  • Masterclass by Professor Sergio Azzolini in which they work on the fist movement of Weber's Concerto for bassoon and orchestra op 75. This masterclass took place at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid 2009.
    Student: Amber Mallee
    Accompanying pianist: Alina Artemyeva
Venue: Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Madrid (Spain) 16/04/2009
    C. M. von Weber: Bassoon Concerto in F major J 127 op 75 - I. Allegro ma non troppo
    Abstract:
In this fragment of the masterclass, Professor Azzolini mainly explains aspects about articulation, differences between legato and staccato (parlato, as he says). In both cases, sound should not change its quality - with tongue control and without changing the tone. Azzolini also makes some corrections on dynamics and sound balance, air and energy, among other issues related to the first movement from the Bassoon Concerto op 75 by C. M. von Weber.

I have been attracted to his playing for years. But I could not think it was applied to my playing for a long time. However, this resonates with me very much. He is explaining that the basic bassoon technique(tonguing, legato, dynamics, etc.) is defined by music itself, (coming from energy of music?, if you like). What a simple demonstration of musicianship!

It suppose that the orchestra won't play loud, to match with the soloist. Why the orchestras play loud?
