Buring books and libraries always makes me feel we lost so much of history. The only fraction of Human existence captured in writing, gets even smaller
Yeah, I shudder when I imagine how much human history has been lost to humid environments decaying paper books or simply oral histories passing out of memory.
I bet the fires are all started civilization-building aliens to cover their omni-present tracks. I mean what are the chances that there'd be several instances of things being burned, information things, all across the globe through out many centuries? Almost every human invention, ancient to modern day, is secretly the doing of time-travel alien angels. Our only genuine achievement is making so many varieties of flavored Oreos.
The knowledge that just rolls off the top of head is impressive and I liked this format while you’re transitioning. Thanks for the great content!💚
Glad you enjoyed it! It's great to hear positive feedback because I was very nervous doing a content change 😅
@@CogitoEdu I enjoyed this format, as well.
Didn't comment on this initially, but wanted to indicate I loved it! Knew some, learned some, and the vibe was great.
Awesome, thank you!
I loved this video format. You animated ones are cool, but this was really neat.
Amazing, this is nice to hear! The animated videos will always be the bread and butter of the channel. But it's nice to know that people enjoy other stuff.
The way you described the English History Education sounds really similar to Australian History Education, which is basically, "There was the Dreamtime, then Captain Hook came to Australia and then there was the world wars."
No Emu War? ☺️
American History is very much the same. The world started and then there was the Revolution (there was only one, ever), and only bad, unpatriotic people didn't rebel, because everyone agreed that the King was awful. And from then on, everyone knew the US was the Best.
Is Australia actually Neverland? (You mean Captain Cook and you should feel embarrassed that you exist).
Same with the US and Canada. None of these countries want to confront their mistreatment of the nations they harmed, in part because they are still greatly benefiting from it.
US education may mention indigenous people being mistreated; it will not characterize it as genocide though, which it was. It will discuss slavery and the mistreatment of the descendants of those slaves, but treats this as an unfortunate thing that happened long ago, not something that's still harming millions of people through its consequences.
It certainly doesn't discuss the US' unparalleled affinity for installing murderous dictators in other countries, or its penchant for killing civilians en masse in its wars or through its foreign policy. American imperialism is not part of the curriculum, but for a lot of the world it has been a fact of life.
I think you make a good point and yes there is still a lot of Eurocentric or British focus of Australian history. But Australian History does teach a lot of ancient, medieval and modern history from across the world and you HAVE to cover at least one Asian country in ancient/medieval as well as European... whilst still doing Civil rights in US and Australia and World Wars. Sooo there is not too much wiggle room to do more Aussie history unless you risk being ignorant of the rest of the world and global ancient and modern cultures! Would hate to be like US or England and only learn about patriotic, national stuff
I like the inclusion of the Polish-Haitian connection and Kościuszko! There's actually a bit of controversy about how many of the Legionaries joined the Haitians, but that might have something to do with the handful of officers who came back to Europe and continued to fight for Napoleon (like Kazimierz Lux, who also was a pirate for a bit) minimalizing the whole thing. History with Hilbert made a good video about this whole subject.
Kościuszko is pronounced something like "Kosh-chioosh-koh," with the first "sh" and "ch" sounds being soft, kinda like in Japanese. BTW, he was born in the Lithuanian part of the Commonwealth (in what is now Belarus) and many Lithuanias and Belarusians also considered him their hero.
shame that Poles are pretty racist now.
Australia’s highest mountain was named after Kosciuszko, named Mount Kosciuszko (previously spelled Kosciusko, and pronounced as Kozzy-oss-ko). It was named by a Polish explorer Pavel Strzelecki because of it’s resemblance to Kościuszko Mound in Krakow, Poland. I like hearing about what a top bloke Kościuszko was. It’s sort of fitting to name the highest mountain after such a giant of history.
23:40 a lot of these pattern recognition things & conspiracies, as said here, do rely on people not as much being confused with history alone but also with confusion surrounding the basics of other fields. You often see this with geology, or broadly physics etc.
Yeah I tend to see the obsession and proliferation of conspiracies as a systemic educational failure than some sort of personal failure. If people do not have the information or tools to combat disinformation than you can hardly blame them for falling for that kind of stuff. There's a reason it's usually pre-history or pre-Columbian history that has so many conspiracies attached to it, they're some of the least taught history.
The fact that Ireland was/is colonized for so long and held so much of their culture should be applauded. Y'all can be friend with the rest of us victims of Colonization
Ireland's housing crisis is that bad huh? My mans moved to Uruguay
.....too true, it hurts.
About Indian Ocean interconnectivity in the past: It is a Legendary account first documented by the Spanish but according to tradition the Hindu Rajahnate of Cebu in the modern day Philippines was founded by a prince descended from the royal family of the Tamil Chola maritime empire. Specifically through their influence over Sumatra.
Still getting used to seeing an actual human attached to that voice.
Feels like he's voicing over himself in real time.
It's a deepfake

What you mention at 16:25 actually did happen - under the first Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, a massive campaign of destruction of written scholarship was conducted. He kept copies at his capital...which was later burned down during the succession crisis that followed his death. We don't have copies of a lot of the Confucian classics as a result of this.
yea 焚書坑儒. Qin was such a bad 15 years in Chinese history.
"oops" x 10x1000 = global ouch
Pyramids are a highly advanced pile of stuff.
Loved this :) I really like getting to hear about those interesting little stories about a person or small group in history that I was never exposed to in the US. Also it's crazy how much you know about every name, group and even each image you saw, great channel
Yeah my favourite part of history is learning about all those little stories too! Every country usually only teaches the stuff from their country when there are thousands of fascinating stories to learn about.
9:20 There is also a lot of graffiti in Pompeii written by various people that mostly consists of taunts, recommendations for various goods and services and "I was here"-type things.
"Fire doesn't really do as much damage as apathy."
Based.
Word. (old school)
Lovely to see the story of Leftraro!
Mapuche's "totem" is called "Rehue", they designate worship places (such as cemeteries, but also others), the name of the "shaman" is "Machi".
Fucking love this holy shit! And it's great you caught that the "Indonesian" pyramid was actually in Cambodia
So glad to hear that, I was nervous at how this would be received so your feedback is really nice to hear :D
~15:09 he also keeps referring to "Mesoamerica" while referencing examples that are decidedly not Mesoamerican, namely Andean stoneworking and Amazonian cities (Mesoamerica and South America are entirely separate regions)
That whole video sucks man how the heck did they have knowledge from before ancient Egypt
@@hiddenhist Wisdom of the ancients maaaaaaaan *hits bong*
The book burning almost made me cry. Love this video. I giggled about the graffiti. You tell stories very well.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah book burning is a special crime against history 😥
love that format, you really need to do more of these, or a podcast or something like that. It's fun to learn some small bits of knowledge about little things
Loved it! Hope to see more
Your general knowledge is fantastic!! I'd love to see more of these
Cogito hath falleneth in the darketh rabbitholeth of reaction channeleth.
Edit:- Ok, I take that back, he's putting in too much effort.
Best react video I have seen ever full stop. Great content even if it isnt your usual ultra polished animations. Honestly would love to make this a series alongside your normal content.
Love this format.
Did a great job Cogito, love your usual content and this one thank you!
Love this format!
Different from the usual but I loved it!! 👏👏👏 more please!!
I do miss the cute animations, but this video was great! Really interesting and enjoyable and I'd be happy to see more like this. Keep it up and good luck settling in to your new home!
Thank you. I'm settling in fast and so the next video should be out pretty quickly. I've got some really exciting projects lined up for 2023 :D
@@CogitoEdu Awesome, I can't wait! I hope Uruguay treats you well.
I THOUGHT YOU STOPPED MAKING CONTENT T.T
I'm SO GLAD YOU'RE MAKING STUFF STILL.
If you thought your abscence went unnoticed, it did not, and I hope I can speak for the rest of the subs when we say that we're glad you didn't stop haha.
Love you doing new formats, your voice can make anything entertaining.
Great Stuff!
I never wanted this video to end! Seriously I came away from it with like 6 topics I'm now going to independently research. Thank you!! Please make more!
I love this video! Wishing you a happy and healthy life in your new country :)
This was great. Keep it up :)
The description of English history was hilarious! As a Jew, describing hitler as “ooh he was mad. Then they killed Hitler” had me belly laugh 😂
Great video!
Ok, I know this video is 4 months old, but I hope you do more like these. I really enjoyed this format of either confirming and adding context or debunking the bullshit. Like others have said, if you do a specific one just to debunk, that would be awesome, too! Thanks for the great content!
This was great! Thank you. So happy I subscribed to this channel.
I'm happy you're subscribed too!
amazing video , watched it fully waiting for more
Thank you so much 👍
@@CogitoEdu : D
I remember reading somewhere, that some of the the Mesoamericans that "converted" to Christianity and learned to read and write the European languages would hide bits of their culture in the books they transcribed and stuff? Like stealthy footnotes, but I could never find anything more about it.
Also just a note, the guy seems to be conflating Mesoamerican with South America... South America is not Mesoamerican.
I like this is as a series. You're a likeable guy and it was an easy watch for me. Love your channel in general. Great interesting topics and great animation
uruguay? nice
Brilliant video... I thought you'd react to loads and not really go into much detail, as most reactions on yt are just ''haha, yes that's funny" but nah this was an excellent video man.. love to see more of this type of thing
Loved this video, but something I reacted to which wasn't brought up is that the Maya built their cities in the Yucatan rainforest, not the Amazon
Yeah the guy was combining every pre-Columbian civilisation and calling it Mesoamerica. He also showed Inca architecture, it was a mess.
I thought I knew so much about history I practically knew everything… this video has me humbled bro😂😂
Honestly history is so vast it's impossible to know everything. Even the most trained and well read historians barely know 0.1%.
@@CogitoEdu I guess that's true, what I found from this video is that my knowledge of pre 1800 Americans is like non existent, I only know the basic stuff Mayas were good at astronomy, olmec built weird statues etc.
But this video inspired me to learn more about these cultures , I hope you do more like this vid, your knowledge is inspiring 👍
Yeah I was the same up until a few years ago. I knew next to nothing about the pre-Columbian Americas other than a few references in movies, bad documentaries, and Age of Empires 😅. But learning about these cultures has probably taught me more about history than anything else I dived into. There's so much undiscussed yet fascinating stuff there.
We need more of these, please. Thx
Sad how few views, love your channel!
Nice video Cogito! Go raibh math agat!
Watching this video made me think of a potential Cogito video about Gobekli Tepe, I would really like that video. I've searched youtube before and don't recall there being many good videos about it.
Goodluck in Uruguay.
Thank you!
I love your videos but not gunna lie, my favorite thing is hearing you say the word thousand. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the great content. I usually don't watch reaction videos, but yours is gold. I would love to see you do some more debunking of ancient alien theories.
Thanks for giving us a lower-effort filler video while you try to get yourself set up to do animations again. :3
It was fun. Though man some of those tiktoks were hard too listen too because they were way too fast.
Glad you enjoyed it! I've got some really exciting projects lined up for 2023!
Tlahuicole sounds like he was either Huitzilopochtli's chosen warrior or actually was Huitzilopochtli with amnesia
Yes more of this!!
I enjoyed this video very much and seeing your face! I think there should be more videos like this one
Happy to hear you liked it. This was really fun to do!
@@CogitoEdu omg you replied! Yup to be honest all your videos are constitently high quality with a lot of thought and care.
Even without your equipment and drawings, I think you still have that core knowledge, charisma and research that sets you apart from others.
When doing new types of videos I think you know what your fans like and expect so we have total faith in the quality of content. Hope the move and new country goes well! How exciting.
Would definitely watch more of these.
~ 5:00 Some called autistic children "changelings". I hope they were not mistreated because of that.
There is a fascinating paper written about this that I mentioned while recording but I did a bad job explaining it and cut it. It could be a whole video.
This video was so much fun - I cracked up XD
Dude! I’ve always liked your videos but you just won me over forever when you said all these historical conspiracy theories involving aliens or Atlantis or whatever are boring. I do not know why it never occurred to me to Xpress it like that but yes, that is exactly right. It is like cheating, like “history is way too interesting and exciting so I am just going to attribute everything to aliens. Or possibly druids. Or alien druids..” good job! Hello Hammer, meet my friend, Mr. nail
Thank you, glad I'm not the only one that finds those theories so boring and unimaginative. The Olmecs are fascinating enough without having to add aliens into the mix.
@@CogitoEdu I have always always always been irritated at the inherent racism of those kinds of things. “Certainly Africans and American Indians couldn’t have developed stacking-rocks-on-top-of-each-other technology without outside help.” And I kind of left it there, but you hit the magic combination of words to make me realize that, yeah, their conspiracy theories are really bland and uninteresting. So now I’m thinking, “you know guys, even if aliens DID come and blah blah blah, you would still find a way to make it seem boring.”
Here’s an ancient saying that I just invented: “If your paranoid delusions are less interesting than the truth, then you’re doing it wrong.” :)
I'm curious about why you moved Uruguay?
My wife is Uruguayan and I've always liked it here.
I like this. I would like to see something like this again 😊
Bro you should do a seperate vidoe about the meso-American and Aztec societies it’s super interesting their language was like an advanced form of Egyptian hieroglyphs in that some symbols represented sounds. And personally the fact that dozens if not hundreds of their manuscripts were burned to me is one of the biggest tragedies in human history, super interesting stuff all the same
Uruguay?? So.... welcome!!! Be prepare to be asked "why Uruguay?" a lot and to drink some mate 🧉
Ha, I've visited Uruguay at least once a year for the last 8ish years, I really love it here.
This is fun
I know that you planned this as a stop gap but this is really entertaining stuff, you're good at this.
Good to know that you enjoyed the change in style. It was nice to go easy-ish on a video for once 😂
I personally love this new style of videos! It would be great if you make more videos like this in the future.
Awesome, that's nice to know. I'll always keep doing and improving the main videos, but knowing I can take a break every now and then is very reassuring.
I watched on Nebula but just wanted to come here to say that I nearly didn't watch this video (despite having watched all your previous vids), cos I've never used tiktok and don't usually watch 'reaction videos', so I wasn't sure I'd find the video interesting. But it was SO much more than whatever I expected, or than just 'reactions'. I'll definitely watch more videos in this format, if you choose to make them :)
So glad to hear you enjoyed it. I really enjoyed making it even though I also don't like reaction videos. But when used as jumping off points for explaining further context I think it might actually be a useful style of video.
This is one knowledgeable dude.
This was different...and fun!
Pls do more of this❤❤
Heeeey, welcome to this part of the world
That was fun.
i was skeptical while i see this 50 mins long video, now that i finished watching it, i am glad that i did
i love this content. it's nice to see the face behind (in front of?) the voice.
I'm reading a book of Irish fairy and folk tales, so I really loved the explanation of Irish fairies in the first part.
Something else to note about burial items is that just because somebody is buried with something, whether that be a bow or a sword, that does not automatically make them a hunter or a warrior.
We often have very little information on the cultures and traditions of these people and so we don't actually know why they bury people with what they do. For all we know it could be religious or it could be a status symbol or it could mean anything really.
Thnk u my brother for your interest in the Maya and Aztecs and other native peoples. Excellent!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
do more of this, maybe on a spearate channel as this might affect your current channel, but it was so interesting 😭
Class channel man just subscribed - which part of Ireland are you from?
My dad has seen rings of mushrooms before while exploring in our local field mostly used for flying aircrafts and RC airplanes. I don't even live in Ireland😅
This video is fantastic! Loved it!! Another note on the hunter/gatherer concept, there’s an idea going around that many of the hunters would have possibly had ADHD because of the ability to hyper focus, ignore body cues like hunger and elimination, and excellent hand eye coordination. As someone with ADHD, I see the plausibility of the idea. Gathering would be super boring and I’d do a crappy job of it. Not enough movement or action to it.
This was fun! Thanks
It's really disappointing that the sheer horror and atrociousness of the destruction of the Americas is not emphasized in school.
"actually they have to worry about the priests"
Dropped my phone in water hearing that one
Thank you so much for the amazing and informative videos you make. They are great and makes learning so much fun. I would really love to see one about Christianity. And of course about Candomblé Ketu, Candomblé Bantu and Candomblé Djedje. And one about the Greek Gods, the Norse Gods and the Egyptian Gods. Thanks again! Keep up the good work.
This might be the most educational video you made. And that is saying something because all of your videos are educational.
it is pronounced 'Kosh-choo-shko'. He was predominantly a brilliant military engineer. There was also the other Polish guy Kazimierz Pułaski who fought for independence of United States. As in the Pulaski Parade in NYC.
You said earlier you were now in Uruguay. There is a large Polish community in south of Brazil, in Curitiba region. They even brought some Polish food there and made it a regional food of Brazil :D
Wait is this the first time I’m seeing my favourite educational channels face?
Someone was arguing on twitter that "oh the spanish conquest was justified because aztec evil sacrifice!", and under a related post I mentioned that "if these people were asked anything about Tenochtitlan they'd be like 'whats that'" or something along those lines.
and this person responded with like a facebook meme about aztec sacrifice. the meme featured a picture of - I shit you not - Chichen Itza. Which is, very famously, NOT an Aztec structure, it's a Mayan one.
Okay, this is so weird, because I just ran into the fae because they showed up in a DnD series I watch. I just learned about all of this less than a few days ago lol.
Could use another one of these. It was great and there is no shortage of terrible history takes on tic tok.
Just to let you know. The painting about the painting with the three doors is about the dinner with jesus.
Tons of Chinese history and philosophy WAS burned at the conclusion of the Warring States period.
In terms of historiography there were many competing philosophies known collectively as the “Hundred Schools of Thought” which flourished during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods but which were purged under the Qin.
Mad at the qin now
People thinking it's weird that different cultures figured out pyramids is like thinking it's weird that different cultures figured out making fire, or sticking a seed into the ground, or eating food, or using your feet to walk instead of your hands, or breathing air.
Could you a series where you start with a tictock then do a deep dive on the subject? Just one tictock per video so you can have alot of relevant jucy knowledge.
Olá hermano! Gracias de Brasil
thanks for the advise, i will have to cancel the wedding with my cousin now. she is going to be so disappointed
