Egg-eating snakes or egg-eaters (genus Dasypeltis) live in Africa and are specialized in feeding on bird eggs. These snakes can open their mouth extremely wide and eat an egg which is much bigger than their head! Watch this egg-eating snake swallowing a huge egg, breaking its shell with its cervical vertebrae and then regurgitating the shell. It is an amazing scene! Egg-eaters are non-venomous snakes. In this video you see East African egg-eating snake (Dasypeltis medici).
Big thank you goes to East African Venom Supplies for helping us filming this video: www.bio-ken.com/
chicken: have you seen my egg?
suspiciously egg shaped snake: what egg?
Thanks for watching!
This little dude really had to work hard to feed himself, what a champ! Next level footage!
Thanks for watching! It took 2 hours!
The chicken had to work a lot harder to poop out that baby.

I love how the snake kinda measures how big the egg is first before it eats it
Exactly! They are very clever.
@@LivingZoology every other snake in the planet is an exception..
Yes, I too saw its examination as a curvature measurement! (Commentary says snake is assessing the egg's contents.)
@@priyanshasnani5041 snakes have one braincell and I love them for it
Just silly spicy noodles
They sniff the egg first to figure out if the fetus inside is too developed. They can't digest meat properly so it needs to be very undeveloped to eat safely.
I do not know about any of you, but I am exhausted. Two hours for a meal!! I need a nap. That was the longest 11 and a half minutes of my life. I can only image what the snake was thinking during that time. Again, GREAT VIDEO!! You capture some of the best footage of these animals I have ever seen. This one was no exception. Thank you.
You can imagine how we were feeling! It was 2 AM and we could not move for 2 hours so we did not disturb the snake! We could not feel our legs! We just edited the parts where it was moving, otherwise most of those 2 hours were filled with not much movement. It was eating that egg for a long time :) Happy that you enjoyed watching this video! Happy to be back home and communicating with fans!
@@LivingZoology 2AM!! 2AM?? At what point did you want to reach down and help the snake swallow this egg? For me it would have been around 2:10AM. I now know the ereal reason why this is rarely seen. It takes two hours and starts at 2:00AM!! How long did it take you to edit the video? My legs, butt, back, head, arms, and brain are hurting just thinking about the whole process. I need a Diet Coke!
@@jazzbariman Yes, filming wildlife is not easy sometimes :D Egg-eaters are nocturnal so you cannot usually see this during the day. We did not think that it will take so much time!
@@LivingZoology What keeps whatever laid the egg from returning to the nest and eating the snake that is trying to eat the egg? I imagine that the snake sometimes loses in the struggle to eat more than maybe any other snake. I cannot imagine a Black Mamba being eaten by any of its potential prey, but I could be wrong. What kind of critter laid the egg that this snake took 2 HOURS to eat? It is my guess that whatever it was could have easily eaten the toothless reptile that took 2 HOURS to eat this egg. I am not sure if this species of snake is a wonder of evolution or just a cruel joke on the rest of us. I am still amazed that it took 2 HOURS for this snake to eat. The meal at our wedding reception did not take two hours to set up, eat, or clean up. I have had martini lunches that did not take two hours. This snake is both mind-blowing and mind-numbing for me. I would have thought that some ancestor of this snake in the evolutionary tract would have decided that as good as eggs taste, that some other form of nourishment is just easier, quicker, and tastier to eat.
@@jazzbariman You have to think about the fact that egg-eaters eat all kinds of egg, small ones usually and this one was very big for it. If the eggs are tiny, from some passerines, it can take 1 minute to swallow the egg. These were chicken eggs and it is known that only big adult egg-eaters can swallow them. Of course the snake is vulnerable during feeding, but that is the same for Black mamba eating a big hyrax or anaconda eating a huge capybara. A predator can come and attack the snake.
One of my favorites. The egg-eater and the snail-eater are the most niched snakes out there. So cool. Thanks again for your excellent work!!
Thank you so much!!! Snail-eater feeding would be also amazing to film, we hope that Asian countries will open borders soon! :D
Never heard of snail eating snakes
Never knew that such a snake existed that specialized in eating eggs. Beautiful snake and great footage. *Love from India* 🇮🇳
Thank you very much for watching and happy that you learned something new!
Yeah, they don’t even have teeth.
It would've been so much easier if the snake had broken the egg first, then used a straw - another awesome video.
Hahaha! seriously, that is great idea, but it doesn't work anymore, I guess 😄😄🙏
Yes, hypothetically it would be easier :D But not realistic, maybe in the future egg-eaters will evolve such ability :D :D Thank you for watching!

The level of evolution in this species just blows my mind .. for a human this would probably feel like swallowing a Truck omg 😱
Thanks for the amazing footage 👍
We agree! Amazing adaptation to an empty ecological niche. We did not believe that it will eventually swallow it!

Interesting thing to see for sure!
Wow, the unhinging of the jaw and how it fit perfectly over the correct side of the egg. Evolution is crazy beautiful!! Thank you for the footage my friend
And I LOVE the factoids you give throughout the video

@@LivingZoology the footage at 5:55 where the egg is fully enveloped and the egg eater is looking straight toward the camera must’ve been so so exciting!!!
What a process these snakes go through for a meal. Its amazing.
Yes, it is amazing! We were not sure if the snake will really eat it!
One of the most fascinating things I’ve ever seen.
That is awesome! Thanks for watching!
I knew that they do this, but had never seen it. Extraordinary!
Thank you!!! This was amazing to witness! 2 hours of excitement!
The best footage I ever seen on Dasypeltis. These snakes are remarkable, first as you say they have an incredible sense of smell to choose non incubate eggs (incubate eggs are lesser nutritive and it is a way to preserve the ressource) another interesting point, the egg eater take only one egg in a nest one more time to preserve his resource a sort of perfect durable economy. A last commentary about these snake is for me, the fascinating mimicry between certain species of Dasypleltis and the viperid amongst the most basal of them (with the Azemiopinae what are not really well known), the genus Causus. Certain of them ressemble clearly to Dasypeltis. Dasypeltis scabra and Causus rhombeatus and a good example for round pupil for venomous and slit pupil for non venomous. I love particularly the position of pupils what are sometimes strange, we clearly see that everything in the skull is completely distorted. One more time fantastic.
Thank you very much for watching! Indeed these are amazing snakes! Fascinating behavior and adaptations for survival. Dasypeltis scabra also has an interesting defensive behavior resembling carpet vipers.
Can you delve little bit into the difference between incubate and none incubate eggs? Thanks in advance.
@@ProjectHyena incubate egg is an egg with an embryo in developpement. Non incubate (we must say not yet incubate) is an egg without an embryo, with all constituent of egg (the egg you eat with the white part (albumen) and the yellow part (named yolk). An egg at this stage is considerably more nutritive than an incubate one.

WOW, what an amazing creature, really cute. It's incredible how stretchy its jaw is.
It really is! Thank you for watching!
yet another fascinating video of an incredibly fascinating phenomenon. I kinda feel bad for these creatures, imagine the troubles of going through such a tedious [painful too?] process to swallow your meal. But yeah, thanks to evolution, they found a niche and it 'just works'
Glad you enjoyed watching this video! Egg-eaters fill a very specific niche and yes, sometimes it is not easy for them to swallow huge eggs. But mostly they go for smaller ones. Amazing example of evolution!
Great video again! Such adorable snake :3
Thank you very much! Happy that you like this video :)
Damn and my throat hurts whenever I drink a pill that is the size of my nail I can’t imagine what that snake felt
Thanks for watching! :)
Got here from one of your shorts. Thank you for the long version of this video! It’s fascinating to see an egg eater in action. Thank you for sharing! It’s amazing to see how the snake almost measures the egg before eating it. As if making sure it’s possible to eat! I love snakes. And this one is just beautiful. Egg eater snakes are one of my favourites! They’re so unique! I love snakes so so so much! Egg eaters are fascinating. You can see the snake very much enjoyed the meal! Normally I just see them eating small eggs such as quail or robin eggs. It was very interesting to see! And. At 7:00 Well. Near that time. You were able to see the egg through the skin! That goes to show how fragile they are! But somehow. They still manage to swallow a whole chicken egg! Well. What I expect it to be. It would also be very interesting to see a snail eater. I really love all snakes. I find the cobra’s head shape very interesting. And a regular green tree snake to be beautiful! I just adore snakes! They’re some of the most beautiful reptiles in my opinion. Sadly they have a pretty horrible reputation because of poisonous snakes. But really. They don’t want to injure you. They just want to warn you! I love how stretchy their jaws are. It’s crazy to see how they realign their jaws just to eat! Snakes are adorable and fascinating creatures. I love the little factoids you give throughout the video! Seeing their flexible necks is just crazy! I hope to have a pet snake someday actually! Also. Something I learned is. If you feed a dead animal to a snake. But wave it around a bit. It’s humane. And they get the thrill of the hunt! I love your channel and it’s snakes! I would love to see a snail eater somewhere in them. Thank you! Anyways. That’s all. Thank you for sharing! Love your videos ❤❤❤❤

We are really happy that you love our content!
I noticed the snake was using its body to push the egg into its mouth. So smart! It makes sense why they lost their teeth. That would just make their mouth less slick, so they can't shove it inside with their body.
Exactly, the snake was very clever! Thanks for watching!
Amazing! Even more amazing you were able to capture this on video!
Glad you enjoyed it!!! This was a filmmaking dream coming true!
This looks like it hurts but at the same time it’s so cool

Very true! We did not believe that the snake can make it, but eventually it swallowed the egg!

Mom : what have u eaten

Nothing:-
Haha, this is a big nothing!
The patience of a snake is astounding
It is! We could not move for 2 hours as we did not want to disturb the animal. Our legs got so stiff!
I'm more surprised by the fact it's jaw can go around the egg while looking like it's head is about to explode. I'm astounded at it's head's flexibility, because if it had a boney skull I'm fairly certain it'd explode. Seeing it's head just wrap around that, was just as cool as it was a bit disturbing, looked like it was about to burst.
Imagine swallowing a wrapped burger whole then do some sit-ups to break it up then barf out the wrapper

Evolution works in crazy ways. Instead of providing tools to locate and pierce at a vantage point on the egg, the snake dropped its teeth, developed a flexible jaw, and gut muscles to crack open the egg and then throw out the indigestible shell. Nature is wonderful!
Yes, evolution is not designed by any creator, so it takes unexpected routes sometimes :)
That was interesting… . Great job!
Thank you very much!
@@LivingZoology No problem
I'm curious what that is on the right side of the snake. It doesn't stretch out with the rest of the skin and it has a different color. Towards the end it almost seems like it's fibrous rather than scaly.
We were also thinking at the beginning. It is an old skin which the snake did not shed properly.

We recorded that sound in the forest in Kenya and filmed the scene in that area too with a rescued snake. We only prepared the eggs, let the snake move nearby and hoped it will go to eat.
Who came from TikTok?
Somebody stole our video and posted it on TikTok??
@@LivingZoology nope they turn it into a meme
The snake doesn't seem to be very agile through most of this process, making it vulnerable to other predators. The interesting thing is: how did this kind of egg-eating trait survive evolution? I've seen similar videos of huge non-venomous snakes eating an entire deer by constricting it first. Those ones too, are very prone to attack by other animals as they sit there swallowing their food.
It is amazing that this strategy evolved. Egg-eaters eat bird eggs and live only in Africa. There is one species in India too. In other continents, there are no snakes with this niche. As far as we know, there is no explanation for this.
"Can I have a little bite of that sandwich?" The bite:
Thank you for watching!
Interesting fact video didn't mention about their sense of smell they can tell if the embryo inside is too developed to eat - since their digestive systems cann't digest an embryo that is too developed. And unless the snake is really hungry, they will pass on unfertilized eggs
We mentioned that the egg-eater is checking how old the embryo is inside the egg. There was not enough space to go into more details, but it is a very interesting thing, yes.
@@LivingZoology apologies - didn't mean to say that in a derogatory way - and totally get you can only fit a certain amount of info in a video. Just augmenting :)
Question🙋♀️
Would it eat the egg if it found it already broken, or its just wants them whole?
They mostly eat egg when they are not damaged. It would need to find a very freshly broken egg. They don't eat rotten or old eggs and also don't eat egg with too big embryos inside.
“I’m stuffed!” ah snake 💀
