  • Black History Month is a time to honour Black Canadians and their communities. But we often don’t hear about the experiences of those of the Afro-Indigenous community. The CBC's Angela Sterritt spoke to three Black Indigenous women about the intertwining of their identities and what this month means to them.

I was told that members of my father’s family escaped the Antebellum South and wound up in Canada. I am not sure where they went but somewhere up North, I have family.

Some AA went to Nova Scotia, Canada. You should research it. However, many AA that went north, returned to America after things settled down.

They all could take DNA tests to find earlier African Ancestors. A Mitochondrial, Y Chromosomal and Autosomal tests could reveal haplogroups, ethnicities, and modern relatives from the Continent of Africa.

I’m not certain about Canada, but there’s records that show Natives owned AA slayes. Comedian Chris Rock’s ancestors were one of them. This was discovered when he traced his ancestors.

Unless this lady is enrolled or eligible for enrollment into the "Choctaw Nation" I'm not understanding her point.

Most Blacks are Native American. We are indigenous this to this land. Black people were or Africans were here before the flood.

No, my family thought the same thing but a dna test will surprise you (we have indigenous ancestry from being Hispanic though but my mom thought her dad was Native American) Most African Americans are more likely to have European than anything.

It is our right to self expression and it is against the law to discriminate based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age, or mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, residency, marital status or citizenship. And the Constitution recognizes the rights of Aboriginal Peoples of Canada to protect their culture, customs, traditions and languages.
