    I just shingled a 10x16 gambrel roof using your measuring method. Perfect stair step for my taste. My pattern drifted a bit but that's on me. Thank you for such a helpful straight forward video. I watched all kinds of videos,too many.

    Im a remodel contractor, ive always steered away from roofing. After hurricane zeta last year I had no choice but to learn, because that's all people needed lol. Thanks to your videos, not only did I learn quickly but I also find myself enjoying it. Nowhere near as fast as you, but thanks to you I feel pretty confident in the quality.

    I just started to learn how to roof. I’ve done maybe 10 in the last couple months on volunteer sites after hurricanes etc. your videos have been so helpful! My biggest issue with the stair step is how much waste I end up with. I’ll def be trying this next time.

      @NWIVeteranConstruction  Před 2 lety +3

      As an extremely experienced roofer.. the method you said is reinventing the wheel. You're 100% allowed to have non factory seems. I'd recommend a factory edge as well but why go out of your way to get it if it's not extremely important? And If a shingle falls short of the ending edge by an inch you have to cut it back or use a smaller piece as i demonstrate in several videos. So if that's aloud, why hang them off the edge and make it more difficult to cut? Useless. Cut straight and use the more efficient method lol I don't get it with some of these comments

    If you over hang your shingles off the gable with your correct stagger on your roof and cut them flush with your starter you don’t have to cut over top of your other shingle and your cuts are always straight then you use those cuts as your as your “staircase”.. hope you understand and wish I could show you 😂🤟.. it’s exactly how you do it but your cutting flush with your starter instead of on top of your other shingle. Keep up the good work brotha !

    • @NWIVeteranConstruction
      @NWIVeteranConstruction  Před rokem +2

      i know what you're saying but i cut very carefully and extremely straight. i pay a lot of attention and fix anything that looks a little crooked but its extremely rare that i even have to. cutting off that side of the rake is awkward af lol doesn't make sense to me personally.

    • @kegankilpatrick7623
      @kegankilpatrick7623 Před 11 měsíci

      There’s a time and place for your your way of cutting the stagger … if your scared or feel awkward 😂😂 I still prefer my way . Wish I could show and explain more in person . I can can give you three points that should make it make sense
      1. Starter is straight you can stager two shingles over your rake and lay a shingle over top of your starter and trace the edge of that shingle leaving you with two cuts and those cut are just as straight as your starter. You don’t have to try to make it straight because you have Just traced a straight line 😂.
      2. You have no risk of cutting paper or shingle beneath you because your not cutting over top of paper or shingle lol.
      3. You have more factory edge’s butt up to each other as a opposed to a cut edge butt up to a factory edge . Cuts edges will age faster than a factory edge and you want any seam/ keyway on a roof to age a slow as possible.
      4. .BONUS. If someone is shingling behind you that person can put three shingles on quicker due to the shingle already being staggered and run 3 shingles out till you cut the two off the rake and complete your first staircase 😂
      I hope this comment wasn’t in vein and the points I made should make sense to you . If not it’s probably due to my poor explanation over a YT comment 😂😂 keep up the good work brother 🤟. I just like to roof efficiently “personally” lol

    just one question why don't you overhang on the edge leave your factory edge on the inside for your butts and just cut it on the drip edge with the hook blade is it cuz you're leaving a 3/4 half overhang and you don't want it flush

    • @NWIVeteranConstruction
      @NWIVeteranConstruction  Před rokem

      Well I have starter up the sides that already over hang about ⅝ - ¾ so I just go flush to that ... but I don't hang over the edge because it's somewhat backwards, unnecessary, the cut is awkward, less accurate and it's all more time consuming. Roofing isn't like siding or flooring, there's no locking edge. And There are specific spots on the roof that allow non- factory seams, no, it actually requires them to ensure the best quality in specific situations. So if it's aloud there, and you make sure you're cutting straight. There's no reason not to do it the way I do it.

      i always shingle the best quality man. these shingles you just snap a line for a starter, and as long as you're not a complete fool, keeping them straight is easy. peeling the plastic film from the back is either a myth, or something some random shingle 20 years ago required you to do. on the back of the shingle, it clearly says, do not peel the film

  • @JbBackFeeble
    @JbBackFeeble Před 3 lety

    I put 2 shingles together since we use gum here and it sticks , I make my first cut on the first shingle about 2/3. Then I flip it over and cut a knife length off or just what I want my smallest stair step as. Then when I take them apart I got perfect steps and I NEVER have to cut something on an end unless I get to where I gotta re start my steps. I think it ends up being the same because I make 2 cuts for 4 steps but my 5th step is already there as a full when I do it.

  • @michaelechivester6478

    I have a question about stair steping using 3 tab shingles. I have seen a lot of videos on stair steping using 3 tab shingles but what ive seen is they start with a full shingle then next shingle above full shingle is 6 inches shorter and so forth until you end with a 6 inch shingle. I havent tried to figure it out but thought i would ask a pro and get my answer faster since im not a pro just doing roof on my house. So here is the question. What is difference between the stair stepping i mentioned above and stair stepping mentioned right now. Start with full 3 tab shingle at rake then next one above will be cut 6 inches shorter woth the 6 inches at the rake the next shingle above is a full 3 tab shingle then next is repeatedup the roof. So 3 tab 2 1/2 then back to 3 tab then 2 1/2 and so forth?

      Agree.Never have to snap more than one line when installing architectural shingles .If you have to you should find a new career. In the "olden" days when 3tabs were exclusively used it would be more common to snap lines. Learning to roof with 3tabs is how roofers honed their craft..A lot of u-tube roofers wouldn't have a clue how to install especially on a more complex installation
