      @@15Candles That was the year Tommy Lee Jones got best supporting actor for “The Fugitive.” Granted, Jones is a durable actor - but to win for that performance? It was perfectly acceptable but in no way extraordinary enough for an Oscar. Ralph Fiennes was simply incredible. Frightening and evil, he really exemplified how awful the Nazis were and the terror his victims must have felt. I thought it one of the best in years. Jones beat that - for the record, he also beat young Leonardo DiCaprio’s head-shakingly magnificence work in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Pete Postlethwaite’s fine performance in “In the Name of the Father,” and John Malkovitch’s memorable performance, in “In the Line of Fire.” Each of these performances was better than Jones, but I suppose they gave it to him bcz he was the best known of the nominees. Other than Malkovitch, the others weren’t particularly familiar to Oscar voters. That’s no excuse - Fiennes deserved it. I mean, Daniel Day Lewis wasn’t exactly a household name when he (deservedly) won in 1989 - but he had one thing going for him - there was a split vote between Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. The Oscars are pretty much a sham. Apparently, they hate films about gay cowboys (“The Power of the Dog,” and “Brokeback Mountain” lost to clearly inferior films), are not too keen on films about aliens or sci-fi (“E.T.” “Alien,” “Dune,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” - just for starters). Sure, these films clean up in the technical awards, but that is about it. One of the most mind boggling things about the Oscars was the year “The Color Purple” was completely ignored - 11 Oscar noms in all, I believe, and nary a win. Instead, the dull “Out of Africa,” prevailed. I think it was the Oscar’s way of slapping Spielberg for daring to make a “serious” movie, when he was mostly known for sci fi & action/adventure films. I feel ‘The Color Purple” was one of the best film of the 1980s, and for it to be completely snubbed was unacceptable. Spielberg is clearly one of the best directors ever. Screw what the Oscars think. Sorry for the long rant…

    I'm so happy that she won! Watching her go from ensemble in Hamilton to Alyssa in The Prom to winning an Oscar for playing the absolute icon that is Anita from West Side Story in only 5 years is absolutely crazy. The first openly queer woman of color to win!! Yesss!!
    Honestly, I have to appreciate Aunjanue Ellis' performance in King Richard as well. If Ariana didn't win, I would've wanted it to be her. There's a scene in King Richard where Brandy is fighting with Richard and the camera is on her for a second and there's a look of just pure hurt on her face. That look alone brought me to tears. Great job to everyone!!

    Ariana REALLY Made History when She won;
    She's second Latin/Afro Latina Woman to win.
    First Woman to win for a film directed by Steven Spielberg.
    Third time someone won for portraying a character who was played by won previously (and first time it's a Female Character)
    First LGBT Performer to win.

      Ok, let's get some things STRAIGHT here. ARIANA, has not "shown" any VISIBLE proof of her LATIN side (yet), so let's just call her a WOMAN OF COLOR for now ok. Yes, there has been a "real" AFRO-LATINA who won an Oscar, and her name is IRENE CARA, back in 1984 for BEST ORIGINAL SONG for the movie FLASHDANCE. Also another "real" AFRO-LATINA who was nominated for BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS in 1993 for the movie FEARLESS and her name is ROSIE PEREZ.

      @@julkasteven8198 Oh yeah, I knew what u meant. It's just that MISS ARIANA keeps going around "labeling" herself as an AFRO-LATINA, but when u search the internet, all u see is her WHITE mother, NO NAME or PIC of this PUERTO-RICAN father that she says she has. And my whole point is, just b'cuz someone "calls'' themselves something, that doesn't mean that's who they REALLY are. For all we know her dad could be a PAKISTAN INDIAN or BLACK AMERICAN man. Let's wait and see if she ever "reveals" this MYSTERIOUS father, before we start calling her the FIRST LATIN anything ok.

    • @shellyrews808
      @shellyrews808 Před rokem

      @@57yearoldjamesbond First of all, where did u read in my comments where I used the words she's "LYING"? I said she has not shown any "proof" of the PUERTO RICAN heritage that she "claims" to have. Secondly, when a person "chooses" to be FAMOUS, which this woman has done, you "automatically" make ur LIFE everybody's business, and (WE THE PUBLIC) have a "right" to say what we want about or question her and any other HOLLYWOOD celebrity. Lastly, the "real" ARGUMENT here is abt, LABELS and TITLES when it pertains to these AWARD shows. Who is she or anybody else for that matter, to go around calling her the FIRST LATIN something, and we don't even know if it's TRUE or NOT? Whoever she has as her P.R. reps, needs to be FIRED immediately, b'cuz they're doing a LOUSY job. Also, if ARIANA wants ppl to judge her on just her TALENTS, whenever she goes on these interviews or award shows, it would help if she HERSELF would stop mentioning her RACE and/or SEXUAL orientation, and just say, hey I'm an ACTRESS/DANCER and leave it at that, then maybe the rest of "US" won't talk abt it anymore either.
