I "discovered" Tokiko Kato in the late 60's/early 70's. I was watching a Japan-based variety program being aired in Los Angeles and although I am of Japanese ancestry, I don't understand Japanese except for a few words. I fell in love with her immediately. She appeared on the program wearing bell bottoms, a vest, and playing the guitar, totally different from entertainers of that era. Her voice and song were mesmerizing. I didn't know who she was, and apparently neither did my parents. I went to a shop in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo that carried music from Japan and began searching through albums one by one, looking for anyone that looked like her. I found her and bought fours albums from 1967 to 72 and have them still, although I had them digitally converted into CDs which I play to this day. She reminded me of a Japanese "Joan Baez" at that time, and I knew from a few of the words that some of her songs talked abut the war, and a father being far away from his son. I have collected several of her CDs since, but the albums I owned first are my favorites. If I had the chance, I'd love to see her live!
'Bell bottoms and a vest'.That's my kind of woman. I am - as I type this nonsense -in a bit of a bidding war for one of her albums.( I;ve only come across one album. So for you to mention four!!!!I am so jealous!).I stumbled across her due to being a HUGE fan of Hako Yamasaki.Put it this way: Late this year/early next year - my Japanese HAS to be acceptable enough - I will look for places where she might play; Hako, that is.I understand your ' Tokiko thing' for I am the same when it comes to Hako. Now,then I am of to listen to Tokiko....but only via CZcams. But once I have won the bidding war.......!
I fell in love with this woman back in the early '70's when I first came across her work via Japanese friend. Couldn't buy her work in New Zealand, and it wasn't until I bought a computer and searched on You Tube that I became reacquainted with her music many years later. Gorgeous! Am still searching for a song called "Ginza No Suzume."
