It is a shame that because of injuries (mainly Lemieux's), and the fact that they played in opposite conferences (and the fact that the Penguins in the 80's were still pretty bad...so they never met in the Finals), we rarely got to see Mario and Gretzky face off against each other when Wayne was at his best in Edmonton.
Here in Pittsburgh, over the past 35 years of so, we've gotten to watch Mario, Jagr, Crosby and Malkin. So fortunate.

Murphy jumping up on this play was huge. Sure, he wasn’t the biggest offensive threat, but it gave Wayne another option and prevented the Russians from selling out to break up the passing lane to Mario. When Gretzky had the puck any wide open player became a sniper.

Just absolutely awesome pass by Wayne Gretzky to Mario Lemieux. Me being a Pens 🐧 🐧 fan just makes it all the sweeter. I actually feel Wayne made Mario even better. Right after this Rendezvous, that's when Mario won his 1st of 6 scoring titles. I actually watched this live. Dan Kelly made a terrific call too. I actually felt bad for Belosheikin here.....he had ZERO CHANCE! 'COS Mario buried it. Mario + Wayne=Pack It In Other Team

Gretzky really did help Lemieux. Early in training camp, Gretzky kind of got pissed off at Mario and took him aside. He thought he could work a little harder, had all the talent in the world , even more potential than him, something along that line. After that, Mario was officially a superstar.

Storybook finish. That rush had it in the bag. It's interesting that Lemieux could have also sealed the deal by passing it to Tocchet (#8) and he would have had an open net. He must have had a good feeling he had all the room he needed to bury it. Good choice.

Ducky wins the faceoff and Mario, with his strenght and long reach gets the puck away from the Soviets and to Gretzky's stick. So many moving parts to make this goal happen. Ducky's hook on the soviets wasn't called because it was part of our game long before the Canada Cup series. The inteligence of 99 & 66 is unparalleled in our sport. Every decision and play the created was perfection. Their ability to read of eachother was a gift from the heavens.

I loved that series and that whole tourney, and loved to see Canada raise the cup, because they were the better team, and that series may have been some of the best hockey by two of the most evenly matched and stacked teams ever assembled. Think of the guys that did not make Team Canada's roster. However if you watch closely at 1:34 of the tape Hawerchuk hooks #27 to create the space Lemieux would need to get off his shot. Just Saying. To me the Soul of Team Canada was The Messier, Gartner, Andersen line they went head to head with the USSR #1 line and did a hell of a job. Also notice Fetisov was off the ice for that goal. Game 2 double overtime was possibly the best hockey game I have ever watched.

It's my first time ever seeing the camera angle trailing the play and I find it crazy how Hawerchuk gives USSR No. 27 a full-on hook and receives no inference call. It 100% resulted in Lemieux being so wide open for the pass. Difference times I suppose haha

  • @billssportsandwrestlingchan

It was the moment that set Lemieux on the path to being a better all around player and eventually a great leader and champion, in hindsight this whole tournament did that for him.
Gretzky has said more than once that this play wouldn't work without Hawerchuk and Murphy!
The '91 Canada Cup didn't stand a chance, even if it did see the rise of the U.S. National team. And the funny thing is, those games against the U.S. were actually good solid hockey games. But when you have to follow what some have considered to be the greatest series of all-time? No chance. Not even four years later.
