After ride the lightning, you can see shift away from his riffs to kirk hammets. No in a bad way , just very different. Be interested to see if Dave stayed in how they might sound. @@voodoocustompickups2547 My point is that Death evolved a considerable amount from their Screem bloody gore to The Sound of Perserverance. The song writing vastly improved, the complexity improved, the lyrical content also became more mature going from zombies and that sort of thing to drug taking during pregnancy and so on. The one thing they stayed through to was their sound. Of course their sound changed somewhat but not to ridiculous levels like Metallica.
People say that Metallica have evolved over the years but realistically they have two distinct sounds. Progressive thrash on the first four albums plus DM. And just groove rock on the rest. They havnt evolved that much. Unless you want to talk about St Anger which I think we shouldn't 😂

The reason the Guitar is so rad on this first album was because Dave Mustane, lead singer of Megadeth was their lead guitarist. After he got kicked out, Kirk, his replacement, has gone on record to say he had to take professional Guitar lessons for a while to get on the level of the band. Dave Mustaine, Cliff, and even James were beasts back then. It's my favorite Metallica album just for the rawness, and for the pure thrash on tracks like 'Hit The Lights', and 'Whiplash' (both of which you should check out some time).

I have been playing guitar for 27 years. Used to play in several metal bands. In the beginning, it is very painful as you learn to play. After a while you develop calluses on your finger tips. Then if you play as much as a regular gigging band does There is more pain. On tour I used to use super glue on my finger tips because yes, they would start to rip open and bleed. The super glue hardens in the wounds and covers your finger tips. Then you develop even harder calluses. I don't even have finger prints on the tips of my fingers anymore. LOL!

Brandon asked about growling technique so I'll get into it a bit. The screams and growls in any band don't actually come from your throat if done healthily. The come from the false Vocal folds, the epiglotis, the soft pallette, and nasal area.
If you try to scream and growl through the vocal folds, it causes them to slam together and swell. This can destroy your voice, which many (including James from Metallica) actually ended up doing.
Examples of proper screaming/growling can be seen in bands like Jinjer, Spiritbox, and Eskimo Callboy. For instance, the lead singer of Jinjer can go from growling and screaming, directly back into clean vocals. This shows she is doing it the healthy way, as if she wasn't, she couldn't go directly back into clean vocals.
A great way to get an idea is to clear your throat, as though you're trying to get someone's attention. Notice how the sound is generated and vibrates right at the throat opening and the roof of your mouth? That is the part if your anatomy used for proper metal growls and screams.
I've been practicing this for a while and am half decent at it, following vocal coach tutorials on CZcams. It'd a cool trick to learn!
