    Egg-eating snakes or egg-eaters (genus Dasypeltis) live in Africa and are specialized in feeding on bird eggs. These snakes can open their mouth extremely wide and eat an egg which is much bigger than their head! Watch this egg-eating snake swallowing a huge egg, breaking its shell with its cervical vertebrae and then regurgitating the shell. It is an amazing scene! Egg-eaters are non-venomous snakes. In this video you see East African egg-eating snake (Dasypeltis medici).
    Big thank you goes to East African Venom Supplies for helping us filming this video: www.bio-ken.com/

      They sniff the egg first to figure out if the fetus inside is too developed. They can't digest meat properly so it needs to be very undeveloped to eat safely.

      @@LivingZoology What keeps whatever laid the egg from returning to the nest and eating the snake that is trying to eat the egg? I imagine that the snake sometimes loses in the struggle to eat more than maybe any other snake. I cannot imagine a Black Mamba being eaten by any of its potential prey, but I could be wrong. What kind of critter laid the egg that this snake took 2 HOURS to eat? It is my guess that whatever it was could have easily eaten the toothless reptile that took 2 HOURS to eat this egg. I am not sure if this species of snake is a wonder of evolution or just a cruel joke on the rest of us. I am still amazed that it took 2 HOURS for this snake to eat. The meal at our wedding reception did not take two hours to set up, eat, or clean up. I have had martini lunches that did not take two hours. This snake is both mind-blowing and mind-numbing for me. I would have thought that some ancestor of this snake in the evolutionary tract would have decided that as good as eggs taste, that some other form of nourishment is just easier, quicker, and tastier to eat.

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  Před 2 lety +8

      @@jazzbariman You have to think about the fact that egg-eaters eat all kinds of egg, small ones usually and this one was very big for it. If the eggs are tiny, from some passerines, it can take 1 minute to swallow the egg. These were chicken eggs and it is known that only big adult egg-eaters can swallow them. Of course the snake is vulnerable during feeding, but that is the same for Black mamba eating a big hyrax or anaconda eating a huge capybara. A predator can come and attack the snake.

    The best footage I ever seen on Dasypeltis. These snakes are remarkable, first as you say they have an incredible sense of smell to choose non incubate eggs (incubate eggs are lesser nutritive and it is a way to preserve the ressource) another interesting point, the egg eater take only one egg in a nest one more time to preserve his resource a sort of perfect durable economy. A last commentary about these snake is for me, the fascinating mimicry between certain species of Dasypleltis and the viperid amongst the most basal of them (with the Azemiopinae what are not really well known), the genus Causus. Certain of them ressemble clearly to Dasypeltis. Dasypeltis scabra and Causus rhombeatus and a good example for round pupil for venomous and slit pupil for non venomous. I love particularly the position of pupils what are sometimes strange, we clearly see that everything in the skull is completely distorted. One more time fantastic.

      @@ProjectHyena incubate egg is an egg with an embryo in developpement. Non incubate (we must say not yet incubate) is an egg without an embryo, with all constituent of egg (the egg you eat with the white part (albumen) and the yellow part (named yolk). An egg at this stage is considerably more nutritive than an incubate one.

    Got here from one of your shorts. Thank you for the long version of this video! It’s fascinating to see an egg eater in action. Thank you for sharing! It’s amazing to see how the snake almost measures the egg before eating it. As if making sure it’s possible to eat! I love snakes. And this one is just beautiful. Egg eater snakes are one of my favourites! They’re so unique! I love snakes so so so much! Egg eaters are fascinating. You can see the snake very much enjoyed the meal! Normally I just see them eating small eggs such as quail or robin eggs. It was very interesting to see! And. At 7:00 Well. Near that time. You were able to see the egg through the skin! That goes to show how fragile they are! But somehow. They still manage to swallow a whole chicken egg! Well. What I expect it to be. It would also be very interesting to see a snail eater. I really love all snakes. I find the cobra’s head shape very interesting. And a regular green tree snake to be beautiful! I just adore snakes! They’re some of the most beautiful reptiles in my opinion. Sadly they have a pretty horrible reputation because of poisonous snakes. But really. They don’t want to injure you. They just want to warn you! I love how stretchy their jaws are. It’s crazy to see how they realign their jaws just to eat! Snakes are adorable and fascinating creatures. I love the little factoids you give throughout the video! Seeing their flexible necks is just crazy! I hope to have a pet snake someday actually! Also. Something I learned is. If you feed a dead animal to a snake. But wave it around a bit. It’s humane. And they get the thrill of the hunt! I love your channel and it’s snakes! I would love to see a snail eater somewhere in them. Thank you! Anyways. That’s all. Thank you for sharing! Love your videos ❤❤❤❤

      I'm more surprised by the fact it's jaw can go around the egg while looking like it's head is about to explode. I'm astounded at it's head's flexibility, because if it had a boney skull I'm fairly certain it'd explode. Seeing it's head just wrap around that, was just as cool as it was a bit disturbing, looked like it was about to burst.

    Evolution works in crazy ways. Instead of providing tools to locate and pierce at a vantage point on the egg, the snake dropped its teeth, developed a flexible jaw, and gut muscles to crack open the egg and then throw out the indigestible shell. Nature is wonderful!

    I'm curious what that is on the right side of the snake. It doesn't stretch out with the rest of the skin and it has a different color. Towards the end it almost seems like it's fibrous rather than scaly.

    • @LivingZoology

    The snake doesn't seem to be very agile through most of this process, making it vulnerable to other predators. The interesting thing is: how did this kind of egg-eating trait survive evolution? I've seen similar videos of huge non-venomous snakes eating an entire deer by constricting it first. Those ones too, are very prone to attack by other animals as they sit there swallowing their food.

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  Před rokem +1

      It is amazing that this strategy evolved. Egg-eaters eat bird eggs and live only in Africa. There is one species in India too. In other continents, there are no snakes with this niche. As far as we know, there is no explanation for this.

    Interesting fact video didn't mention about their sense of smell they can tell if the embryo inside is too developed to eat - since their digestive systems cann't digest an embryo that is too developed. And unless the snake is really hungry, they will pass on unfertilized eggs

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  Před 2 lety

      We mentioned that the egg-eater is checking how old the embryo is inside the egg. There was not enough space to go into more details, but it is a very interesting thing, yes.

    Would it eat the egg if it found it already broken, or its just wants them whole?

    • @LivingZoology
      @LivingZoology  Před 2 lety +4

      They mostly eat egg when they are not damaged. It would need to find a very freshly broken egg. They don't eat rotten or old eggs and also don't eat egg with too big embryos inside.
