Hearing this as a 32 year old man still brings me so much nostalgia. I remember being little and playing with dinosaurs and then my mom came into the room excited to show me what she had for me, my mom would always do her absolute best to try to make me happy and surprise me with little things here and there. She then showed me the box for this film. Immediately I got excited seeing the dinosaurs. I grabbed my two favorite toys and ran to sit on the couch as she put the movie in to the VCR. She turned and smiled at me and put a blanket on me. As I watched the movie she was making me food. The movie was going great until “THE Scene” that was my earliest memory of feeling grief, heartbreak, sadness over the loss of a parent. My mom came back to the living room and saw that I was sad, she immediately put the food down and simply gave me a hug. She didn’t ridicule me or tell me to stop being sad. She just held me and let me know that she wasn’t going anywhere and she would always be with me. To this day that will always be one of my absolute favorite memories. I love you so much mom. I’ll never be able to put into words how grateful I am for everything.

The difference between Littlefoot's mother, Mufasa, and Bambi's mother is we don't even see what happens to Bambi's mother, Mufasa is just limp and unresponsive so it's sad, yeah, but Littlefoot's mom endures a courageous battle and dies right in front of him while comforting him. And then he goes on to mistake his own shadow for her. That's soooo much harder.

I feel the same. I think it stirs up some strooooonng emotional memories when were kids in the 1990’s mixed with nostalgia. The loss of a parental figure when you’re really young (or the vicarious loss through film or a really engrossing story) hits much harder when you still need them much more than when we’re now in this independent stage of our lives. Mixing those two strong emotions together, decades old sadness and nostalgia combines into an overwhelming feeling of loss for a time we’ll never live through again (unless reincarnation’s a thing..) It’s also an objectively incredible score.
In all seriousness though, spend as much time with your parents as you can. We’re only on this planet for such a short period of time.

@@jarlwhiterun7478 True and the fact that when i first saw the movie i never experienced death in my life.
When you're young you feel immortal and you want to believe that everyone you love will live forever.
I'm 33 years old now, i lost all my grandparents and my own parents are getting older and aren't nearly as fit as they were back when i was young.
Seeing the scene with littlefoot's mom combined with the music and the reality of death makes this movie hit on a whole different level.

For one, the scene where Little Foot's mother passes on is heart-rending. Then the music itself is so powerfully evocative that it could move one to tears without the story. And finally, for me, I'm not just hit with memories of the movie, but memories from my little world as it was when I watched the movie. Intense nostalgia. It's been 20+ years since I have seen this movie, and within 5 seconds of the song I got the biggest rush of nostalgia I think I've ever felt. I remember watching this with my mom when I was about 5-6 years old and just crying my eyes out for most of the movie. Every kid should watch this masterpiece of a movie. That being said, I'm kind of afraid of watching this movie again. I can't even get through this score without crying, and I'm not talking about a single tear down the cheek.

Every kid has a special bond with his mother, so this movie will definitely tug at the heart strings of anybody who watches it, kids included. Of course the music makes it even sadder. Only recently did I watch this movie again for the first time in about 20 years with my 3 year old niece, and holy cow it is even sadder than I remember. Not just the mother's death scene but they really drag it out with this sad music and the mother being with Littlefoot on his journey throughout. There's always that constant reminder that his mother is not with him anymore.
Probably the saddest moment in any animation movie ever. They wouldn't dare make a movie like this today. It's too deep and slightly depressing throughout. But great.

i wouldnt say drag it out, but overall production was so good that it really makes you feel. When someone can write a piece of music and it touches you to the core to where you feel exactly how the scene makes you feel, that's when they've hit it right on the nail.

    Hey James,
I wanted to say thank you for all these wonderful scores. You helped me through a lot of my own dark depression, and still do sometimes. Your scores for 'A Beautiful Mind', 'Avatar', 'Bicenntenial Man', 'Titanic', and heck, even 'The Amazing Spider Man' really did a number on me. But none so wrenching as this track, this single track, that brings back years and years of long forgotten childhood. A time and place, and a sound, where I realized what death meant.
It's only now with your passing, and this song that shows your own understanding of mourning, that I truly do appreciate the time we are given. Thanks, James. Thank you. I hope you're in a Great Valley of your own, for you have surely left a Great Valley in the hearts of many. Rest in peace; you've deserved it.

the mothers in my family always tack this bit on when they pray: give me life until my children know how to defend themselves.
this movie always makes me cry and it opened my eyes a little of the life of those who have lost mothers when young

Someday, whenever that day will be, I'll have children of my own. And like my own parents who blessed me with growing up with this movie, sparking my imagination and wonder in things beyond our own world, my children will also see this film. While my own childhood is gone, never to return, and only to remember, seeing my children's eyes widen and sparkle while watching this movie will fill me with such joy, that I know I'll be able to relive my childhood with them, if only for a short while.

Very sad to hear of Mr Horner's death. He was one of my favourite composers. The world has just lost another great artist.

GOD right in the childhood, the feels of this vid just kills me, my heart is getting wrenched into pieces lol in a good way. Why am I so happy, yet so sad? I guess the nostalgia is just that overwhelming, i'm so happy that I got to remember such a happy part of my childhood, but sad that its over you know? I guess we all feel that way if were LBT kids, I love majority of the movies but the first will always be my favorite, just the style it had and oh god, little foots mom scene, too much feels
