  • I used to work with this guy who claimed that David Lee Roth was the best frontman of all-time, and that Paul Rodgers was the best rock vocalist. Although I knew of Rodgers at the time, it had never occurred to me that he might be not just good, but one of the best. He has one of those voices that is so powerful, no matter how high he sings, it never sounds high, because he’s full-throated all the way to the top of his range. And I think it’s this quality of his voice that tricks you into thinking you can sing his songs. With this song in particular, I didn’t even need to reach the chorus before realizing that this one, like many others of his, is impossibly difficult to sing.
So I started singing it lower, and gradually worked my way up until I found the area where it felt right to me. This led me to learning this tune in a new way. I didn’t go back and listen to the original recording, and I have no idea what key it’s in. All I know is that I’m singing it lower than Paul did, my guitar is tuned down 1/2 step, and I start off playing Am C D C (throw in a few G’s and F’s, plus a few little fills, and there you have it!). Since I didn’t learn this from the original recording, but how I remembered it sounding and feeling to me, I’m sure some parts are different/missing/etc. It was a lot of fun to rebuild the song based on my own imperfect memory of it.
The absolute coolest piece of info I learned about Paul Rodgers is that after Jim Morrison’s death in 1971, all 3 of the surviving Doors wanted Paul to be their new vocalist. He said he was hiding out in the countryside at the time, or something like that, and so the moment passed and it never happened. I like Bad Company well enough, but, boy oh boy, how I wish that Paul Rodgers had joined The Doors back then!!!!
