This bin was made from cutting a 55 gallon food grade barrel in half long ways and screwing the open ends together to make a 6 foot long bin.

The bin lives in the cellar of my 200-year-old house. In the winter the furnace dries it out, and in the wet season the moisture leaching through the bricks makes the basement very humid. The current set up was started near the first of the year 2021 after the wormpocolypse. A rat was in the basement and all the bins had to be moved to totes and buckets with lids on to protect them. When the rat was ended, I added 4 or more of the in-progress bins/ buckets with the compost mix of red, blue and European nightcrawlers in them to fill the big blue bin. I continued to add ground leaves and food. Currently the bin is undergoing a refresh. I am harvesting the castings as the top of the bin dries and adding new bedding and food. Keeping the moisture even in the bin is difficult in the wet summer. I flip or fluff the bin to keep the air in the bedding. Back to the wedge method starting now.

Tinkerer for 25+ years, hard core for the last 4 years. That was cool to see how much you can harvest from Blue when you want to!! Loved the huge amount of leaves and food you put in...it will be fun to see how the worms transform that feeding on Blue's next check-in! Excellent video Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
It was nice to find a pile of leaves outside my door. Blue will make it into wonderful castings for me. Now that we are staying warm ish they are going to start breeding again. Those babies need a place to live. Hope the shoulder is progressing. 😃🪱👍🏼
@@PlantObsessed Thanks!
Nice big 20 gallon haul of mostly-finished materials - and watching Blue getting tended to is always fun! Yeah... I'm the one who has been seeing tiny snails in a couple of my systems. And I have no idea where they came from. Perhaps the were on some leaves, or something that I brought in from outside :)
I swear I thought all snails were aquatic. I guess it makes sense if slugs are a thing. Lol. I'll have to wear my reader when I do my weeding this year. 😁👍🏼🌱🪱
I just started my worm bin this month, so I brand new to worm farming life.
If you have a new bin don't feed like I do. It takes about 6 months to establish an ecosystem. Good luck. Ask any questions you want. I try and answer them all. 👍🏼🪱😃
Ive been a worm mom since 2021 ! I love feeding them and watching them : )
They are such good babies 🥰🪱👍🏼
Since 1989 just a couple bins at that point. Once I became disabled and had more time I now have 25 bins / systems. I also have expanded my garden by 4x.
I had to reduce my bins for a while. I'm down from 17 to 4. ANC video today 👍🏼🪱😄
I'm new to worm compost. I started in November 2023, I have a small shoebox that I will be harvesting and sifting March/April. Yay! I enjoy watching your channel. You have a huge bin 😮
It is the best to start small and scale up. 👍🏼🪱😃
@@PlantObsessed yes very true! Please check out my new CZcams channel with my small shoebox worm bin. I'm so excited to harvest & sift soon some castings.
Woh....that quite a feed. Big blue is gonna be happy along with the wormies.
I try and spoil them every once in a while. 😁👍🏼🪱
Hello Anne, I’ve been worming a little over a year. Working on my 55 gallon worm bin now.
They are great once you get them going. Patience is key in waiting for the first finished castings. Good luck.😁👍🏼🪱
Glad to see you back at it. I’m learning so much from you. ❤
Thank you I'm glad you are finding it helpful.🪱👍🏼😁
Hi Ann, I find those dry leaves with a dusting of mold go very quickly. How lucky to get a windfall this time of year! Good luck with your continued seed starting efforts.
~ Sandra
It was nice getting a new pile of autumn leaves in spring.👍🏼🪱😁
20+ years. Started because I was a composting maniac.
It is a good rabbit hole to go down. 🪱👍🏼😁
4 years 🎉
Good worms👍🏼🪱😁
Hi Anne!!!. I made Blue step brother!!! Im excited to see how it does... I love to see you videos
Excellent. Blue needs more relatives 💙😃👍🏼🪱
I've taken to saying "Good worms!" to my little livestock, too.
They are such good babies 🥰🪱👍🏼
Nice big harvest Ann. I just had a person ask me if I should of feed citrus to my worm bin. Hope the ginger grows well for you. Awesome worm ball, good worms. Great feeding and bedding 😮
I like the puréed eggshell, good idea Ann! 😁🪱
I learned it doesn't like full sun last year. I hope to get a massive harvest this year. Thank you for watching 😃🪱👍🏼
Im discovering about worms what I discovered about Bees so many years ago. We need them more than I ever considered. Thank you for this knowledge.
You are welcome. 👍🏼🪱😃
I have learned a lot of info from your channel such as combining the different types of worms in the same bin. I have blue and red wiggle worms in my compost heap, so I will combine them as I turn the compost heap
Sounds good. I'm afraid I have neglected my outside compost since I got into worm farming. That is a project for the spring.😁👍🏼🪱
Hi Anne when you started your channel I was at about 35 years with worm bins so must be getting on for 40 years BUT still learning from you
I never stop learning. I'm glad I'm helping 🪱😃👍🏼
Hey Ann, hey blue 👋🏿
Hello Tiffany 👍🏼😃🪱
Love it, great time watching and man there’s some worms in there. Lol
When I change my breeder bins and there’s 600in a bin they look like the balls lol but that shows you have loads and loads in there. It’s amazing
Also I’ve been worm farming for 14-15months. But I love it.
I do love catching them all together 😍🪱👍🏼
I have been worm farming for 12 to 15 years
Excellent 👍🏼🪱😁
Wish I could believe this wouldn't get dirty or knats ...yourself seems to be doing great. I'm for worm casting
Fruit flies are a pain for sure. I put about 6 inches of bedding on top of the people food to help prevent them.🪱👍🏼😃
any tips for new worm farmers?
what to do in colder seasons and how to get rid of mites?
thanks for your videos they help a lot.
Mine are mostly inside. My outside worms get a pile of leaves and some food that heats up a little. Mites show up and help. I don't try to remove them. They go away or die when not needed.😃🪱👍🏼
@@PlantObsessed thank you very much hope to see more on your channel
Lots of people say don't feed this or that to your worms. I feed my worms everything (except meat and dairy) and they're doing just fine. They're smart enough to pick what they can and can't eat.
People have been repeating the same dogma for so long. They don't even know where the original advice came from. My worms eat everything too..
I even chance cheese every once in a while.🪱👍🏼😁
Hi Anne! Thanks for sharing. I've been at it for a year and a half.
Keep at it. It's hard to imagine what I did before worms. 😃👍🏼🪱
There is so much to learn from this channel / community ❤ question as a beginner. What types of items can I add to a bin to help with bulk when I start it? I generate enough paper waste to do monthly bedding additions when I get to that point but drawing a blank on where to get 20 gallons of material to start with. Thanks
You don't need to do it all at once. Bulk up with food boxes and shipping boxes. Leaves are also a good item to add. 🪱👍🏼😃💙
Thank you for sharing your information. Sincerely, NEW Deep Diver Worm Lady
I'm glad you enjoyed it😀👍🏼🪱
Hi Anne. Did I hear you say you overwinter your peppers in worm castings?!? You don’t mix with potting soil? Just straight castings?
Lol no they are in a potting mix with 20%worm castings. They do sit on top of the worm bins. This usually means the worms move into the pots. 👍🏼🪱😁
I've been at this for about 2 years, not long, but long enough that when I see a worm ball I exclaim "good worms".
Everyone needs encouragement 😃👍🏼🪱
Hi Anne, just started with the worms beginning of February. Got a barrel cut in half. Ordered 1 lbs and prepared bedding. I know it takes 6 months to establish and patience is probably the hardest. Worried about too much moisture. House is pretty cold so I’m sure they are going slow. But it seems the worms are where the moisture/food is. I have coconut coir… should I try to dry them out? I did put some insulation on them to cover because house is approximately 59f (blame my husband). Just turned the bedding and husband said it smelled a bit musty. Used leaves, packing paper and coconut coir for initial bedding. Maybe added too much water??
When the worms and microbes get going the musty will stop. At this stage they need moisture to breed and fill out your barrel. Feed people food sparingly only when the last feeding is gone. That should keep the smell down. 👍🏼🪱😃
Thanks so much. Watching you gave me the courage to start. It was very satisfying putting them in the barrel and watching them sink in and disappear.. I am sure my husband thinks I’m crazy!!!
I’ve been about 6 months. Enjoy your big blue videos. Question when you sift do you get mites others in your sifted castings? How can I avoid this?
They will die without food while I. Storage.. They are the kind of mite that eats dead stuff. Not likely to hurt plants later.😁🪱👍🏼
Do you need a spout or such to drain any liquid near the bottom of the bin? Do you insulate your bin ? i am in snowy cold country but a state park not far away has a bin and they keep thru the winter months
Most of my bins are inside. The ones that are outside have holes in the bottom so the worms can dig deep. There are also lots of leaves around the bin. The red wigglers seem to wake up in spring even in the coldest of my zone 5 winters.👍🏼🪱😁
2 months to fix sandy soil and add nutrients naturally
Cool right😀👍🏼🪱
Please help. What do you add in the form of acid to blend your eggshells? I normally use vinegar but it is never that smooth..
Is it best to use damp cardbord/paper as the last layer? I have used just dried leaves , then my wet newspaper and plastic.
I try al sorts of experiments with my bins...not always to my advantage. But then to start over isn't the biggest challenge.
I added a little orange and a cup of kimchi. The blender is new so maybe just a new blade made the difference. Topping can be wet or dry. I sometimes use dry if i already have gnats. It seems to work better.good luck in your wormery 😁👍🏼🪱
I have learned I can read all the books, but my worms don't so they don't follow the rules. 😂😅😂😅😂
I know right? 😃🪱👍🏼
What's blue's brother's name?
The ENC bin doesn't have a name. Some people have suggested Steve🪱😃👍🏼💙
U can call his brother little blue...😅
@@PlantObsessed I was going for Bloo from Foster's home for imaginary friends or Bluey from Disney channel. But no I'm so conflicted because Steve does make a lot of sense! 😭
U have so much worm castings per year well done🪱🇳🇿
I think worm farming is addicting lol. 🪱👍🏼😁
Good morning, Ann, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b 🇺🇸
Geez,👁 👁 watching you is hypnotizing!
I just found tiny little white worms in my Castings. 😎 cool 😎
