Paper Mario is NOT an Ordinary Nintendo Remake

  • It is really hard to say something unique about Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door after all the discussion this last week, so I want to get straight to the point: this remake might be the only opportunity we get to bring back the old Paper Mario style. There is no benefit of the doubt here if the game doesn't do well - this in a sense could be a put or shut up notice coming directly from Nintendo.
To those of you who played and enjoyed this game and want to play a sequel in the same style, you need to get this remake. To those of you who have never played this game before - you owe it yourself to. This is a very special game that truly stands out even amongst all other Mario games. I can't recommend it enough. Recommend the remake to friends if you enjoyed it! Every last copy counts.
In this video, I want to briefly discuss the Paper Mario series overall. While many point to the newer games as bad, I think that both Color Splash and Origami King were good games that could've been excellent with just a few different design choices. In some ways, they are stronger than the classics, and in a best case scenario, I think the best aspects from old and new could truly be combined alongside some new mechanics. But we have to be vocal about what is good to begin with, and that really involves analyzing the design of these games too.

Even the original TTYD outsold OK if you compare the % based on console units sold.
It was touched on in this video, but raw 1:1 sales figures are kinda hard to use when the switch sold 129m and the Gamecube sold only 21m.

@@HDRookieHonestly I think a lot of you are taking the entirely wrong impression from this situation.
The goal was always to retransition Paper Mario back to being an RPG series after Alpha Dream; and thus the Mario & Luigi series, went under.
The whole point to Super Paper Mario going down a different route in the first place was three fold:
      • it was originally planned for the Gamecube, which had notoriously lackluster RPG sales compared to the PS2
      • Nintendo did not want to release another game in a near identical format on the same console (Super Paper Mario was pushed back and reworked into a Switch title)
      • why bother having two concurrent Mario RPG series run side-by-side and potentially eat into each other's sales when RPGs were selling like crazy on the GBA?
So in that vein the Paper Mario series became like a halfway point between a Mario RPG and Yoshi game: a vehicle whose primary purpose was to experiment with innovative arts and crafts visual styles and experimental gameplay ideas.
But with the Mario & Luigi series effectively dead in the water that leaves space for Nintendo to slide Paper Mario right back into its original position as the go-to Mario RPG.
Like, you really think it's a coincidence that after Alpha Dream dies we get two Mario RPGs on the same home console for the first time ever?
Or that it's essentially an inverse of the Super Paper Mario situation, starting with one off brand Paper Mario game and one classic RPG style one?
So yeah, I'm calling their bluff.
They chose TTYD solely to make the fandom feel like Nintendo *finally* heard them and gave them what they wanted, and they'll feel all special and warm and fuzzy thinking that they made this happen when it's literally just Nintendo doing exactly what it planned to do ever since Alpha Dream kicked the bucket.
Still hope it and SMRPG sell well because they're both awesome, but suffice it to say that I think Paper Mario is going the RPG route regardless of TTYD's sales.

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  Před 9 měsíci +10

@@StomachPlugI don't buy that they were eating into the sales of the Mario & Luigi games. These aren't multiplayer games with similar mechanics... they're entirely different RPG games. Having a new, unique, game every year or two was great. Fans of one series typically liked and supported the other (for instance, i am a pm first and have a M&L themed alias), and it's not like they were always on the same system either.
Perhaps the mindset did change since Sticker Star came to the 3DS. But I think they were pretty stupid to make these assumptions. Sticker Star barely outsold TTYD despite being on a far more successful console. And Dream Team sold less than Bowser's Inside Story despite clearly being the better game between it and Sticker Star. Even with Super's changes to TTYD, the most successful era sales wise of PM/M&L were the 3rd generation, where there was a huge focus on story in both SPM/BiS. They always could co-exist.
Perhaps the need for more RPGs did open up after Alphadream went under, but I think it is also plausible to think that they were wrong to begin with, and that these events just lined up in the same time period.
The reason why I think this is because it would make plenty of sense for them to just start a new Mario RPG series in place of M&L instead of going back to Paper Mario for it, because Paper Mario had turned into something else. Them turning PM back into a RPG would be an acknowledgment that new PM is not necessary to them. Which again, implies a mistake was made.

    • @StomachPlug
      @StomachPlug Před 9 měsíci +2

@@HDRookie I never said that I believe that the games ate into each other's sales, I was talking about Nintendo corporate *believing* that they would eat into each other's sales. You need to understand that this was both still within the midlife of console wars (where people would needlessly bicker about why the others suck out of brand loyalty) but kids were also generally the receiver of games and not making purchases themselves. A lot of parents of the era also didn't make very informed purchasing decisions and having a mentality line "we already got you a Mario RPG, why do you need another one?" were hardly uncommon.
The corporate side of the company has to keep an eye out for what they perceive to be possible riadbunpa like this and they often end up taking what appear to be baffling decisions from the outside to the wider community that isn't privy to those meetings.
Also, while your point on them being completely different kinds of games is true from the perspective of someone fully invested in them, that is simply not the perspective of people in charge of marketing or okaying a product:
      • notably unrealistic cartoony art style with a heavy chibi lean
      • RPG with exploration that is informed primarily by jumping, with world interaction fueled by field skills wherein Mario and their partner cooperate to perform a specialized action to grant new traversal opportunities
      • turn based gameplay using lower digit mathematics compared to other contemporary RPGs to make them more approachable to a wider audience
      • player choice is incorporated by allowing them to choose which stat increases at level up
      • the player controls two characters at a time during combat
      • all characters; player and enemy, get one action per turn rather than number of actions being based on a speed stat calculation, generally starting with the player's turn
      • player attacks primarily by jumping or using a hammer, and both of these actions can also be used during field traversal
      • utilizes a timed input mechanic during combat to both increase damage output and reduce damage taken, with alternative controls (such as tilting the control stick among others) being applied to input special moves or alternate attack methods
      • acquire both new combat and field skills in tandem throughout story progress, the new abilities the player gains this way are repurposed versions of the same action in both field and combat, such as Mario using a hammer on the other party member to send them beneath the ground or Mario jumping on the other party member to launch them forward
      --------------------------------------------
Really, I could go on and on, like Bowser generally serving as a secondary antagonist that actually ends up helping Mario in the long run, the very silly and fourth wall leaning dialogue, star shaped collectible story Macguffins needed to stop the bad guys, use of mushrooms as primary healing items, etc., etc., so on and so forth.
I reiterate: you and I; as people that are genuinely invested and play these games, understand the nuances all of these things entail, but there are an absolute metric ton of shared concepts and design choices that both of these series take that are a very specific and particular flavor that only Mario RPGs have. Things which were generally established by the very first game in this overarching Mario subseries itself, Super Mario RPG.
This is the kind of broad strokes understanding that the corporate side of a company uses to make the financial decisions, it's not like their team of lawyers and analysts and board members all go and play through every single game Nintendo releases, especially not something that requires 10+ hours of play to reach completion. On their end it is just product that needs to be pushed to maximize payback to stockholders.
I really think you misunderstand just how poorly RPGs were selling on Nintendo home consoles with the start of the 3D era.
Nobody played Tactics Ogre 64: Person of Lordly Calibur.
Nobody played Beaten Kaitos and even less people played its sequel, and both of these games were made by Monolith Soft and are considered cult classics.
Mother and Fire Emblem didn't bother to appear on the N64 at all, and Path of Radiance on Gamecube (and later its sequel on Wii) sold incredibly poorly compared to more mainline Nintendo properties, well below corporate expectations, and even substantially below previous installments.
Even the home console Pokémon RPG titles only sold sort of okay.
This Nintendo home console RPG stigma lasted even into the Wii era, it's literally why Nintendo of America refused to bring Xenoblade/ The last Story/ Pandora's Tower over until Operation Rainfall was a success and NOE offered to front the localization costs.
All of this stuff comes from the same corporate decisions, and a lot of that was based on the idea that players go to Nintendo consoles to play more action and family oriented content. Turn-based RPGs were just not regularly wowing people on home console systems at the time and all in-game graphics were quickly catching up to the level of the high fidelity cutscenes that made the genre explode in popularity in the first place.
Taking all of these things into account and combining that with Mario being the mascot of the company, can you really be surprised that the corporate side of Nintendo was worried about releasing a Mario RPG on console?
They were absolutely stupid to make these assumptions, I agree with you.
I agree that coexistence was a possibility, but hindsight is 20/20 and they were hedging their bets on what they saw as downward sales trends in the console RPG genre.
Note that I keep pointing out consoles here, handheld RPGs were doing great to the point that we got great ports/ remakes/ new entries in Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei among plenty of others.
Console game budgets were ballooning (RPGs in particular, because now you're making fully 3D assets for the zillion places that the characters travel to and the 200 monster beastiary), the number of console sales shrank (until the Wii), console RPG sales were going down...
This is when we hit that horrible era of "brown" videogames here too, primarily as a result of the Sony PS1 new player boom and people just growing out of more colorful and cartoony experiences.
It sucks, but all of this was the perceived trend at the time, and right or wrong Nintendo corporate figured that diversifying Paper Mario into another genre was the best money making opportunity throughout all of this.
The collective spite and unfulfilled expectations of the established Paper Mario fandom was considered an acceptable loss when faced with all of that, and it's why TTYD is dressed up like an apology for all of those years of taking the wrong road.
They're never going to publicly acknowledge it more than that.

Origami King gave me mixed signals, but I decided to get the game anyway because the story seemed interesting enough to at least try the game. And for what it’s worth, I did enjoy it for the most part. Any time I could run around and explore was enjoyable, I liked interacting with stuff, I loved finding things for the museum and getting max health hearts, and the ring system was surprisingly enjoyable to an extent. But they still insisted on making very cruel boss fights (Rubber Band has NO right being so hard when it’s only the second major boss, and the Water and Ice Vellumentals are a pain to fight as well). But seeing Bug Fables release gave me hope that maybe, just maybe, Nintendo would finally listen to reason and give us back the Paper Mario we know and love. And while I did play Bug Fables after finishing Origami King, it still wasn’t exactly what I wanted. And then the announcement happened. I was so shocked and so ecstatic that I injured my back while jumping for joy. 😅
Thank you, Nintendo, for saving The Thousand Year Door from becoming impossible to play outside of emulation. Thank you for finally hearing our cries! And thank you, everyone in the TTYD community, for banding together and declaring your love of this masterpiece! This would not have been possible without your efforts!

I think the thing about Bug Fables has to do with it not being a Mario game, as mentioned. Besides the stuff like platforming and hammering not being as "prominent" / obvious (I think Mario benefits from getting to be the standard almost, sometimes simple makes for better gameplay), I think Bug Fables had to work much harder to get you to genuinely care about the world and the cast. I really did like how the 3 characters interacted with each other and all spoke though, those moments made it a lot easier to understand their dynamic. I wish the world in the early game was just a little bit more varied.

All Intelligent Systems needs to do is get over the hurdle of pointless combat systems. Origami King would have been tolerable to me if the combat had some kind of reward or incentive (exp for example).
If I was Tanabe, I'd be looking at the positive feedback from this announcement and then asking myself why the gameplay from TTYD works so well. Then, they can make an original game that doesn't even have to follow the same rpg mechanics of the old games, but just make something that works (SPM does this very well).

There was so much good from the last 2 PM games that were attached to subpar combat systems. I just hope that the community is able to discern the good qualities from those games because some aspects could unironically improve the gamellay style of TTYD, too

@@HDRookie Out of curiosity, what would you pull from CS or TOK that was unique to those titles into a new paper mario game?

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  Před 9 měsíci +3

@Darth555 The overworld design was so much more varied, and at times vertical. A lot of newer fans call TTYD a hallway simulator and I can see why. The colorless spots on CS and later TOK provide great incentive to explore, and you get rewards out if battle this way. It's great for completionists and forces you to engage with enemies more (it would be easier to dodge them with more space than TTYD). So the games draw you to spots. This would be cool with actually fun battles (I think these tend to distract us from the more hallway like structure of TTYD).
The writing was funnier in recent games too. I think they've just been steadily improving in this regard. The jokes would land even better though in a game that has a plot too though. Because sometimes they feel like they're trying too hard to get a laugh out of you as is.
Lots of people trashed SS/CS for the world map but it actually made CS a better game. Each chapter had so many different unique ideas because of this, and the stories didn't have to follow path->town->path->dungeon design much at all. In CS sometimes a chapter would have you do something like climb a mountain, search for a help character in a forest, find you need to help him, then go investigate an excavation site, to get an item needed to enter a temple, and then wrap it up with a coliseum bout. An overarching narrative would hold all of these events together and allow for extreme variety within a chapter. And lots of these chapters still had strong themes despite being more varied.
Imo I wouldn't go back to a world map, but would consider how a chapter could be more varied. Some of TTYDs best chapters have a very unique idea (really the mystery solving ones) and they run with them. CS is able to do many more because they're more segmented I find.

@@HDRookieWould you say the CS levels are actually better designed? Or is that just player preference after the era of open world games and there's a natural bias against linearity? Because even if the general sense of the levels were left to right hallways, there's a lot of areas in levels that play with verticality. In most levels at least somewhere.

Remember how Color Splash only sold 50,000 copies, making it one of the worst selling Mario games ever, but they still made a sequel for it. Obviously I don't wanna take any chances and hope this game's sales reach the moon (laughs in Sans Undertale) but Nintendo's history regarding sales is pretty spotty actually.

@SB2749 Think this the key also. Sales aren't really indicative if game quality, but perhaps slightly correlated. What I will say though: if the game were to outsell Origami King, this would be a shocking revelation with an obvious takeaway. Gen 9 Pokemon didn't outsell Gen 8, Splatoon 3 didn't outsell Splatoon 2, and Tears of the Kingdom likely won't outsell Breath of the Wild. This has nothing to do with game quality, it is just a reality for follow-ups on the same console. TTYD beating TOK would create an internal discussion that could not be ignored though, in my opinion.

While I definitely love it, it has much to do with NIntendo's guideleine about not giving RPG contents a major impact on the franchise overall. Like, the lack of participation of regular cast like Toad and Yoshi seems to tell that Nintendo want to define it as a "separable spin-off". Even if they're willing to remake it we still don't know whether these remakes will leave more impact on future Mario games.

I'm kind of not against remakes for two reasons. `For one, sometimes getting the original game is a nightmare. TTYD for instance, was costing around $150 for a copy. That's not including the fact that you needed a Gamecube with controllers and hookups. That's over $200 in stuff just to play one really old game. TTYD isn't even the worst example. What if you want to play Chibi Robo these days? Your wallet had better be ready for a beat down. The second is that for many of us gamers, we don't realize that a lot of time has passed since many of these games last came out. There's entirely new generations of kids and teenagers (and adults even!) that never got to play these games, and don't have the money to hunt them down I mean Super Mario RPG is my favorite, and it's been nearly 30 years since release. There's loads of people that would like to pay it, but never had the chance to (because many weren't born yet!). So I kind of feel like companies should have a constant flow of remakes along with the new stuff. It's also important in a preservation sense as well.

Given that it seems that we're very likely at the tail end of the Switch's life cycle, the fact that the recent Direct was kinda remake heavy wasn't too much of an issue to me. If this was the beginning or middle of the Switch's life cycle, I would have been a bit disappointed. I mean I was disappointed seeing the big thing for the September 2019 Direct was a Xenoblade Chronicles remake, especially considering that Direct didn't offer much new. Here though, knowing we're very likely looking at a new console next year, it was okay.
When it comes to the TTYD remake, I agree that this is bigger than it seems. It could be our ticket to a return to form. I do genuinely hope it sells well. I even hope it outsells Origami King. That would be great. With the positive response and great sales, maybe Nintendo will finally begin to rethink their approach to the series.

I always thought this CT theme sounded like it was straight out of SMRPG too, haha.

@@ThePaulineuI mean, I'd definitely talk about it. But I likely wouldn't have the same urgency. Mario & Luigi's issue is one of money and Alphadream going under... I'm not sure there's anything we can do about. With Paper Mario, the issue isn't the ability to make games. It's the willingness to make the ones the fans want.

Paper Mario is my favorite series of all time, mainly because of the first two games. The fact that this is even coming out on Switch, let alone being a full remake, was never something I saw happening. I've been buying every Paper Mario game to show Nintendo that I still want them, but I never thought they'd even consider the old games ever again.

Ttyd is probably the single most important game to who I am as a person
It is what kickstarted a life long love of video games and is the reason I am where I am today.
When I tell you I shot up in my seat hahaha
I'm so happy I can finally own a copy of my favourite game
Aside from all that though, man. What I would to for a paper mario game that combines the strengths of both new and old paper mario
As much as I love ttyd, it has its problems
Origami king actually has really solid and fun worlds to run around in
A combination of the two would be my DREAM game

Paper Luigi storyline with actual turn base game with partners as a dlc would be more exciting to me than the every title after TTYD. I will never understand why they had to take something amazing and ruin it with all the random weird fighting styles. There are great parts in each of the games, but the first two had a clear identity. I’ll never get over it. Rant over. I’ll buy the game and definitely play it. Paper Mario will always be close to my heart and I genuinely hope that the community can show them what we want and that they do listen ❤

I just hope the remake has something to offer people like me who have already played TTYD multiple times over. The new graphical upgrade looks nice, but I'm not eager to play this game yet again- I'm really burned out on it. I'll encourage my friends who've never played it to pick it up, but I'd need to see new content. Even if they just shook up the level design a bit and changed up some of the dialogue so it's not all the exact same conversations, with the same exact questions on the Quiz shows, and the same exact puzzles, etc. Adding a hard mode would be awesome (but not likely). I just don't expect anything new in the way of content, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I seriously hate it when people complain about re-releases of old games like this being full price, because many people (myself included) don't like going through complicated processes of emulating games to play them, nor do we want to buy used versions online for unbelievably inflated prices. So I think we should all be grateful that this fan-favorite is finally getting an accessable way to play it.

    • @HDRookie
      @HDRookie  Před 5 měsíci +1

The people that complain about remakes in general are a bit annoying - but I can understand the take that it should be $40 TBH. Worked well for the Metroid Prime remaster imo. Would be a much more reasonable rebuy and easier pill to swallow for people on the fence.

While I am happy for TTYD, I would be sad if the following Paper Mario games copy it instead of the original Paper Mario 64. I feel like already when TTYD came out it was falling too far away from what made the original Paper Mario 64 so great. If you haven't already I encourage everyone to find a way to play it. It's an absolute right of passage as a gamer. To this day I still haven't found a single RPG (yes, not Bethesda, BG3, anything) to have as much love and detail put into it as the original Paper Mario.
