Can you be Gay and Christian? Michael Brown vs Harry Knox

  • An important debate between Dr. Michael Brown, Director of the Coalition of Conscience, and Mr. Harry Knox, Director of Faith and Religion for the Human Rights Campaign, on the topic of "A Christian Response to Homosexuality." The Coalition of Conscience is a network of Christian leaders and believers working together for moral and cultural change through the gospel; the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is the world's largest homosexual advocacy group.
This historic debate took place on February 14th at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, NC with more than 300 in attendance. In February of 2007, Dr. Brown delivered a lecture series at the Blumenthal on "Homosexuality, the Church, and Society," focusing on the work of the HRC on the final night. This drew a direct challenge from Joe Solmonese, president of the HRC, who publicly challenged Brown at the HRC's fund-raising dinner in Charlotte. As a result of that public challenge, Dr. Brown suggested that both sides put the issues on the table in a mutually respectful way, leading to this year's debate.

And he also showed a lack of respect and love for Michael as he stated many insults directed towards him and yet Michael was nothing but respectful and loving. GREAT JOB MR. BROWN! HATS OFF TO YOU!

  • @tubermind

Part of Knox's first argument is that Paul was NOT referring to homosexual relationships such as his. Dr. Brown refutes this, based primarily on the Greek translations, also citing numerous scholars (even from the LBGT community) who agree. Knox then counters that the church is "wisest when it doesn't make an idol of the Bible," and that we mustn't consider the Bible the "only standard by which we judge things." So....when Knox's first point doesn't stick, he contends that personal, direct experience (with what he considers God's Holy Spirit) is ultimately more trustworthy, even when such contradicts the Bible's words on this subject. Knox is a likeable man, but has he forgotten that the heart is deceitful above all? This is why we mustn't let our hearts decide issues when these would choose to override scripture. Sola scriptura! -- because without that, everyone's heart will be their own standard. God has given us the plumbline against which all is measured. It is His Word.

He has clearly denied the Bible, he has therefore denied God and is not in Christ. Another thing apart from him being homosexual is that he is sexually active with his partner, he is sexually immoral and in fornication. He also deflects the subject where it is clear to another subject that's irrelevant. Those topics can be discussed but right here the topic is on homosexuality so deflecting it to justifying it by another wrong is spiritually and biblical immature. I really loved this debate, For one that I got to see how aweful they twisted scripture to fit their life style.. it tells the story of how ignorant they think their "fellow HLBT" are. this is how most people fall into a path of never seeking truth cause they rather believe the lie so they don't read the Bible for them selves. to say King David and Johnathan was gay with one another is sick, yet funny. Harry used this to appeal to the world and their fleshly desires, thinking cloaking it with none biblical understanding. they know they don't read the bible, I wouldn't be surprised if their book only had those passage of scripture they used to deceive one another. all he wanted was the world to except them, not God.

Romans 1:26-27 which says: "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion."
How can one read this and conclude that sexual acts involving same sexed individuals could be anything but "shameful lusts" "unnatural relations" "indecent acts" "received...due penalty for their perversion"....... Did you hear that?...." due penalty for their perversion"......Perversion of what? "natural relations". This passage is plain and clear God called homosexual acts "shameful lusts"" "unnatural perversion" and will have a "penalty". End of story.
Don't get me wrong.....God gave man free will. And here in America one is free to love whom he/she pleases.
If one want to satisfy their lust for each other in ways that God did not intend, then by all means let them go for it. Just do not say that God's word justifies their actions.
If one sticks up their middle finger at God in rebellion and say " I don't give a sh__t what you want. I am going to do it my way." Instead of confessing that they are a sinner and are trying their best not to sin, then they will get exactly what they wanted......the rest of eternity without God. This goes just as well for every other sin under the sun not just homosexuality.

Thus, he could only make us feel sorry for him, but he could not make us understand, from the bible, that this is right. It still remains a sin no matter what we think, feel, believe about others, about us, about what *feels* good or not. This was not a debate, at least from Knox part. It was a confession.

Yes as soon an any of us puts our experience over the Scriptures we are walking blindly. This is the major tenet of many people who are trying to convince the Church that what it has communicated to us is not what it’s communicating to us and the only basis of this is either a reframing of the interpretations or by elevating experience and “love” or “community” over the Word. The mistake is not in using experience but it’s in elevating over the Word in a way that gives our experience more authority than God’s word. No scholarly debate here, no science at all those things follow what the Bible says exactly but rather an appeal to accept, approve, tolerate, affirm because it feels good or will not hurt someone. Living by what we want to be true and using that as a paradigm then wrapping Scripture around it and calling it Christian is backwards and in error always.

I don't think either answered the question, if "Can you be Gay & Christian?" was the topic. I do believe that Dr. Michael Brown brought his points across more powerfully if the basis or standard is biblical view on homosexuality. The basis for being a Christian however is to be Born Again through faith in Jesus Christ and THAT is open to all. Discipleship though is a different story and fully yielding one's self to the Holy Spirit. Speaking from personal experience, a lifestyle of homosexuality works against one's testimony as a Christian in most cases because you will hardly have "born-again" friends who are gay and your unsaved friends will be difficult to relate to in that way. It is one or the other. Jeopardizing one's eternal rewards too (not eternal salvation) is another problem.

  • @VDMac

I greatly admire Dr. Brown's stance towards the LGBT - extend them grace, but tell them God's truth, though it can hurt (but it brings healing in the end). Simple. No hate, not putting down, no discrimination. I feel sad for Knox, though, because he couldn't refute the Bible. He even accused Christians who are against homosexuality as idolizing the Bible. The Bible is God's Word. Everything the Holy Spirit impresses in our hearts must be compared with what the Bible says, since it is God=breathed, therefore it is infallible.

+Oscar Radikoro According to the Bible, marriage is ordained by God to be between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:21-24; Matthew 19:4-6). Gay marriage/same-sex marriage is a perversion of the institution of marriage and an offense to the God who created marriage. As Christians, we are not to condone or ignore sin. Rather, we are to share the love of God and the forgiveness of sins that is available to all, including homosexuals, through Jesus Christ. We are to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and contend for truth with “gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15). As Christians, when we make a stand for truth and the result is personal attacks, insults, and persecution, we should remember the words of Jesus: “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you” (John 15:18-19).

How sad that Harry Knox is so proud of deceiving himself and including the Holy Spirit as a party to his deceptive thinking. The loving, grace-filled intro by Michael Brown was intelligent, thoughtful, logical, truthful, and revealing of the intentions of God and His creation. We all fall short of the glory of God, but as the Bible states in John 14: 15-16 “If you love me, obey me; and I will ask the Father and he will give you another Comforter, and he will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive him, for it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you do, for he lives with you now and some day shall be in you. 18 No, I will not abandon you or leave you as orphans in the storm-I will come to you. 19 In just a little while I will be gone from the world, but I will still be present with you. For I will live again-and you will too. 20 When I come back to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 The one who obeys me is the one who loves me; and because he loves me, my Father will love him; and I will too, and I will reveal myself to him.”
22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but his other disciple with that name) said to him, “Sir, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us disciples and not to the world at large?”
23 Jesus replied, “Because I will only reveal myself to those who love me and obey me. The Father will love them too, and we will come to them and live with them. 24 Anyone who doesn’t obey me doesn’t love me. And remember, I am not making up this answer to your question! It is the answer given by the Father who sent me.
25 “I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Comforter[a] instead of me-and by the Comforter I mean the Holy Spirit-he will teach you much, as well as remind you of everything I myself have told you.
