  • This week on Buckle Up, Harry drives a Discovery, and tries to work out if it's the perfect second hand off-roader, a brilliant family hauler or a financial catastrophe waiting to happen?
    It might be all three...

    I have a Defender Td5, a Disco Sport and a Disco 3. I can't fault my Disco 3. The crank failure is usually due to poor maintenance or driving it like a sports car.

    I've owned my Disco 3 since 2010. When I bought it there was 30k+ on the clock. Now there's 300k on it and I still love it.
    Over the years yes I've had 2/3 large bills goes with the territory. Would I ever get rid of it, he'll no 😂

    My dad used to have a 2005 Discovery 3 when I was a kid, and I thought it was a very nice car indeed.
    It was September 2010, and I remember eagerly awaiting the moment when my dad would pull up onto our driveway in it, and when I saw PN55TZH pulling onto our driveway for the first time, I immediately went outside to have a look around it, and I remember being very impressed by what I saw.
    Our Discovery was a 2005 (55-reg) HSE model with the 2.7-litre TDV6 turbodiesel paired with the 6-speed automatic, and it was finished in a dark metallic blue (called Buckingham Blue) with the 'Alpaca' cream leather interior, which looked really nice.
    Because our Discovery was an HSE model, it was fully loaded with all the bells and whistles, some of which we’d never had on any car we’d ever owned before, including tri-zone climate control, heated rear seats, rear audio controls, etc, which 10-year-old me thought was very impressive indeed. Plus, its air suspension made it a very comfortable and relaxing car to travel in - as Jeremy Clarkson said in his Discovery 3 review back in Series 5 of Top Gear to describe the ride quality, "it doesn't go over bumps, it just flattens them."
    It also proved to be very useful during the massive amounts of snowfall we had in the UK during the winter of 2010/11 that we experienced around that time, because being four-wheel-drive it had no trouble whatsoever driving on the snow-covered roads that would have left my mum's Zafira struggling for grip.
    Even to this day, I still consider the Discovery to be one of my favourite cars we've had out of all the cars my family has ever owned so far.

      Funny coincidence that our fathers bought their Disco 3's around the same time (2007 for us), ours was a lowly GS in Santorini back with grey cloth seats though it still felt like a big improvement on our Mondeo 2.5 V6 zetec and it was so loved that my father's next four cars were all Land Rovers.

    I have a Discovery 3 SE V8 with 84K miles on it and absolutely love it. I really can't complain about gas mileage for a V8 and it's weight it's good. As far as the grill it's a nice look I did the same also changed the rear taillights for the led smoked look from the Discovery 4. It has it's gremlins but wouldn't change it for anything else. 🇮🇹 🇬🇧

      I doubt any V8 owner has any complains about the fuel consumption. Mine is V8 HSE. I m more than satisfied regardless of its thirst fears.

    you missed the 2 hidden cup holders in the middle row right at the bottom of the center console and the 12v connector in the boot ... also dont forget the gearbox problems it needs serviced even when landrover says it dont the dodgy weak oil pump which needs replacing with the new version or it kills the crank ... they also eat turbo pipes and breaks .... but i wouldn't change mine for the world

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  Před 3 lety +1

      Ah yes, I forgot about those cup holders. We were always three up in the back so they never got a look in but they seemed even wider and shallower (so prone to spillage) than the door pocket ones. The rest of this comment is gold, you can tell your a proper land rover owner (I know the joy/pain, I have a Jag, and I'm sure I'll have a Land Rover too before long)

    Ang on...the D4 with the 3.0L twin turbo diesel is the one with random crank failures not the 2.7L
    It has other issues maybe but not that one.

      It’s far more common on the d4 than the d3, the d3s oil pump snaps off, much more common issue, but there is an updated one. So easy fix. Very few d3s have had cranks snap compared to the d4

      @@nickgoode8579 thanks for your reply, I know the D4 is meant to be the better vehicle all round but I actually like the D3 a bit more. I’d probably be less worried about scratching it off road too!

    4:30 Why they put volume & radio control at the back, it is will help you to control the sound or channels when you sit at the back especially when you stop or hang out.

    Those roads look familiar......apart from the snow, 2 winters I drove a Mondeo 2.2 through the snow (2009, 2010) from Darlington to Sunderland 5 days a week, moved to a village just outside Darlington and decided we needed a 4x4 and it's hardly snowed since.

      I found out after buying my 05 Reg car a few years ago. We had a fault code and our mechanics found that EGR was blanked. The car is relatively economical with 30mpg, rarely less than that. But I have no comparison to a Disco3 with EGR. The emissions are within limits.

    I’ve just bought a discovery 3 I really don’t know what way your driving the vehicle I’m getting 30.8 mpg and the breaks are very stoppable if someone disagrees with me love to hear your in put 👍👍👍 🇮🇪

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  Před 3 lety

      The MPG wasn't just from me driving during the review, my parents owned two discovery 3s and generally they would sit between 25 and 27 in normal driving, obviously MPG is heavily affected by driving style so you probably just have a lighter foot than most. Also the brakes are fine they will definitely stop the car but they definitely aren't as good as say an X5 or a XC90

      Oh Really? We had a base spec as our first one and it came with them and I did cross reference that against a website that listed then as standard equipment, where they not on the commercial veriant? Or the ones with manual transmissions maybe I think the auto was a cost option?

    There's an old saying, "If you want to go to the jungle, get a Land Rover. If you want to return from the jungle, get a Land Cruiser."
    That old saying is getting more and more relevant with the more tech they add to their newer generations.

    • @BuckleUpShow
      @BuckleUpShow  Před 3 lety

      For drivability and refinement absolutely, a modern auto with more speeds will be more efficient and a little faster to 60 with the same power though and will probably have an overdrive gear to drop the revs on a cruise to improve fuel economy
