Lollipop Chainsaw is unapologetically sexy, over the top, campy fun. As much as I like games that can pull off a dark, serious tone and an engaging story, I love when something gets highly creative and just embraces being silly. Which is why I'm scared of what they're gonna do for the remake, especially without Suda51 and James Gunn. I just hope it's much of the same and they don't miss the point on why people enjoy it to begin with. Btw, Nick's head dangling by Juliet's hip is priceless. It's even sillier to see Santa Monica Studio do the same thing in their recent God of War games with Mimir dangling by Kratos' hip as well. 🤣
I always had a soft spot for games like: MGR, Dante's Inferno, Lollipop Chainsaw and Evil Within. Divisive/Underrated at the launch, but then they'll become iconic and beloved by many! This is yet another banger Maria, thank you very much❤️
I saw the original reveal trailer and instantly wanted to play it, I got it at launch and loved it so much, Juliet is iconic, her and Nick's relationship and banter is really fun, it has hilarious jokes, nice boss fights, the music is great. I really loved Lollipop Chainsaw and can't wait to play the remake coming this year. Also omg you saying Juliet joins Bayonetta and Alice as some of your faves had me screaming cause same, I honestly recommend you check out Remember Me, it has a great story, unique combat mechanics, amazing music and Nilin (the protagonist) is also up there for me with the three ladies you mentioned as an amazing female protagonist.
I'm a sucker for the hyper feminine aesthetic and this game was definitely something I loved on the down low as an emo teen 😂 with MSI and the legend Tara Strong, this game is literally my youth wrapped up into one game 🩷
I absolutely loved this game when I played it back when I was a teenager! Me and my friend were really into the zombie craze and a zombie game that had a teenage girl like us as a protagonist was really special for us. It’s been a real treat seeing you cover both this and Alice Madness Returns, I love how you cover games from an art direction standpoint and it really goes to show that having a great art style really holds up!
Incredible review of an incredible game. Suda is one those people that is there for the ART, to follow his passion and express his vision. That is why his games are so remarkable, love the guy.
I remember a lot of the backlash when it was first released. Even other developers talked poorly of it. There were comments about Lollipop being an infantile and objectifying game. I think a lot of the remarks confuse sexism with sexuality, and that showcases a certain type of policing and embedded Puritanism within the general public. People are incredibly moralistic when it comes to anything, obviously, but when it comes to sex it’s quite extreme. I don’t remember a point in the game where the women were treated as lesser or differently to men. Everyone was objectified in it. Nick is a literal accessory! “Hyper-femininity” has been more prominent in mainstream space in the past few years, namely in the music industry, and I’m glad people are looking back at decade-old media and relishing it. this vid made me track down one of the last remaining French copies of this game I wanted to play it since it came out and it's crazy how it was tailor-made for me and people who grew up during the same generation : Y2K romcoms, chainsaws, zombies, the Misfits, references to various pop rock bands of the time Juliet and Nick's dialogue makes you feel like you're witnessing the weirdest date ever, I love it Plus, it's short as hell and made to be replayed, what a game

I remember seeing so many posters and advertising for this game when I was a teen. Even though I loved zombies games, it was something I had to hide from my parents. They were part of the generation that feared what gore games would do to young minds. My cousin provided me with all my favorite zombie game experiences. He never got the game though. Lollipop Chainsaw 🍭was a fun ass game to play. Tara Strong nailed this role, and I couldn't imagine anyone else voicing Juliet Starling. I met Tara Strong at Fan Expo Chicago 2023, and she signed my Xbox 360 copy of Lollipop Chainsaw 🥰🍭 . I never knew James Gunn was involved with this game, and all the lines and jokes he made for this game are just awesome 👌🏽 My favorite line of Juliet Starling is: "Gonorrhea, Gonorrhea face face Gonorrhea You got Gonorrhea face!" I need to play a Suda game soon! I love the freedom and explosive expression that seems to ooze from these titles! I hope the remaster gets more details soon because I'd love to give the game a try and would love to see a definitive/remaster version release!
Great game, I'm so glad you got to play it and enjoyed it so much. I feel it's actually one of my favourites from Suda. I think it's because it remained fairly positive and wholesome amid all the zany gore, instead of suddenly getting some incredibly grim and depressing detail in the story like several of his other works.
lollipop, shadows, killer7 are the definition of "auteur art" Auteur art: expressions that could only be made from the vision a very particular person (Suda51). they are not loved by the masses, but they are breath of fresh air in a sea of same-y/sequel-ized games, I thoroughly love these games and enjoyed revisiting lollipop via your hardwork. I look forward to your thoughts on shadows of the damned.
I wish this game get at least a remaster before the remake. This new version already has that cursed "adapted for modern audiences" on the announcement. I hope I'm wrong, but there's a chance that none of those original game highlights will come back in the remake. Thanks for the amazing video!
tbh I would welcome some line changes since there were a couple moments that were really uncomfortable and unnecessary... but apart from that I honestly think there's no real reason to cut anything else out. I do know they're having issues with licenses for some of the music, which was a huge part of the game's vibe so that's quite disappointing already :(

During the time of Lollipop Chainsaw, a lot of his studio's games appropriately slipped under the radar after release. Would love more critical analysis of their art direction and theming! They really didn't get enough of it at the time. You're in for a treat the further you go down Grasshopper's rabbit hole!
This game has always intrigued me for how unabashedly comedic and silly it is. Really seems to fly under the radar. I'll have to check it out sometime.
I remember being a tween in the heyday of this coming out, to say it was my hyperfixation is an understatement. I think what's interesting is the male critics of the time telling us that the game was mid and not worth anyone's time past the opening stage, I always disagreed and believe this game was special. Especially with how you pointed out this game has a sizeable female fanbase now. Weird how that turned out. I think Tara Strong's performance has a lot to do with endearing Juliet to women, it's hard to imagine her with any other voice and personality. I even managed to grab an official Juliet Starling figurine that I still have today! Looks like it just needed some time before people really started to appreciate it for what a lively, fun and charming creation it is. Always will appreciate this lightning in a bottle.
Imagine if the guy who rewrote the script for Lolipop Chainsaw is now leading the whole new cinematic universe on his shoulders of DC characters. This is truly an amazing experience, thanks for showing that!
Michael Rosenbaum was The Flash in the DCAU "Justice League" series. With this being voice-acting work, I would think that was the most germane piece of experience that he brought to the table.
btw if anyone's looking for SUDA51 games to check out, an underappreciated & free title is Let It Die. Wasn't hugely popular even for a free-to-play game, but it's definitely got that bizarre Grasshopper Manufacture style.
After years of watching CZcams vids discussing Suda's games, I finally gave the No More Heroes games a go when they came to Switch a few years ago. And yeah, they were great. I really, really want to play Killer7, and for him to make his original vision for Shadows of the Damned. Lollipop Chainsaw could be a potential play one day too, especially with the James Gunn connection
gameplay doesn't hold a candle to hack and slash greats but suda51's stream of consciousness filtered through james gunn with a unique comic book aesthetic, wack humor, and sexy style makes it a favorite of mine.
I can't wait for the remake. I remember hearing about Lollipop Chainsaw when it came out, but I was still too young to play violent games and there was no way my parents were gonna let me play something like this. And now the original is incredibly hard to find, so the remake is pretty much my only hope to play it at this point.
I still find this game a bit mid, but you do make a good case. I recently reviewed Dead Rising 2, and I couldn't help but think of Lollipop Chainsaw. I miss when games were unapologetically fun.
Yikes! This will be hard to the remaster devs…. Cutting off the music (the reason why is delisted) is necessary but the tone of the game would change dramatically unless they came with a solution.
Passed this up as a teen because of the cover art. Bot the first time judging a game by its cover has steered me wrong From the cover to the advertising I thought it was a lewd game aimed at men. Sounds so camp and fun. Think I'll pick up the remaster

This was such a fun game to play. I am glad they're remaking the game.
This game has always intrigued me for how unabashedly comedic and silly it is. Really seems to fly under the radar. I'll have to check it out sometime.
I remember being a tween in the heyday of this coming out, to say it was my hyperfixation is an understatement. I think what's interesting is the male critics of the time telling us that the game was mid and not worth anyone's time past the opening stage, I always disagreed and believe this game was special. Especially with how you pointed out this game has a sizeable female fanbase now. Weird how that turned out. I think Tara Strong's performance has a lot to do with endearing Juliet to women, it's hard to imagine her with any other voice and personality. I even managed to grab an official Juliet Starling figurine that I still have today!
Looks like it just needed some time before people really started to appreciate it for what a lively, fun and charming creation it is. Always will appreciate this lightning in a bottle.
Imagine if the guy who rewrote the script for Lolipop Chainsaw is now leading the whole new cinematic universe on his shoulders of DC characters.

Michael Rosenbaum was The Flash in the DCAU "Justice League" series. With this being voice-acting work, I would think that was the most germane piece of experience that he brought to the table.

btw if anyone's looking for SUDA51 games to check out, an underappreciated & free title is Let It Die. Wasn't hugely popular even for a free-to-play game, but it's definitely got that bizarre Grasshopper Manufacture style.
This game is great for me on the merits that Tara Strong plays a zombie slaying cheerleader. Which, is oddly in tune with Bubbles from PPG ngl

After years of watching CZcams vids discussing Suda's games, I finally gave the No More Heroes games a go when they came to Switch a few years ago. And yeah, they were great. I really, really want to play Killer7, and for him to make his original vision for Shadows of the Damned. Lollipop Chainsaw could be a potential play one day too, especially with the James Gunn connection
gameplay doesn't hold a candle to hack and slash greats but suda51's stream of consciousness filtered through james gunn with a unique comic book aesthetic, wack humor, and sexy style makes it a favorite of mine.
The only bad thing about this video is now I want this game and PS3 copies are so expensive.

I can't wait for the remake. I remember hearing about Lollipop Chainsaw when it came out, but I was still too young to play violent games and there was no way my parents were gonna let me play something like this. And now the original is incredibly hard to find, so the remake is pretty much my only hope to play it at this point.
If you still have a ps3 you could install a custom firmware and download it for free :P

Game's the best B-movie schlock game I've played. Can't remember why I never finished it. I should rectify that.
I still find this game a bit mid, but you do make a good case. I recently reviewed Dead Rising 2, and I couldn't help but think of Lollipop Chainsaw. I miss when games were unapologetically fun.

Yikes! This will be hard to the remaster devs…. Cutting off the music (the reason why is delisted) is necessary but the tone of the game would change dramatically unless they came with a solution.

From the cover to the advertising I thought it was a lewd game aimed at men. Sounds so camp and fun. Think I'll pick up the remaster
