I am a Marine Nam combat vet , cant believe I made it back from there to this day. Got banged , up but alive , and thankful to God everyday . I was called up at #180 out of 200 drafted in my small town in 73, classified 4f because of epilepsy .I wanted to go ,but i guess they didn't trust me tossing hand grenades' while having a seizure .
When I got back from my first tour in Iraq in 03 I understood this song, I switched from the army to the Marine Corps and did two more tours in Iraq back to back tours 07@08 the song still means the same thing. Semper Fi to all my Brother Devils.
I was in Country when this song was popular. I still would go back all over again. Tough times, but it seems we were more civilized and knew where we stood back then. Long live the 60”s.
In this song, you can hear the helicopters in the strings and the gunfire in the percussion. The overall theme of the lyrics fit not only the fear the soldiers have, knowing that at any point you could just die from not just enemy fire but there is also the possibility of friendly fire, and also the overall feeling towards the war on the home front.
My husband was wounded there. Took him a year to heal physically. I may not agree with the wars we've been in but I am always 100% behind our soldiers. God bless them all, past and present. Loved the TV show Tour Of Duty.
Right on, but it is depressing. And I do salute and respect all of our soldiers who fought there. Even though I didn't think we should have been there.

Watching this and listening just gives me chills. A horrible time to be 18-20, yes, but I'd never even witness it in what it was. I'm just a dumb gen-z, 7th Grade. I'll never know what those people felt, and what they did. I only know one person who was in the war in my family. I can't remember their name, but they said they participated as a paratrooper. I'll never know, but all I have is a guess.
I served in the Airforce PJ's in 1966. Wasn't fun. When I got back from the war, me and my good buddy were harassed by people calling us "Baby Killers" and Spitting on us.
I remember the body counts on the evening news, the number of American Soldiers killed each day, I was a teenager when the Vietnam war ended. I am sure my mom was glad the war ended while I was in High School.
Oh about @ halfway through this, I had missed that one scene of a, I'm pretty sure, Marine hurling that grenade. Even though, in the Army and when I was in, when a Soldier had a "curl" on his hat, or as the Marines say, "cover," that that was only reserved for U.S. Army Rangers, hence, a "Ranger Curl"...

Does anyone remember the Television series about the Vietnam War that used this as its intro song? I thought it was called In Country but can't find any info on it.
So much music from the late 60's & early 70's were a platform to reveal the bloodshed, & a melancholy, plaintiff cry for ending the slaughter, especially during the Vietnam War. My brother & uncle were both lucky enough to survive their tours in Vietnam. But later, both died, far too early, as a result of cancer from 'Agent Orange' & emotional trauma...I'm 70 yrs old & can tell you with complete certainty, nobody during that war really 'survived' it...& not one person I've ever known, including my brother & uncle, could ever explain why they were there, fighting that effing, ugly war. They had no choice, tho, because of the draft, they had to go. An awful lot of brave, courageous young men died there, & far too many Vietnamese civilians, too. And, as far as anybody can explain, it was pretty much for absolutely no logical reason, whatsoever. If there is a reasonable explanation for the Vietnam War, I'd be open to hearing it. But I expect there's nothing to hear, but....crickets. RIP...all the Veterans & people, now gone. 😔😢
Until now I still don’t get it in my head why Vietnam-America war ever happen, America and Allies drop 7.5 Million tons of bombs during 1965-75, over 2 million Vietnamist civilians died, this civilians are poor, defensless and innocent people, I still don’t understand killing them for what ?
My Mom's hair was red. There were blacks who wanted to paint the red door black. She had a son with the Big Red One (battalion) killed in Vietnam. Blacks have actively campaigned against ALL her children and do the same to this day. It's been going on since 1959. Have a nice day.
