Personally I think I take the Fairly radical View that Bleak endings are not really of much use to society these days.
Like the point of such can often be to try and express fatalism or comment on how life can be washed away easily or is ultimately brief. Such messages can have a point but I posit what I would assume is a radical idea that General audiences don't need to be given such a point these days.
I'd almost side with the idea that we should instead be embracing almost fantastical happy joyous endings. Which directly goes against many people's belief that such Disneyesq endings are only for children, that they have no place in movies meant for adults or discussing the real world.
Yet I would argue General audiences today need to be reminded and informed that hope is a real thing. That a message challenging nihilism and the uselessness of life or the inevitability of complete societal collapse has become the radical anti-establishment kind of messaging. If anything's Society is lacking from media and movies meant to help uplift us, whereas a movie like old has a place but I don't think it's 2022. The pandemic has made us all aware of how sudden deaths can be. It's length and seemingly endless nature, while not actually truly endless feel so in a way that I think movies and media would be seen as challenging the Zeitgeist to remind us that there is a hopeful future for us and our children.

      @Sandra-hc4vo Před 2 lety

@@BladedEdge123 nihilism, absurdism etc, these are not new to our generation. stoicism also is similar too. existentialism. i think this 'bleakness,' exists when people find that there isn't gonna be a super bright happy ending. it's almost the ending you get from years of people being shown super happy endings, when they start to realize that no that isn't completely real. you said people need happy endings because it gives them hope, but what do people do when hope is damaged? when people aren't powerful enough to conquer everything that comes in their way, or societies way. I mean certainly there is a purpose to hope. I recently started watching a little bit of super hero movies (well the bleaker ones lol), but they have that sense of noble purpose and doing the right thing, and that is beautiful too. According to Sartre's absurdism (if i understand him), he says that we are left with the awareness that there is no grand purpose to life and it's that lack of purpose that leaves us in this feeling of the absurd. which people would generally do things not to feel this. And so whether you view yourself as a hero character doing good, or this bleak hopeless one at the end of the day, i don't know that it matters. it will speak to who it speaks to.

I haven't watched Old, but I have read Sandcastle. While I'm not a purist and don't mind when adaptions change things to suit the different medium, time, and context, after hearing about Old's ending, I was put off from any desire to see it. People who prefer Old for having a more bittersweet ending are valid! Sandcastle is extremely bleak and depressing and a lot of people probably feel awful after reading it. Yet for me, there's something oddly cathartic about it. No one is saved, because time comes for us all - and no matter where you're from, we're all going to the same end.

Having some characters escape feels like avoiding the thematic question. It just seemed like a cop out for a nice happy ending.

I think that's a big problem with the movie, that it tries to explore the specifics of the situation and ends up making you question things, whereas the novel skimmed over the details.
Like, if we really want to get into it, they all need to be eating and drinking near constantly to avoid dehydrating or starving to death. The women should spurting blood constantly since their time of the month is happening every few minutes.
It bothers me only because they show wounds healing in seconds and the baby dying of neglect almost immediately after birth, so they take some things more scientifically but other things they ignore entirely. Whereas the novel didn't bother with science at all so I didn't feel distracted by it.

I think what annoys me most with this film is that it is genuinely a creepy concept that consistently gets hampered because no one responses to any of this like a normal human being. Heck, even some exaggeration would be more appreciated than just basically watching aliens in human skin try to make convincing drama under such extraordinary circumstances. Like that scene with that woman and her limbs getting destroyed or the baby turning into dust should have been utterly shocking, but when everything is under such a sense of mild reaction, it just makes you wonder if you should be laughing or not. At least now we can say this is pretty much entirely on M. Night if one dislikes it since he's pretty much mostly got creative control on his films since "The Visit", so it can be completely defended by saying "studio interference" or anything like that.

I went to watch Old with my friend who is a fan of Shyamalan. Though I didn't really care for most of the movie, it was definitely the scene with Prisca and Guy reflecting on their lives as elderly people that made it worth having watched. I wish it was a short film, maybe 30 minutes, just about the family and how time speeds up and they live and die in a day, because that would be so bittersweet and tragic. And although Sandcastles' ending sounds more sharp and fitting, I think there is also an element of horror in how Maddox and Trent are going to have to live with the events of what happened, being older than their aunt, who will now take care of them, and never having the lives they would have wanted to live, and then a couple of years after the events of the movie, one or both of them will probably commit suicide due to the trauma.

    M. Night Shyamalan is a wonderfully frustrating filmmaker and Old showed him at his best and worst. I love his style of cinematography because I am a sucker for long takes. Old had a great premise for a supernatural thriller and Shyamalan does work a lot better when making smaller-scale stories. The birth scene was wonderfully horrific. But Shyamalan has no understanding of how to write dialogue which resulted in the actors giving some wooden performances. Plus the idea of two characters who were mentally six having sex and having a baby was really icky.

"Our Town" is kind of like the foil to OLD. It's not a movie, but there is a filmed version of the play on PBS that I think can be found on CZcams.
It also explores the themes of things like time, death, life, and appreciating every moment that you can. It comes to the forefront in Act III, where Emily, the protagonist discovers that she has died in childbirth, when her spirit appears in the graveyard with the rest of her relatives/townspeople. She has the ability to pick one moment from her life that she can choose to revisit, even though she is advised against doing so, but she insists, so she picks the simple moment of her eating breakfast with her family. Not a birthday party, not her wedding day, just a simple time that you barely even think about because it happens every day.
Needless to say, Emily is heartbroken and distraught when she realizes just how much time is being wasted. Her parents are rushing past each other, no one sits down to speak with each other at breakfast. She says, "It all goes by so fast, we don't even have time to look at each other!"
And another character tells her, "That's what it was to be alive. To move about in a cloud of ignorance; to go up and down trampling on the feelings of those... of those about you. To spend and waste time as though you had a million years. To be always at the mercy of one self-centered passion or another. Now you know - that's the happy existence you wanted to go back to. Ignorance and blindness."
It's extremely depressing. But eye opening. It's a lot different from the usual "appreciate life" messages that you see in other works of media.

Life may sometimes be as pleasant as sand in your bathing suit and time may move way faster than we think, but please don't be afraid to live! The only one who doesn't die peacefully is the baby who is the next generation left to fend for themselves in this confusing mess we call life. Maybe she will be able to escape the beach, maybe not. Sandcastle is very "French" and as such follows certain symbols like a pig to slop.
The author has cited climate change and a family anecdote about everyone in their train car going to a concentration camp arguing with one another as the main theme and inspiration.
As a result, the sandcastle imagery is more likely a reference to the parable comparing the house-building techniques of wise and foolish men.

I actually did like this movie (nauseating cinematography aside), and am surprised everyone seems to regard it as being horrible. I've come to actually respect Shyamalan as a filmmaker, just because he's willing to do things that are different and weird, even if it seems everyone regards him as a hack. Look at it this way: it's easy to keep making original films when you're Quentin Tarantino and everyone loves everything you do, but to keep making films when you've become a critical punching bag takes guts.

Say what one will about Shyamalan's previous films, but he obviously does know his way around a camera, so there's no doubt it's a stylistic choice. I eventually decided he was trying to keep the focus on the rock formations in the background, as they're basically the villains of the film, but the end result is that it's still kind of nauseating, and probably played no small part in why people didn't like the film.

i was hesitant to watch this movie for one major reason. i feel like the comic portrayed the children aging well. while they still had a childlike sense of curiosity they did mentally age and mature otherwise, which was an interesting point as we often force ourselves to stifle our “childlike” joys and curiosities in order to appear more adult. the adults casually and openly explain sex and aging to the kids and they understand it as it’s only natural. however i was worried that the movie wouldn’t quite have the same nuance and would just be like “these ppl who are mentally 5 year olds just had sex!” which is really just not smth i’m interested in watching. so for those of u who have seen the movie, which one is it like? is it worth a watch?

    • @davidbjacobs3598
      @davidbjacobs3598 Před 2 lety +3

Kinda ambiguous. They're still somewhat childlike, but there's also kind of a sense of maturity as their physical bodies age (along with the chemicals that make up our biology). So maybe they're aged but emotionally immature since their lives have been a single day, or maybe they're children who appear slightly mature because of how their bodies have altered. I think they literally ask this question at some point, but don't answer it.
I'd give it a watch, make up your own mind.

For me, Soho was an overall great watch, but my biggest criticism is that not enough time was spent with Ellie seeing/embracing the beauty of the 60's before its cracks started to show. I was so surprised by how fast the movie ended up going through that part. That "Alice in Wonderland" thrill should've lasted longer, with Ellie soon preferring to live Sandie's life than her own, before coming to terms with how tragically effed up it was. And after letting the movie sit with me a while, I'm kind of divided about that ending. On the one hand, I appreciate Edgar Wright going against general expectation by having Sandie survive the ordeal, and I can see how the trauma she endured would cause her to be dead-set against having men anywhere in her vicinity, but I wasn't really a fan of her essentially being revealed as a mass murderer, or her sudden decision to kill Ellie before suddenly changing her mind again. That whole part felt over-the-top & inconsistent to me.

Your age catches up with you and you don't even notice it. The kids still maintained their innocence while changing bodily and they hardly seemed to notice because they live in the moment. How many of us, in our obsession with time and death, actually stopped to notice ourselves growing old? We don't. We don't until one random day, we look in the mirror and notice that extra brow wrinkle, or the jawline disappearing from sagging jowls, or the back suddenly becoming angry when we bend over.

Even when the woman with epilepsy wanted to get to her sister, she stressed, "she's a therapist" as if that's important information.

Shyamalan always me the vibe of someone I would run into in a creative writing class in middle school, mature enough to want to explore the deeper and darker facets of existence but without the life experience to really present those ideas in a way that won't make his teacher giggle hysterically while grading his assignments. I think he can definitely be a bit too "up his own ass" - like when he self-inserted as a character in "Lady in the Water," in the form of a humble writer whose book is prophesized to change the world, but would lead to his death because his ideas are just SO radical.
Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but I do agree that something had to change with the ending, though I'm a bit biased as I have very little patience for navel gazing nihilism. Originally the baby survives but is left to build sandcastles alone after everyone else croaks; I could see a couple ways to approach the scene without glorifying the misery of it all, or if you were willing to embrace a little corniness you could have the child escape - anything other than pulling an "Umbrella Corporation" subplot out of your ear at the last minute.

I love that you talked abou the cinematography, because I loved the way this movie was shot and I didn't see a single person talking about it. Can't wait for your video on Last Night in Soho which was also my favorite of the year

Another director I've thought about helming this movie is Gasper Noe. Instead of bogging the movie down with explanations and pretention, I think he would've focused more on the sheer terror that the characters would be going through. An approach similar to Climax where the camera flows inbetween characters unable to escape the impending doom would've made for a much more frightening experience. Noe has proven himself to be capable handling softer and intelligent scenes so the film could still explore different perspectives on the situation and people contemplating their mortality. Also I think he would've handled the absurdity and taboo topics in the movie more effectively since all his movies explore such ideas

I watched old recently and I think about it a lot. I liked the exploration of time and mortality. I really enjoyed your analysis! Also I like that you included more face time in your video

I wish he hadn't added the science ending to the film. Stand-alone stories that suggest the world still holds monsters and unknown natural forces we can never control or understand or even pin down not only provide fear and deep conversations, but also lend a renewed sense of wonder and adventure to the world, like the old horror tales from the 17-1800's, or the Sci-Fi stories from the 30's through 50's.

great video! i saw that this movie didn't do well, so i enjoyed hearing your opinion on it. (also, yeah hearing that we may have to wait two years for the next season of succession is the scariest thing i've heard in a while...)

I appreciate that you took the time to analyze Shyamalan's choices. I feel like a lot of people dismiss his directing as bad because well Shyamalan, and while it's true that his stuff often doesn't work I think it's important to consider that he was trying to convey something with the e.g. the weird framing. Great video as always, looking forward to the next one!

This is a missed opportunity for a true body horror film. I’d love to see Brandon Cronenberg turn it into a surreal nightmare.

What a lovely take on a film I didn't really think twice about. When the first preview showed before a movie that I was seeing with my mate I turned and said that looks very interesting just like anyone else probably did. Later on as I saw the preview open up more scenes and more of the plot points I still had just as much intrigue because it was still left pretty ambiguous. After watching the movie I realized that there were stuff that couldn't really be done in a regular setting sort of like what you remarked about in regards to how this should have been like a cronenberg or you know even loved craft or something because with it just being a literal movie seeing things that you know would only be considered just sped up in life as opposed to happening you know over time I really would have loved to see some special effects type aging if that makes sense. However I really do love the way you ended this video and regarded the sandcastle story and the picture ( movie) as one product. I'm so glad I found your channel I've been binging like crazy ☺️

I hate thinking about time, I can’t help but feel like whenever I’m not enjoying life that I’m wasting time. It’s time that I’ll never ever get back, working jobs I hate, even going to school. I play guitar and video games in my free time, but really I don’t know what I want to do with my time. But I feel suffocated by other things in life, so much so that I don’t have the energy to figure out how I want to spend my time. It’s a constant cycle
