I usually use ordinary gardening scissors instead of my bonsai shears, also, and for the same reason.

Question, where do you buy the lava rock you use to top the bonsai? I'm in New Mexico and have never seen it sold at home depot.

How long were cuttings in the bG, and were cuttings already rooted?
Those were seriously just fat sticks that went into the container. Didn't think they would do anything without roots. Here we are!
