      They’ve been around for hundreds of millions of years so there’s probably been lots of time for them to diversify and get weird.

      Its their only tool, so its the first thing that gets adapted to new prey. Just like beaks from birds are the first thing that changes.

    The fact that there are entire groups of animals specifically evolved just to eat ammonites goes to show just how insane their numbers were. I like to think they were almost as widespread and rapidly multiplying as Lystrosaurus.

      There were a lot of ammonites at the time. It should've been surprising that some species evolved to feed exclusively on them.

      reminds me of some island where people kept finding fosils of marine predator species but no prey, eventually they determined that the area must have been utterly swamped with Squids (who don't often make fossils)

    I love sharks and ive been studying them by my self for 7 years now and this was so interesting to learn about because I found this shark had a more fasinating set of teeth than the helicoprion in my opinion.

    Water seems to give some of the most peculiar adaptations to organisms. I suppose being subjected to various crushing pressures, some seen, others not. Might have a tendency to cause a few experimental copium dispensers to occur.

    I imagine the prey were crushed but still alive, almost all of the time, as salt water and stomach acid rushed into every crack and open wound while they lay there crippled and being slowly digested alive. Spectacular animal
