Probably not this year unless something crazy happens. And this is Russia, so it might yet. Keep in mind Russia has a long history of just winning the battle of attrition by sheer population. Never mind they lose a whole generation of young men. Think of the invasion of Finland and the continuation war.

Strategically, this is Christmas for the US, I mean just look at Putin's standing in the world now and even locally for him, his leadership is functionally at risk. The way things are, Ukraine could bring Russia to its knee's with resources from its allies including the US without direct conflict on the part of them, severely limiting the risk of a nuclear exchange while simultaneously inflicting massive damage to our enemy.
Russia collapsing and becoming a new democracy is actually conceivable. I'm not saying we're there yet, I'm just saying it's an entertainable thought that would have been ridiculous just a few years ago.

      Nope.
Putin backed himself into a corner without realising it.
Remember the early days, when "everyone" thought ohh dear, well that's bye bye to Ukraine?
Then Ukraine showed its fighting spirit.
Then NATO siezed the opportunity to use Ukrainian will power to hold Russia to a war of attrition.
      Well, this is the consequence.
I doubt very much that Zelenski isn't benefitting from the best strategists that NATO has to offer.
This is the plan. Wait till Russia is bled dry, then show just how bad thier situation is.
The backup plan, if Russia was more resilient and Ukrainian losses were too high would be to send many more and much better weaponry.
How often do you see commenters "screaming" that NATO should send more? Well, they don't know the plan.

There's also an attitude 'problem '. Kyiv is almost 700 years older than Moscow. When the Mongols came they used Moscow as their base. Yes, the Mongols sacked Kyiv a few times but they eventually gave up trying to conquer it. Meanwhile Kyiv continued exporting food and enjoyed the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Ukrainians will always view Russians as the barbarians of the east.

By letting Ukraine off its damned leash and letting them loose inside Russia with full weapons support. They're gaining more territory every day, and already taking better care of the people they captured than their own government ever did.
And they're still using drones for most of the heavy lifting, because NATO doesn't want their weapons used that deep inside Russia.

Putin lives in a world of yesteryear -- of the USSR or the tsarist empire. His people want and deserve a better life for themselves and their children. He is expending resources on a vanity project. His sycophants tell him what he wants to hear ... who could have imagined being the absolute ruler for 20+ years and stealing as much as possible would corrupt the technocratic former mayor of St Petersburg? Well, at least he has his palaces and special trains to carry him wherever he wants.

Well, Ukraine is using their new territory to attack Russian supply lines, so there might not be a whole lot Russia can do about it anymore. Ukraine already destroyed a few military airports, runways, and hangars, they sunk the only ferry carrying fuel into Crimea, and it looks like they're far from done.
This has been a war fought over inches, and Ukraine is working to sever most of their larger supply lines. This really only leaves the bridge into Crimea and a couple of railways as the only way move supplies into their forces in Ukraine, and from what I understand Ukraine is working to take care of them all. That bridge should be a lot easier to hit with a small, targeted drone attack once it's loaded with trucks carrying fuel.
And that's not even getting into all the other creative things Ukraine is now doing inside Russia yet. It looks like they're trying to force Putin into making a big mistake, and they'll be punishing all of Russia with a "death from a thousand small cuts" right up until their big opportunity shows up.
