and perhaps the reverse is true. People who take pain (in physical exercise) end up strong, people who take anxiety (from a philosophy like stoicism) end up with inner peace, people who take on being tired (and push on despite how they feel) end up with a drive they can use as they need to.

@4:40 Hamilton makes a great point which goes to the core of substance abuse. When someone takes a drug to eleviate a symptom, the symptom will always come back and sometimes even stronger than before (rebound pain, anxiety etc.) which causes a continuous need for more drugs to hold back that symptom.
all the time stronger....and now that u can end it for however long by doing drugs its never like the first time that got u hooked, and u have a harder time fighting it.
i'm not so sure if that's the point he's making. when framed how you've put it, i see validity in what you're saying. but in the world around me i don't see that being a working model for substance abuse or dependence/addiction.
So ultimately you have to fix the root problem
@@jegr3398 logically that would be the solution. but there's not much that's logical when it comes to addiction. I could say a lot of things about drugs and drug addiction and about the culture of "recovery and rehabilitation." But I think the most important thing, the thing that is most worth sharing is that education on drugs and drug use and addiction is something that is blatantly ignored and yet it's so fucking vital. I could rephrase that to further say that education in its entirety appears to be on the decline in the u.s. right now. Culturally we don't value intelligence and we don't have inspiration to drive the pursuit of knowledge. In high school more than half of my teachers were not only terrible teachers but about half of those were shitty people as well. I'm beyond grateful for the good teachers that I had classes with. Ive met a lot of very fuckin intelligent people who struggle with drug addiction, but I have also met some people who are pretty fucking dumb and uneducated who struggle with drug addiction as well, and those are the people who always seem to have it the worst by far. They get taken advantage of the most and I can't recall knowing anyone in that kind of situation/circumstance that was able to rebound and start moving towards a better life. Always seems to be a free fall until it's not for them.
I knew a guy named Ray who blew himself up cooking meth. He wasn't a really bad guy. It was very sad.
He was actually a Jim Beam & Coca-Cola guy.
He was going through a devastating divorce, and he was always kind of fragile to begin with. This other fellow, Chris, latched onto Ray while Ray was in an emotionally weak place, but still had his nice, big, empty house and plenty of money and time with his wife and kids being gone. Ray was VERY occasionally using meth, along with a few friends, at this time. (This was back in the days of occasional meth use, for real.) This sorry, sorry, Chris guy started flopping on Ray's couch, bc Ray had too good a heart. Eventually, somehow, he talked our good ol boy, Ray, into cooking up some bathtub meth recipe, for themselves.
Soon enough, there was an incident. Ray's lungs were burned, inside, and his eyelids were burned off. He lived for a couple more years, then the severe chemical and lung damage made him sick again and he died.
That's very sad. That stupid series 'Breaking Bad', I think it was called, probably increased cases of good guys crossing the line. Either way if you never blow yourself up, it would soon end bad. Greed and paranoia, or addiction or murder or some other awful outcome.
@@AHD2105 Breaking Bad isn't stupid, it's the greatest and most critically acclaimed television show ever made. If you don't like it you have terrible taste in television. Also I highly doubt it's convinced people to cook meth, if someone decided to cook meth they were already criminals and meth users in the first place, I doubt the show had anything to do with it. Also cooking meth isn't a popular thing anymore, the Mexican Cartels make all the meth in superlabs and ship it across the border. It's so cheap and plentiful there's no point in cooking it anymore, it's also much harder to get the pills needed to cook it.

@@AHD2105 if you watch breaking bad, you’ll see that it tells a very sad story about a man who lost everything because he started selling meth (he wasn’t even addicted - a sober guy - life destroyed because of meth though)
It honestly shows some very disturbingly realistic scenes of broken families, pointless killings, etc

I have such respect and admiration for the people involved in the making of this show.
Not only will this show inspire hundreds if not thousands of people all over the world to become scientists and chemists. It will save lives.
The war on drugs has stood in the way of research for far too long. Progress is painfully slow and future generations will look down on us for it.
But there is no doubt in my mind that this show will play a part in breaking down the festering stigma that stands in the way of not only research and science. But for people millions of people to be able to live a rich and full life.
I was missing Hamilton, he has some really good, brilliant documentaries. It is probably hard to insure guy like him, so are firefighters; someone has to do the job. Thanks for showing it.
Just watching this video was enough to give me meth-anxiety. Hamilton couldn't have said it any better when he said that he's surprised this guy ever actually succeeded in making legit methamphetamine. This is what a zero-tolerance war on drugs gives us.

Hamilton’s observation about irony at the end is spot on. Like through habitual use of these drugs you overload and eventually damage or break the pathways, both narrative and neurological, that the drugs exploit to get you high.

My brother now deals with anxiety and other mental issues he didn't have before habitually using benzos. Hell, even a prescription dose can leave you in the dark, someone I talked to said that they still crave Xanax 8+ years after being taken off a prescription dose.

i just watched a clip where a lady was addicted to ketamine for almost 15 years and got sober, she said the reason for turning to drugs was cause she felt she needed to be accepted for how she looked, so she turned to a drugs that eats at your appearance, addiction is crazy

It's pretty much over. Hamilton's working in a lab full-time right now, he's doing research on novel psychedelics, so there's really no time left to film the show
I think season 3 was his last season. Hamilton wants to focus more on the scholarly side of psychedelic research, which I can’t blame him. Making a series for Vice is entertaining and somewhat informative, but it isn’t making much change.
Big fan of the impromptu reflection on his marriage breaking apart due to, ya know, meth.

It is interesting and enjoyable with a lot of chemicals. I cook in my laboratory, but I lack a beautiful girl who accompanied me on the cooking trip.

A Pharmacopeia first fail home brew synthesis. In all honesty though this weird meth synthesis was destined to fail. The guy looked like he was trying to hybridize the AMMONICARB with Shake N Bake methods while spun out on meth. Probably neither a wise nor safe move. I was worried about both of you when he placed the fire extinguisher on the stove as he could neither see the progression or fail of the synthesis and that the extinguisher might blow up like a bomb.

Being careless like that is how you get caught. I did 4 years in prison for manufacturing methamphetamine and whatever that guy was doing was news to me? It looked like he was combining 3 separate methods of cooking (that have nothing to do with one another) while not even accomplishing what he set out to do in the first place. All because he was spun out and obviously needed sleep, or someone to show him how to actually do it? LoL

I used to cook meth also. He was doing the shake and bake method in a fire extinguisher to produce ammonia. He was making his own ammonia with crude household chemicals (I guess he doesn't have access to ammonia nitrates) he was supposed to build up enough pressure to produce enough concentrated ammonia to break the lithium down! He failed to do that. This is a common way to produce meth been around for like 20 years.

All which are 3 different methods that done together do absolutely nothing..lol. it was just very comical whatever he was doing.
@@justinhayes2194 Agreed he was all over the place plus they mix up the process during filming to stop people from copying so that could have contributed to the confusion. It was hard to watch. I cooked hypo-phosphorus not to many people know this method not "red phosphorus" but I have cooked several different ways. I love the chemistry but hate the drug. I have been clean for 10 years now.

It's pretty unbelievable that he failed, I met someone 5 years back who claimed they could make it in Gatorade bottles while in a moving vehicle no problem, said it was easy no brain stuff to do. Said "if you can follow instructions to make hamburger helper then you could follow the instructions to cook", and that 95% of people who fail or blow themselves up are smoking it while cooking like this guy. I thought for sure the reason he was using the fire extinguisher was because he could remove that downstem inside and then just squeeze the trigger a little bit whenever he wanted to “release some of the gas and smell it to see if it is making ammonia at all” but instead it didn’t seem like he used the fire extinguisher in any way to justify it’s use over pretty much any other container 😂
the fire extinguisher holds certain pressure required for the chemistry to work. i mean it is built to withstand those pressures and is the cheapest solution that works for its purpose. i don't know exactly but probably makes reaching some boiling point of a molecule easier as you need less heat under high pressure.. or the high pressure interacts with some reaction in other ways. not a chemist, but that's why you can't use any other container :)

The synthesis processes that we use are much better than this disgusting synthesis because of lithium and ammonia. We use other chemicals. Methamphetamine has several methods. I prefer cooking meth. It is interesting and enjoyable with a lot of chemicals. I cook in my laboratory, but I lack a beautiful girl who accompanied me on the cooking trip.

you have to let some oxygen in for the electrophile reaction. putting the mixture in a fire extinguisher canister killed the reaction. also you need to release gas at times. also you need to shake it. this was the craziest episode
one may be able to save such batch if you re-heat it and add more lithium in a more controlled environment. some of it anyway. add more acid first. don't try this at home(use your friends home : )
