  • Animal Well Part 5 - prepare for an episode filled with a ton of progress. I lock in and solve a lot of puzzles, even something that may appear to be the end of the game, but I assure you, the end is never the end.

      @@mw2zorzest I think that they probably could have eliminated the possibility of the player not noticing by putting some of the little dudes that require the lantern to pass through into the active section of the boss. That way when the player pulls the lantern out to pass through they can notice the boss reacting as well.

    I absolutely love your hatred of trying new items. Like so many times its 100x times easier to use something different but you stick to only your disc. Its such a unique playthrough.

      And then just... Not even trying other options. The yoyo... He hasn't gotten the top yet, oh my gods. The top might be his go-to for breaking spikes below, but I honestly really hope it ends up being the hamster wheel. Could be the ball as well? That'd be VERY funny.
      I'm sure he'll figure this all out eventually. One of these days he'll realize that the disc isn't the only item in the game. Has to.

    Gotta remember that not every game with puzzles is a "puzzle game."
    This is a metriodvania with a heavy emphasis on exploration and puzzles, just with no traditional combat. The enemy interaction is being "forced" because it's just a part of that genre.

    Didn't want to spoil it previously since you were gunning for the 1st ending, but dark rooms can be mapped with either the firecracker or the lantern. Though keep in mind only visible sections will show up on the map just like before.

    I see a lot of people pointing out that Tyler didn’t use the lantern to scare the boss away. To be fair to him, I think the game could’ve signaled better that he could do this 😅
    Up to this point, every time the player encounters a boss, they need to either avoid it or trick it into harming itself. This sort of conditions the player into running away first when encountering a new boss, because usually they have no option to directly fight back.
    This boss breaks that pattern - the lantern and firecrackers both can be used against the boss. However, when the player encounters the boss, the player probably hasn’t used firecrackers in a while (especially not against bosses), and the game doesn’t give much indication that the lantern can scare the boss away - only that it can get rid of the ghost wall things. They may not immediately make the connection that either item is useful unless they decide to try it on a whim or happen to be using it when the boss spawns.
    Without this connection, the player will resort to instincts first upon encountering the boss. That instinct will be to avoid it, like what they did with the other bosses. This results in an intense chase that leaves the player no time to think, just move and react - and there is a lot to react to, which can feel overwhelming and require the player’s full focus!
    However, if the player makes good progress each time they try, they may assume that the level is meant to be played in this difficult, reactionary way. This in turn leads the player to grind out the reactionary style, and ultimately be unlikely to consider the firecrackers and lantern. The only chance they try it now is if they hit a brick wall in progress, and try shifting tactics to find something easier.
    I think this weakness could’ve been better signaled to reduce the chances of this situation happening. How to best do that, though, I’m not sure - maybe there’s an area that’s only accessible by lantern in the boss chase, or the rooms with the smaller versions of the boss could require the use of the lantern instead of just allowing the player to run through, helping signal that the boss has the same weakness. That would be up to the developer to decide in the end.

      Tbh I think the best way to signal that the lantern scares away the manticore is by the making the map loop around to the main area with the smaller shadow dudes and show that it scares away those guys, because from watching this playthrough I notice they don’t do that.
      Pretty sure I noticed the lantern scaring away the manticore because up to that point of the game, I was annoyed on not having my own source of light, so I just have that thang on me all the time when I got it lol

      just make it so that your first encounter requires holding the lantern, like the room entry requires to go through the shadow walls, dont give the player a reason to switch out until seeing the boss reaction to lantern (which i assume should be obvious, i dont know what it looks like)

      I'll preface my comment by saying I haven't played the game, but to me it seemed pretty obvious that anything made of shadow dislikes the light, and so the boss would be scared by the lantern (or at least his mini-me's in the other room)

      the connections you need to realize you need to use the lantern are much stronger than you all are making it out to be.
      The two things you need to know are 1. lantern hurts ghosts and 2. that thing looks like a ghost
      from that you can conclude the lantern should hurt that thing or at least affect it somehow. The specifics can be guessed after you use the lamp on it.

      it's much easier to realize when you're not the one inputting the movements :P You either focus on yourself or the enemy, being able to easily focus on both at the same time and note the similarities is a luxury only a viewer is afforded

      I figured it out pretty quickly when I saw the rat-thing stop and start moving at seemingly random moments, but in fairness I'm a lot more familiar with platformers that use this sort of "Cosmic Clone" behavior. Tyler is someone who mainly plays puzzle games so he's probably not as familiar with distinguishing "complicated AI" versus "just copies the player's movements with a delay"

      @@White__Ink No, what I'm saying is, initially, the game makes you think the Mock Disc is just a decoy, since you swap it out with the flying disc. But the fact that it also opens a gate makes you think about whether or not it's really a decoy. Maybe the throwing disc was the real decoy.
      Just something to think about on the lore side of things.

      ​@@White__Ink The idea is that the Mock Disc at the start is simply something you use to replace the "real disc" that you can use as an item. (Mock being a synonym for a replica.) However, later you need the Mock Disc to get the flame, but you cannot simply use your real disc. Meaning that the "Mock" Disc might have been the real deal all along.

    This is one of the most entertaining play throughs of a metroid vania. The fact that the game can be approached from so many directions and still yield a solution makes it truly outstanding.
    It's like a mix of metroid vania with puzzle and immersive sim all in one.

    17:06 it seems that what is happening when you fall and not take spike damage is that your entering the spike from the side rather than the top. It may be that the spike damage checks for the direction you touch the spike to determine if it should damage you and set you back.

    It's truly a testament to the flexibility of this game's design that you managed to reach the credits while stubbornly refusing to do any experimentation with your various tools.     The latern is propermy signaled, only Tyler missed it. The small shadow monsters that smack you right before finding the lantern are also spooked by it. The path to the Manticore could've been set up better so that he HAD to pass by those small monsters and msde the connection more easily, but it was the first thing I thought when I found the Manticore. "I'm in lantern country right now, lets see how the lantern can help me"

    it truly amazes me how long it took you to realise that the mouse enemy mimics your movement or the fact that you still hadn't discovered all the obvious stuff you can do with your current items, like PLEASE experiment more with them!!!!
    use your items on random terrain, enemies, stuff, play the flute anywhere and etc. 🙏

    Enjoying this playthrough a lot, and I hope it gets traction enough that you keep going. I very much agree that putting intense reactive elements in an exploratory puzzle game is a questionable game design choice. But I still think it's a very good game overall.

    The game:
    Gives you firecrackers as your first weapon, puts some in the final boss arena
    Gives you lantern as another weapon, makes you use it a lot before
    BiggusBrainus:
    Doesn't use firecrackers until dying a few times
    Doesn't use lantern at all
    Perhaps we do need yellow paint.

    6:48 you can do the same thing but with an easier setup if you land on the lilypad 1 screen to the right. just jump and disc

    Fun fact: you can hit the 4 buttons without the ostrich. Put the slinky on the left, y yourself on the right of the trapdoors and activate the trapdoors with the yo-yo.
    That way you can save the ostrich and get the flame!

    I know everyone is harping on certain things and part of me wants to agree but during my playthrough there was a lot that I didn't learn until much later! Everyone gets to go through the game their own way and I really enjoy that!
    Also Tyler I know you don't like parts that require "execution" but that did make for a great finale to the main game!

    Hitboxes. Thats what caused the spikes not to damage you because you didn't hit the pointy end

      Well, more specifically, it's probably directional hitboxes that check which direction you're going in when inside the hitbox. Tyler just barely got in from the side of the spike instead of from the top side, as far as I can tell, which was why he didn't get damaged.

    An ostrich is trapped running in a wheel and your objective to get it out of your way is to drown and eliminate it in the wheel so it can’t escape
    That’s kinda messed up

    11:10 funfact you can solve that room jsut with yourself and the jojo
    trigger green button then fall down on the right siode wall pressing 2 buttons with your body
    while also throwing the jojo too the left hitting the other 2

    I’m really upset I spent hours trying to figure one how to get past not realizing it was asking me for a mock disk, I got 32 eggs before I could figure out how to get past that room and to the flame and as soon as you mock disk I slapped my face and realized.
