris, in the early to mid 70's, a lot of audiophiles were still grooving on their various reel to reel decks. I remember the rise of cassette decks, in the late 70's, and then into the mid 80's...Until CD's became popular.
Yes Don, that's true. Until Nakamichi and others got the cassette technology to the point that cassettes could compete in sound quality open reel was the king. Of course everyone having a cassette deck in their car didn't hurt the surge either.
well, sorry to disagree but saw lors of people mad because the only shop that sold blank tapes in late 90's didn't sold them anymore , i had money but most of the people were not ready to be forced into a diferent format than the cassette tape, and owned two dragons one wgen it came out other in early 90's but they had the same problem cheap parts deformed in regions that the temperature doesn't go beneath 30 degrees clelsius for 5 or 6 monthes a year , and wake up at 8 .00 p.m. with 38 degrees without a.c. its hell and dragon didn't like hot weather , twice i was stupid , maybe be ause in the 70's i had a nakamichi and as older it could look it worked , and spent around or almost a 1000 dollars for it and in the 90's almost 2000 dollars but as good as a nakamichi dragon works when new it doesn't have the quality of a revox reel deck or akai or pioneer from late 70's by far the problem either than electronics is the cheap material they built the azimuth alignement and auto-reverse function and yes the 70's decks till 76 were really good , nothing else and today it seems people are insane i sold my last dragon for 300€ it was beneath my bed not working but even twice burned i ended up buying a CR-7 that only use it in the winter and the monthes around it but the main reason dragons don't last is the fact that people think it can use any cheap cassette and it rurns them to gold but its the reverse only very good tapes , that don't demand extra strenght to make them rotate , the lighter cassettes are in terms of rotation the more years the dragon lives, but with the years i found much better sounding decks as an example all reference casstte decks from pioneer all other nakamichi components are really bad, the stasis amplifiers i spent a fortune buying two monos and a pre-amplifier did amazed me for 12 years when i had to out to work my sansui system from 76 , and minimal maintenance and its working today with a thorens turntable and some focal speakers not the most expensive ones but i also had the dragon turntable that i sold rapidly when i notice it would stop running for a couple of reason , while my 72 pionner turntable is still working great, but its a se ond pioneer system i have in my main living room with a reel deck from akai a 1970 model , wich when recording a compilation from a cd the tape sounds much better , nakamichi from my point if view develops very good material with nice improvements but when in production they cut the costs by using the cheapest materials they can find , isn't it a pitty, has mr. Nice LX-5. I have one that I got free when I bought a Eumig FL-1000 off a guy. I wasn’t quite sure given the high asking price and I had never even heard of Eumig before. He claimed it is the one and only dragon killer. I’ve never used a dragon so I can’t say, but to sweeten the deal he threw in a mint LX-5. I was just listening to some new (used) tapes on it last night!
Thanks! Man, the LX-5 I think is a sleeper in the Nak line. None of them are inexpensive anymore on the used market (unless you get it for free like you did) but if anyone can find a LX-5 you will get a great performer.
Those were impressive machines. Today's digital music files are far superior in audio quality than any cassette tapes, but much of the "magic feeling" from that time when recording or playing a cassette is gone.

Been comparing me marantz 2270 vs My Marantz PM 8006 both 70 watts me subscribers want me to have a video vintage vs new age but my Marantz from 1972 still works great and has been serviced /cleaned threw the years but i Know a full recap would turn the 2270 to another level

that was a great video to watch l love nakamichi but dont own one l do have a tandberg 3014 A and as l text this its being totally overhauled it will take several months to restore l was trying to sell it as is BUT my heart said no way lm the original owner of this fine component it took a very long time to find someone to service this deck it will be ready in the spring l too love vintage gear been at it since the late 70s your videos wants me wanting more gear but space wont allow it l have more than enough

Hopefully you will find your parts. Just keep looking on eBay regularly. You never know when something will pop up.
I enjoy all of your videos, but I really loved this one. Perhaps you, or one of your viewers could help me with an issue I am dealing with. I have a Jeff Rowland model five that had the left channel die. I can see the problem area and fried components and know that the other side is not far behind. So this is my issue... there are no repair manuals or schematics to be found. This is such a beautiful amp and it kills me to see it sitting.
Thanks for watching. That's a real problem when you can't find a service manual or schematic for a piece of equipment. Been there myself. Sorry, I don't have one or know where to find one. There really is no easy solution but you may be able to use your good channel as a helper/guide to try and figure out the issue with the bad channel. Also take a good look about the damaged area. In these older pieces of equipment the electrolytic capacitors are the number 1 failure point but many times when one goes it takes out other components with it.
Had many Nakamichi products since mid 80's.A high powered car audio system in '84 loaded with 8 Nak subwoofers ,am ps , tape deck, cd changers and crossovers started it.Then carried on to Nak home audio.A 730 is what I ended up with. Collectin dust preamp section does not work.Power section is good.I wonder why

Nakamichi products were pretty expensive but they made some great audio equipment.
Looking just at the 1000p, could this DAC be hookup with modern DDC like Singxer SU or Gustard U16? Just wanted to know how this well-engineered TDA1541A DAC performed vs the modern delta-sigma offering
I don't see why not but I'm certainly not an expert. Listening to to the 1000P I think it sounds great but I'm sure the modern DAC's are a step or two above it in sound quality. The 1000P, 1000MB and the 1000 DAT that I own I enjoy just looking at them. They are that stunning.
@@vintageaudioaddict Thank you Sir for your reply. My concern is the sampling freq output from DDC (24/196k) to 1000p’s max 48kHz input. I only listen from Tidal, owns no CD, but curious after reading many good things about its sound, and hoping to hook my U16 to 1000p, if I can lay my hands on it.

If your not going to use your dragon you can sell it for some pretty good money.

What's the name of tape head unit auto correction from Nakamichi Dragon? Head unit no need to be adjusted using screw driver for best sound reproduction...
I have the CR7. I chose to buy the CR7 over the Dragon for a reason, it wasn't the cost either. There wasn't a huge drastic difference in cost when you're that far into the game. I do love quality of Nakamichi!!! Remember, they did use Class A circuitry! You get what you pay for, like they say, if you can't run with the big boys, stay home on the porch!!!

I bough a brand new NAKAMICH ZX-9 in the 80s and now it's not running anymore. It powers up but nothing is moving. I press play, rewind, fast forward, record and nothing happen. I do not know how to fix this deck so I put it back in the box and sitting there for so many years now. I took it to a repair shop and he returned it to me and told me that he cannot fix it because he said that deck is very complicated. I cannot find anybody who knows how to fix my deck. I miss it so much.
Your ZX-9 is a great deck. Over the years almost all tape decks stop operating well for one reason or the other. I hope that you can get her running one day.

the cables even the best technicians world wide said that after testing all sections of cable sold they said that from a section up it´s only throwing money to the garbage and pretty cables normally are never better than cheap rubber isolation ,they were substituted in electric instalations for one reason beautifull cloth protected cables can cost a lot and not being better than the rubber isolated ones that are cheap
Better than TOTL Tandberg, and Eumig FL-1000?
The Nak st-7 is way better than people think. But it is not one of their better-engineered products. I don't mean completely screwed up design, I mean the path the RF signal takes through RCA terminated corroded connectors. They eat the signal like a piranha. Do some creative work there and wow what a gem.
Dragon is an excellent deck, but there are several points that limit its quality and sound in general (it also applies to other decks)
- Dolby - the sound always goes through dolby chips (8 pieces!) During recording and during playback, even if the function is inactive!
- semiconductor switches in the signal circuit - really have a detrimental effect on the sound, it is strange that they did not install a relay instead of them
- auto azimuth - the system, which had to be applied because of the discrete recording head, is rather rough and not accurate enough, manual adjustment at a frequency of 10k-16k is much more accurate.

Yes, it is impossible to find good quality tape recorders and players these days, so I wanted to know how hard would be to design my own high performance tape recorder. Cassette and reel to reel decks have come a long way in their development, but 8 track recorder development had stopped by 1980. So I wanted to see if I could fit out a 8 track deck with 2020 technology, in process I came up with new ideas around AC bias and a new type of noise reduction. I am now thing of doing a small run of new high end stereo 8 track recorders, as the performance I am getting is well beyond what was possible in the 1970's. But the performances gains with Cassette tape are there, but not good as what was made in with high end decks of the 1990's.

It's a great deck when operating properly. Having someone else restore it is pretty expensive. It's really up to you how important it is to you.
After your mechanical overhaul, you never did the electronic adjustments according to the service manual? Bias oscillator, bias per tape left/right, recording levels per tape type, meter calibration, dolby. Etc etc. All those will have deviated from what should have been according to factory specs. I just did the Nakamichi BX-2 and that alone has over 30 steps to calibrate....
Thanks for commenting. In this video my Sound Technology ST-1510A tape deck analyzer showed that my Dragon more then met it's specs with all tape types but more important, it sounds great. If I only had one piece of gear to play with I'd do it all like you suggest.

Amazing products from the legendary company. Sad they didn't make it in the modern day market. I am sure they would've be making some incredible products nowadays. But, if even Sony went out of the audio business. World has changed and the way of listening music. Nobody cares about the sound quality today, let alone the built quality of the product. All that maters is that a phone can be hooked up to it quickly and wireless. And that compressed music file can be streamed. Sad :(
I own both the nak 1000 dat and 1000p in mint condition…..still works
I was told only 500 units of these made….Is that True

This was the time when Sony and the music industry decided to put a stop to DAT manufacturing due to its super reproduction from the original. Piracy issues .
it´s a very good looking system but being several times burned with this so good brand that never had seen worse ,i never went for this system only because it was a nakamichi or dead in a couple of years for sure
As always nakamichi decks DAT or cassettes always have problems with a short life of use and to repair it ,it´s a work of patience, i just sold everything i had from nakamichi and far from sounding better than other brands decks but bellow several other decks quality ,playing or recording
If there is one thing I have learned in life; There is always something better.. Always. You just don't know about it. Like family court. There has to be something better than that slaughterhouse.

hi if i can fix it i have the model of audio recorder pro model are better to fix love the otari mtr 12 and scully 280-14 decks
the tascam 38 main pcb can go bad and re cap can't fix it the copper tracks go bad on my export model i am a tascam 34 38 fan
they can use parts on many model my scully 280 has a tascam 38 servo motor in the deck and tascam 38 reel motors dc ones

are you related to the late Szan Freiberg? :) had 3 Naks. Nal eskewed Dolbx S an HX Pro; big mistake; Sony surpassedTOTL Naks imo, in 90’s in ewc/play performance, at small fraction of cost. DAT , Pioneer’s Hi.Bit recorders sound best, operating 24/96-

I couldn't help but wonder how many of those Nak's found there way into a dumpster. Some fool thought it was just a crapy old cassette deck.
I think probably a lot. Many went when folks were throwing away their vinyl records years ago.

The problem with all Nak decks is they require a lot of maintenance to keep going and tapes recorded on the Nak only sound good on a Nak they sound flat on other decks because of the strange Bias they apply to the tapes. Beautiful decks but for the average user who is looking at getting into a good quality deck this is not the manufacturer you want to go with.
Any alternative deck recommendations?
@@Patriot6669 there are lots of options too many to mention but affordable decks by Yamaha are very good. Any 3 head deck will give great results if you have a bit more to spend

800 dollars i bought one ,you must be dreaming ,do you know what were 20.000 dollars at the time it was enough to at least buy a better deck i had nakamixchi´s since the first half of the 70´s and i found funny how people today talk about a old and not better deck, i had two because the seller in early 90´s told me it was improved but only more of the same and they have real good decks, it´s only a pitty they built them cheap ,mainly plastic parts in the player/record system that when heating they get out of shape, the 700ZXL and ZX-9 were far better ,having a lot of knobs that most of the owners never used them doesn´t make it better than any other good deck, as an example it´s far worst than the older by 3 years CT-F1250 by Pioneer ,that is a high quality deck for this era ,if it was so good why so many people try to get rid of them while good nakamichi decks never appear for sale and it might appear one in a period of 5 years but recentelly i´ve seen none, you could be better served with a B215 from Revox if good from more than 40 years it´s your goal
Recording devices that cost US$17,000 are really no reason to buy them. Unless I bought 850 records. Who wants to buy that many records?

This looks crappy plastic ugly and will never ever sound 100% perfect due to its fixed auto-reverse tapehead. The price is nonsense at its best.
