Now, that I heard the english version, I see that it lacks the "roughness" and "snappy-ness" that the german one had. In my personal opinion it followed in the footsteps of the Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movies, which were big hits in Germany, because of the german localization that not only elevated but made these movies. Rainer Brandt more or less "invented" the fast pace, rough, one liner- and punchline-heavy style. Difficult to emulate in the english language.

6:14 It absolutely is good advice IRL. Speaking as someone who does HEMA (historical fencing) you never wanna hold a sword with two hands unless it is designed to do so. It is always to your advantage to hold it with one hand as long as it is not too heavy to swing effectively. One handed weapons give benefits to range, speed, and agency in a duel. The most effective combination of weapons in all of renaissance era swordsmanship is a one handed sword in your dominant hand and a dagger in your non dominant.

I remember being 12 or 13 when I fell in love with Morrowind and general reaction I got when I brought that I up amongst older RPG nerds was something along the lines of: "BAAH! You like Morrowind?! That's a BABY game! You must be a stupid BABY for liking it! Repetitive quests, no characters, bad combat. Morrowind's dumb, try Gothic instead, much better game."
The impression I got was that Gothic was the more successful game at the time, while Morrowind was something that you were ashamed to admit you enjoyed.
Of course I didn't understand what sales were back then or the concept of commercial success. So I was genuinely floored when I learned much later on how big of a success Morrowind was, how it buried every other competition at a time when amazing games where coming out.

    • @zennistrad
      @zennistrad Před 2 lety +10

Morrowind's core strengths are very different from Gothic's. While Gothic focuses more on having a tightly-focused, fully-realized world and characters, Morrowind (and TES in general) tends to focus more on making the world as open and large as possible and creating more room for player expression. Morrowind's combat is... not good, but it also gives the player a lot more options for breaking it in half, particularly when Magic becomes involved. Lack of full voice acting in MW also means that, while most of the characters are much flatter overall, there's a lot more information that can be conveyed to the player through dialogue.

  • @chilloutgaming9733

I think the main problem for Gothic outside of Germany is that the character building relies (almost) solely on the excellent dialoge and its voice acting. From what I´ve seen in your video alot was lost in translation. The open world etc was good for its time but obviously thats long past. But I still come back to Gothic sometimes nowadays to slaughter some Trolls with Gorn, Lares, Diego and Milten. ^^

YEP. The english voice acting is really REALLY weak in comparison while the german (and i guess russian and polish one too) are just simply excellent and make the characters memorable and overall atmosphere great. Its just sad to see that most lines that would be classics are completely butchered or voiced badly for example "Baal" Netbek at 15:43 sounds completely delusional in the german version and its hilarious

Oh, wow, I actually recently replayed Gothic 1 & 2 this year and played Gothic 3 for the first time afterwards, too. I'm happy to see you covering this. Gothic 1 & 2 are still amazing in producing a world that feels inhabited, immersive and believeable. That has always been my favourite thing to enjoy in RPGs, ever since I played Ultima VII as a (way too young at the time) child and I was blown away seeing NPCs following schedules and me being able to bake bread by mixing flour and water.
Gothic 3 was a bit of a disappointment to me - and I had the pleasure of playing the patched up version years after. The world felt empty in comparison, and towns felt inhabited by replaceable no-ones instead of people. By the end I felt like I was just playing to finish up the story of one of my youth enjoyments after all those years. I started on the expansion and couldn't bother to go beyond the starting quest. I also genuinely felt the combat in part 1 felt better than in part 3. Once you get used to the controls, itˋs still janky, sure, but it works well enough. Kind of this weird experimentation from before controls were fully standardised across the industry.
Also, yes, as others mentioned - the German voiceacting is way better overall, and it was very good for the time, but it definitely also had some subpar moments.

But the story itself and many of the side quests were enjoyable. It also presented a fairly unique tone compared to the other games, kinda surreal and more I guess... Fairy tale-esque? This is why two-handed swords are so long, in order to compensate for the lower reach.

To this day one of the best ways a limited game world is done. No invisible walls or ocean monsters. Just a lore explanation for why the world has a certain size. Well done.

Holding a weapon with two hands can actually be bad, especially if the weapon has little handspace, or the second hand would hinder the movement. A hatchet would be worse with two hands, same with a rapier, an arming sword usually is best with one hand, unless it has a longer grip. I think the one handed trainer is simply generalising, instead of going into a multi hour Tanget over specifics of how to hold a weapon.

Another game from my childhood on your channel!
I'm a big fan of how your videos are more of a "journey" through the game and less of a structured analysis. Mentioning things like "there's few women, and most are possessions of the faction leaders" is just something you mention off-hand as you discover them in the course of the game, and instead of doing an extended commentary on it and voicing your opinion, you just leave it to the viewer to draw their own conclusion about what & how much these details mean to them, if anything. Kudos!

Ah, Gothic! What a gem! The game brings back so many good memories of a carefree childhood that was partly spent on the streets of Khorinis and on the farms and meadows nearby. It would be great to see a video review of the second part of Gothic, which is the best in the trilogy by the community's consensus.

re: 'why are good video game writers so rare' - i've come to think that it is because many writers in the industry get into gamespace through some informal career track, often via other gamedev specializations. many represent some facet of what could be termed nerd culture, although that term itself is kind of vague nowadays. they bring a shared set of references and expectations into what they do. unfortunately it is rare for writers outside of gamespace to see it as a serious literary medium, and independent developers with those kind of ambitions often lack the budgets necessary, or have to go up against publishers repeating "gamers don't want to read" like a mantra, etc. you can sort of see what happens when writers outside of gamedev get together and make a game with disco elysium. several people on that team taught critical reading/lit prior to making games.

writing videogames requires both, the ability to write a good story, but also to write in a way that works with the mechanics of a game. And it's rare for someone to be good at both.
