  • The fire was reported at 2600 E Racine St. at 1:45 p.m., according Fire Chief Ryan Murphy. The building has 26 units but only 23 are occupied. Those 23 units were all evacuated.
"Units arrived on scene and noted heavy fire showing. Initial crews went in, checked all the apartments to make sure everybody was out and then once we started to evaluate the structure itself, all the firefighters from the interior were pulled out, and we started an exterior attack," Murphy said.
Jeremy Wu lives nearby and told 27 News he couldn't believe what he saw.
"I come outside and little bit of a fire on the side of the roof over there. And, yeah, before you know it, it's just totally engulfed," Wu said. "It kind of took a second before it really hit me."
