  • NASCAR on FOX is in the midst of its 24th NASCAR season in coverage. With the new 2025 TV deal NASCAR fans are locked in through year 31 with FOX Sports. With that being said it becomes more important for the broadcasters (who have already received large criticism since 2017) to improve. So, we need to talk about NASCAR on FOX… again.

The booth’s biggest problem is there isn’t a good split between the driver and crew chief/team perspective like there was with DW and Larry Mac. Having 2 drivers in the booth at the track is a great loss as someone with a crew chief perspective can give more technical and strategy insight. Larry Mac was great at this but I doubt he’d come back full-time like he was. That’s what NBC still excels at with having Steve Letarte in the booth. Bowyer is annoying half the time anyways.

Completely agree with all the points made but you missed a big one: the starting line up as the cars roll around the track. They show the graphics and play the music for the first 2 rows, then just stop to do an in-car interview. Then the graphics and music start again and they show a few more rows. Then stop again for another interview. Then throw the graphics back up with the music through row 7, stop and say here's the rest on the bottom of the screen while we talk some more.
It's not just awkward, it's jarring. Bring back the 3D cars and the awesome funky early 2000s music. And for the love of god, announce the whole field. Even David Starr deserves a mention.

I don't mind it when old drivers like kevin harvick, clint bowyer, jeff gordon, etc are talking about the racel/old stories/joking around. What I have huge issues with is how a crash can happen and they not show us it, how hamlin jumping a restart doesn't get shown even after the checkard and it takes a whole race to be shown, how they cut away from stuff getting good. Those are huge issues

@clangston3 they "left it at that" because NASCAR officials said he didn't jump the start. It amazes me to no end how folks that run no-budget internet forums and couch-officials like yourself think they can run an extremely complex process like covering a live sport better than the people actually doing it. I think people like yall just like complaining and I for one am tired of this channel and the constant negative Nancy's that apparently make up his core audience.
If one makes focusing on what's wrong in anything, it shouldn't surprise them that their overall experience ends up being negative no matter what. There's literally no pleasing people like that...smfh

The first 10+ years of Fox were great. It treated NASCAR with respect and had some fun with it as well. Now it’s treated like a joke. I hate when to go to segments during race action and go to full screen on the segment name for a few seconds, and that takes away from the viewer from seeing racing. The booth has gotten better this year, but overall Fox doesn’t present nascar like a big important event. Especially when they moved the pre and post race coverage to a studio. Hopefully with 3 new TV partners next year, fox will finally step up their game

The only positive things I have liked from FOX this year were:
    -Highlighting driver pit crews
-Harvick being in the booth and not making jokes all the time like Bowyer
-Raceday stories (its sometimes fun to see some drivers lives outside the track)
The things I don't like or need to be fixed:
-Truck booth (keep Jamie Little on pit road and have people like Alexander and Shaheen being the lead)
-Crank it up on pit road (it's fine every once in a while but when it becomes a weekly thing its irritating bc its more fun to listen to the cars on the racetrack)
-Production and camera team (there's cameras around almost the entire racetrack no excuse to miss or cut from a crash)
-Commercials (at least at some points in the race not just every 10-20 laps that's why I watch the international streams)
-Cartoons (we have production days for a reason and they just don't look that good the other 2 series use them so just go back to real pictures)
-Audio (like AutoRockinRacing94 points out playing onboard audio during crashes is infuriating unless they are actually showing an onboard)
-Cringe segments/skits (just why I get maybe appealing to kids but its just cringe)

    • @atkearly1
      @atkearly1 Před 2 měsíci

It's also annoying to add to the "Audio" part. They do someone's onboard during full speed replays. Don't matter what camera they used, even from the helicopter/blimp. No vroom-vroom, tires screeching, etc. when they used a "wall cam".

Zooming in on one car of the pack, then blocking everything in front of that car with the scoring ticker. No reason that can't be a top scroller like it used to be.
Cutting away from action to show the leader who has checked into a different zip code
Saying dumb things like they did this week like claiming that cars that short pitted "wouldn't have to wait as long for fuel.". Listen, neither the crew chiefs nor the fans are stupid. If there's 50 laps to go, and I can go 40 laps on a tank of fuel, that means I'm going to need an additional 10 laps worth of fuel to make it to the end of the race. From there it doesn't matter if I put with 40 to go, 10 to go, or anywhere in between, I still need the same amount of fuel to get to the finish. If that's roughly 4 gallons, then thats going to be like 4 seconds worth of fuel no matter how you slice it. It's a stupid talking point trying to make a mundane pit stop sound like strategic genius.

One thing I think they should do in regards to the graphics and whatnot is perhaps look into bringing back what they had in the early 2000s such as the portrait clip of the drivers next to a animation of the cars weaveing back and forth while going through the starting grid and bring back some of the music/themes also while they're at at. Just go and look up the starting lineup/grid for the 2002 Pepsi 400 or the 2001 Daytona 500 on CZcams for examples, perhaps they could bring that style back as a experiment for the newer modern day fans later on this year, perhaps at Darlington, North Wilkesboro or Charlotte as a throwback to the graphics and themes back in the day to see the reactions of the fans watching on TV when it comes to the older fans alongside the newer modern day fans.

I hope, even though it’s a long shot of ever happening, that we can at least have a television call that’s on the same level of professionalism as what F1 currently has.

  • @BUSCUIT28
    @BUSCUIT28 Před 2 měsíci +1

Something you didn't mention that really bothers me is full screen cutaways that are completely unnecessary. If they want to talk to a driver at the care center, crew chief, whoever, I don't think we need the whole screen to take up the interview. If it's under caution, fine, but during the race? No, put that person in a PIP, just like we used to.
As for the points in the video, all of which were valid, A lot of it could be fixed without any budget changes, so it's really a matter of execs being stupid. It doesn't cost anything for the camera guys to zoom-in less and it doesn't cost them anything to stop the random screen cuts. It's just bad management.
That said, I do feel that them putting races on cable networks is a particularly bad decision, especially with more and more people dropping cable TV. If NASCAR wants to be considered a major sport, they have to be on major networks.

I think their biggest missteps were the reality shows and the overabundance of NASCAR talk shows, but I think they did everything else right.
I think 2 of said NASCAR shows done really well (Race Hub and some sort of Inside Cup roundtable show revival) would be just the right amount of extra NASCAR coverage that doesn't feel overabundant.
The SPEED Channel did a fantastic job of making the entire world of motorsports feel like a grand event that embodied the pinnacle of competition and visual spectacle, and covered it with a high degree of professionalism balanced with a lighthearted feel in a way that I don't think anyone else has been able to replicate.
BTW, bringing back SPEED Center and Wind Tunnel (maybe with David Land as Dave Despain's successor?) wouldn't hurt, either. I believe the market has been begging for some sort of a SportsCenter like show dedicated to auto racing for over a decade now.

Casual NASCAR fan here, primarily WEC and Supercars. I partially disagree about tight shots, when applied correctly it can give great TV perspective on a cars behavior, giving insight into differences in comparative set-ups. That's the thing, broadcasters need to experiment with the how to apply them with ovals (and with any luck listen to feedback and criticism). On road courses the formula is usually the same: low angle, fixed or limited fov, set up pointed at the apex or a kerb or on the exit. Ovals could definitely present issues. I also think the super slow-motion shots they do need to be applied to more that just wrecks or outstanding moments, they can also be applied to the "mundane" parts of racing, like a tight shot of the leader nearing the end of a tire stint and comparing how well their tires are hanging on or falling off. Or tight, low, fixed, and super slow-mos of cars exiting 2 at Darlington (not sure if they do that already, if so, that's proper application).

As an Indycar fan in addition to NASCAR, I really hope that they don't sign a deal with Fox for 2025 as is rumored because Fox would take the awfulness of their NASCAR coverage & absolutely make Indycar's TV coverage even worse than it already is with NBC. Speaking of NBC, it is clear to me based on their coverage so far this season that they really want to boot Indycar off of their networks after this season (when the current TV deal ends) & are heavily favoring NASCAR/IMSA over Indycar. An example of this is Leigh Diffey recently being named the new voice of their NASCAR coverage which will likely result in someone who has no experience calling Indycar calling the last 4-5 races of the Indycar season before NBC calls it quits. I also haven't seen any ads from NBC promoting the Indy 500 which tells me that they do not care about Indycar one bit. Indycar really needs to create its own free streaming service when it comes to airing races next season as I don't think any broadcaster (apart from Fox) is interested in Indycar even with the Indy 500 as the marquee event. Even Amazon Prime & Apple TV have said they aren't interested in Indycar which tells you how far Indycar has fallen in the eyes of broadcasters.

I think the issue of missing the accidents comes down to the mentality of the production team and what they’re trying to catch live. Here’s why:
The amount of tempers flaring, intentional crashes, arguments, and fights has gone up dramatically in the past 7 years. Fox knows that’s what people like to see, they like that excitement so if they catch as much of that as possible it should boost ratings. You can tell they’re looking for battles for position all the time hoping one will not turn out well. When you focus on that too much, you start to miss other things that happen. To put it another way, it’s as if you were watching football, the broadcast focuses on the tackles so much hoping that someone will get punched or horse collared that they miss where the ball is thrown. That’s what it feels like.
