Thompson in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” in his numerous Tim Burton movies - with being the face of a giant blockbuster franchise in Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Depp has been seen as an A-list star who loves to take chances. And it made him beloved the world over.
In the wake of his messy divorce from actress Amber Heard following her allegations that he abused her and recent financial woes, however, Depp’s superstar status is now in jeopardy.
The stories coming out about Depp’s behavior while making the latest “Pirates” movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” aren't going to help. They portray an actor in crisis mode.
The Hollywood Reporter delved deeper into the star’s reported reckless spending over the years and revealed allegations that he was constantly late to set and drank excessively while making “Dead Men Tell No Tales” (opening in theaters May 26).
Not enough liquid money for '$2 million in monthly bills'
Depp is engaged in a legal battle with his former business managers at The Management Group, who claim that the star, despite earning more than $650 million in 13-plus years, there wasn't enough liquid cash to cover Depp's "$2 million in monthly bills," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The business managers say they confronted Depp about his spending habits, which included, they say, $30,000 a month on wine. Depp has also admitted to paying $5 million to shoot the ashes of his friend Hunter S. Thompson out of a cannon.
Depp has sued The Management Group on charges of fraud and mismanagement, and the company has countersued.
A 'Pirates' staffer was reportedly tasked with following Depp's every move
THR also unearthed unflattering stories about Depp's work on the set of "Dead Men Tell No Tales" from production sources.
Depp's lateness to the set of the movie on certain days reportedly led to hundreds of extras waiting hours for the star to show up, causing the movie’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney production chief Sean Bailey to huddle to figure out how to shoot around him.
Though production staff raised the matter of Depp’s tardiness with the star, he reportedly never changed his habits.
"There were certainly days when our plans were challenged," Bailey said. "But no one should underestimate Johnny's passion and commitment to this character and franchise."
One source told THR that it got so bad that a production staffer was assigned to stake out Depp at the Coomera, Queensland, compound Depp rented while shooting the film. The staffer was stationed outside the house in an unmarked car and was told to alert his superiors of Depp’s movements, including when a light was switched on in the morning (or in some cases the afternoon), signaling Depp was awake.
"When he got up, he'd turn on the light, and the moment the light went on they'd call the line producer, who would then call the directors [Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg]: 'He's up! He's getting ready!'" a source from the set said. "They even had a special code term, like 'The eagle has landed.' Johnny had no idea this was going on."
Filming shut down after Depp injured himself by seriously cutting his finger. According to numerous reports at the time, the injury occurred when Depp was inebriated and had a dispute with Heard. Bruckheimer told a different story to THR.
"We don't really know. He got it caught in a car door, or he got it caught in a sliding door. I've heard a couple of versions,” Bruckheimer said.
Depp’s reported drinking and lateness to set also caused an argument between Bruckheimer and Depp’s then-agent Tracey Jacobs on the "Pirates" set, according to a soruce.
“She went over to Jerry and said, 'You've got to do something! You're the producer.’ He said, 'You do something. You're the agent,’” the source said.
“Everyone was an innocent bystander watching this trainwreck," the source continued. "But when Johnny came on set, he was charming, nice. He's yin and yang."
Bruckheimer denied to THR that the spat took place.
The reporting is just the latest black eye for Depp, who for most of his career has been able to keep negative press about himself to a minimum.
But so far, at least, it hasn’t hurt him from landing major roles. Following his cameo at the end of 2016’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” he is set to star in the movie’s sequel coming out in 2018. He’s also wrapped on the highly anticipated “Murder on the Orient Express.”
A representative for Depp did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Pirates was one of Disney's best original live action work (that wasn't Pixar or CGI animations) and the man that made it all work was Johnny Depp and his portrayal as Captain Jack Sparrow...he just oozes with charisma and swagger, I literally can't think of anyone else that could play Sparrow the way Depp did. Depp burnt his style of acting into that character and there can only be one now, no cheap imitations just the original! He's so unique.

There are some advantages to be a middle-aged woman with Asperger’s syndrome, and one of those is that I lived through the 80s as a teen and remember it. And what I remember is that Johnny Depp was known as a ‘bad boy’ with a ‘temper’ and a substance abuse problem prone to attacking people.
The people who defend him online, which now tragically includes a woman I had hitherto had nothing but the utmost respect, JK Rowling, seem to have either forgotten or don’t know that the accusations of domestic abuse and assault against Depp by his ex-wife Amber Heard (which include pictures and video and a restraining order against Depp and a text from his manager admitting it and documents from other court cases involving Depp) are just the latest in a line of charges.
Johnny Depp is very pretty and (like Mel Gibson) seems to be very nice when he’s sober, but he’s also prone to getting wasted and hitting people who anger him. In 1989, Depp was arrested for assaulting a hotel security guard in Canada after the guard asked a drunken Depp and his friends to leave the premises. Charges against Deep were dropped after he promised a judge to be a good boy. (This works only if you are white or rich or preferably both.)
Then, in 1994, Depp was arrested again on charges of criminal mischief when he destroyed a hotel room - allegedly because he was having a fight with his girlfriend at the time, 20 year old supermodel Kate Moss. He had to pay almost $10,000 in damages, but again he got off. Likewise, in 1999, Depp was arrested for threatening the paparazzi in London. While it is easy to sympathize with a star threatening paparazzi, it still reveals Depp’s tendency toward violence when he’s hammered and annoyed.
Incidentally, he was involved with French model Vanessa Pradis at the time, and although Pradis has defended him as a “sensitive, loving” man who never abused her, its obvious he was still capable of attacking OTHER people during their relationship. Bill Cosby didn’t rape every woman he met … it doesn’t mean he isn’t a rapist. Moreover, court documents by Depp’s former management allege “[Depp was being] interviewed by public authorities relating to a serious and troubling issue involving his family … [Depp] knowingly lied to public authorities in several respects in connection with these matters… [His actions] marked lack of concern for certain serious family issues.” So is Pradis lying for her children?
Johnny Depp was physically abusive to Amber Heard. People accuse his ex-wife for his actions by saying she ‘egged him on’ so they can still enjoy the fandom fantasy of who he is. Just like his friends and fans claimed his rages and assaults in the past were “just Johnny being Johnny,” merely the kind of “outbursts they have come to expect on occasion from an actor who can be as otherworldly as the character he played in Edward Scissorhands.”

As for me, I won’t be watching the Fantastic Beasts sequel. I don’t watch the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. I don’t listen to my old Bill Cosby comedy albums or watch his videos. I don’t watch Woody Allen films, and I am hesitant to watch films with actors who have even worked with him in the last 20 years. (Oscars are so much more important than raped little girls?) I eschew any former favorites with Mel Gibson in them.
I am torn about Miramax films … which ones were the result of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual abuse? I stopped watching How I Met Your Mother, even the reruns, when they had Mike Tyson, a convicted rapist, on the show as a ‘good guy’. (Which was a good move because the last season was reportedly shit.) I try my best not to collude with or support abusers and rapists.
But what to do about actors or authors whom I otherwise like when they support or collude with rapists and abusers whom they insist are actually ‘good people’? Do they get a little leeway for having the same delusions about their friends and family that all human beings are capable of? I still love Rowling’s books; am I hypocritical to do so or would I be throwing the baby out with the bathwater because she defended know abuser Johnny Depp?
Denial is certainly EASIER to live with than the complexity of dealing with the fall-out of sexual and domestic violence. I can see why people prefer denial to facing uncomfortable reality.

John Lasseter's Pattern of Alleged Misconduct Detailed by Disney/Pixar Insiders

One longtime Pixar employee says Lasseter was known for "grabbing, kissing, making comments about physical attributes."
Rashida Jones is still credited as a writer on Toy Story 4, the next installment in the beloved franchise. But, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, the actress and her writing partner at the time, Will McCormack, left the project early on after John Lasseter, the acclaimed head of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation, made an unwanted advance.
THR made repeated requests for comment to Jones and McCormack starting on Nov. 7 but received no response. In a Nov. 21 statement to The New York Times, Jones and McCormack said, "We did not leave Pixar because of unwanted advances. That is untrue. That said, we are happy to see people speaking out about behavior that made them uncomfortable. We parted ways because of creative and, more importantly, philosophical differences." They described Pixar as "a culture where women and people of color do not have an equal creative voice," adding, "We encourage Pixar to be leaders in bolstering, hiring and promoting more diverse and female storytellers and leaders.” Disney declined to comment on the alleged incident involving Jones though a studio source said the departure was over "creative differences."
Multiple sources at Pixar and in the animation community spoke with THR about Lasseter's alleged behavior but asked not to be named out of fear that their careers in the tight-knit animation community would be damaged. Based on their accounts, the alleged incident involving Jones was not an isolated occurrence. One longtime Pixar employee says Lasseter, who is well-known for hugging employees and others in the entertainment community, was also known by insiders for "grabbing, kissing, making comments about physical attributes." Multiple sources say Lasseter is known to drink heavily at company social events such as premiere parties, but this source says the behavior was not always confined to such settings.
Now Lasseter is taking a leave of absence from Pixar after acknowledging "painful" conversations and unspecified "missteps," he wrote in a memo to staff on Tuesday. The leave is said to be for six months, a source tells THR.
"I have always wanted our animation studios to be places where creators can explore their vision with the support and collaboration of other gifted animators and storytellers," Lasseter stated. "This kind of creative culture takes constant vigilance to maintain. It's built on trust and respect, and it becomes fragile if any members of the team don't feel valued. As a leader, it's my responsibility to ensure that doesn't happen; and I now believe I have been falling short in this regard."
The executive added: "I've recently had a number of difficult conversations that have been very painful for me. It's never easy to face your missteps, but it's the only way to learn from them."
It is hard to overstate Lasseter's value to Disney. He is known as the genius behind Pixar films from Toy Story to Inside Out to Coco, opening Nov. 22. He took charge of Walt Disney Animation in 2006 and led a revival that included such gigantic hits as Frozen.
Sources say some women at Pixar knew to turn their heads quickly when encountering him to avoid his kisses. Some used a move they called "the Lasseter" to prevent their boss from putting his hands on their legs.
A longtime insider says he saw a woman seated next to Lasseter in a meeting that occurred more than 15 years ago. "She was bent over and [had her arm] across her thigh," he says. "The best I can describe it is as a defensive posture ... John had his hand on her knee, though, moving around." After that encounter, this person asked the woman about what he had seen. "She said it was unfortunate for her to wear a skirt that day and if she didn't have her hand on her own right leg, his hand would have traveled."
The same source said he once noticed an oddly cropped photo of Lasseter standing between two women at a company function. When he mentioned that to a colleague, he was told, "We had to crop it. Do you know where his hands were?"
Another former insider remembers awkward encounters with Lasseter, who liked - as many in the industry do - to hug in meetings. "You'd hug him and he'd whisper in your ear, a long time," this person says. "He hugged and hugged and everyone's looking at you. Just invading the space."
Disney's statement regarding Lasseter's leave of absence read, "We are committed to maintaining an environment in which all employees are respected and empowered to do their best work. We appreciate John’s candor and sincere apology and fully support his sabbatical."
Lasseter is best known as one of the founders of Pixar, which began as a part of the graphics group at Lucasfilm. Along with Ed Catmull, he popularized CGI in animation with early films like Monsters Inc. In 2006, after Disney purchased Pixar, Lasseter was named the chief creative officer of both Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. He has since become the face of all Disney animation, overseeing the recent resurgence of the studio's namesake brand with properties like Frozen and Moana.
While Lasseter has won two Oscars (one is a specialty Oscar for his work on Toy Story), Pixar has racked up eight best animated feature wins. Under Lasseter's purview, WDA has picked up three wins, most recently with 2016's Zootopia.
Pixar films have grossed over $6 billion at the domestic box office. The Emeryville-based company is set to release its next feature, Coco, on Wednesday. Pixar is currently working on a sequel to The Incredibles and the fourth Toy Story installment. WDA will release the Wreck It Ralph sequel next year.
A former Pixar employee requesting anonymity says Lasseter's leave of absence statement is "ridiculous" and "trivializing this behavior." The employee adds, "To sum this up as unwanted hugs is belittling and demeaning. If it was just unwanted hugs, he wouldn't be stepping down."

Emma Thompson explains in a scathing letter why she dropped out of the voice cast of Skydance Animation’s upcoming film “Luck.”
The British star, who did some recording for the movie, left the project in mid-January in the wake of John Lasseter’s hire to the top animation job at David Ellison’s studio. Her reps released a letter on Tuesday, first published in the Los Angeles Times, that Thompson sent to Skydance management last month. Skydance had no comment.
Here’s Thompson’s entire letter:
As you know, I have pulled out of the production of “Luck” - to be directed by the very wonderful Alessandro Carloni. It feels very odd to me that you and your company would consider hiring someone with Mr. Lasseter’s pattern of misconduct given the present climate in which people with the kind of power that you have can reasonably be expected to step up to the plate.
I realise that the situation - involving as it does many human beings - is complicated. However these are the questions I would like to ask:
If a man has been touching women inappropriately for decades, why would a woman want to work for him if the only reason he’s not touching them inappropriately now is that it says in his contract that he must behave “professionally”?
If a man has made women at his companies feel undervalued and disrespected for decades, why should the women at his new company think that any respect he shows them is anything other than an act that he’s required to perform by his coach, his therapist and his employment agreement? The message seems to be, “I am learning to feel respect for women so please be patient while I work on it. It’s not easy.”
Much has been said about giving John Lasseter a “second chance.” But he is presumably being paid millions of dollars to receive that second chance. How much money are the employees at Skydance being paid to GIVE him that second chance?
If John Lasseter started his own company, then every employee would have been given the opportunity to choose whether or not to give him a second chance. But any Skydance employees who don’t want to give him a second chance have to stay and be uncomfortable or lose their jobs. Shouldn’t it be John Lasseter who has to lose HIS job if the employees don’t want to give him a second chance?
Skydance has revealed that no women received settlements from Pixar or Disney as a result of being harassed by John Lasseter. But given all the abuse that’s been heaped on women who have come forward to make accusations against powerful men, do we really think that no settlements means that there was no harassment or no hostile work environment? Are we supposed to feel comforted that women who feel that their careers were derailed by working for Lasseter DIDN’T receive money?
I hope these queries make the level of my discomfort understandable. I regret having to step away because I love Alessandro so much and think he is an incredibly creative director. But I can only do what feels right during these difficult times of transition and collective consciousness raising.
I am well aware that centuries of entitlement to women’s bodies whether they like it or not is not going to change overnight. Or in a year. But I am also aware that if people who have spoken out - like me - do not take this sort of a stand then things are very unlikely to change at anything like the pace required to protect my daughter’s generation.
