Subhankar Banerjee’s eclectic style of tabla is the result of permanently open ears. His mother Kajalrekha was a singer-composer, who started him on tabla aged four and supported him in his musical journey. He trained in the Benares gharana under Manik Das before an extended apprenticeship in the Farukhabad gharana under Swapan Shiva (“his ruthlessly frank criticism, that too during live stage concerts, hurt me; but compelled to see the finer nuances…”).
His expansive rhythmic imagination has led to a range of top accompaniment slots, as well as performances with the London Symphony Orchestra and jazz masters including John McLaughlin. He has also played for Hollywood films, and performed at the Nobel peace Prize ceremony. For him music is a direct endeavour, expressing one’s life force through sound (“it starts with an endless passion for music, for awake, for discovery, for people, for life…”). Arjun Kumar was born into a family of mridangam artists, and upholds their renowned style on the instrument today. He trained under his father Sri Arjunan as well as TAS Mani and Umayalpuram K Sivaraman, and became one of All India Radio’s youngest top-graded artists. Known for an energetic style, he has accompanied a range of top Carnatic and Hindustani artists.

I've met Sri Arjun Kumar in person. Have been to his house and even got to play myself a bit in front of him.... Great guy. Proud to say he played for my mother in concerts back in the 90s.

Sadly, Pandit Subhankar Banerjee is no more. We lost him because of Covid 19. Let's work together to stop this disease from taking such lives. This disease also took away Pandit Rajan Misra.
We will all miss him very much.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
