Lots of folks complaining that they finished the game already. I think the main campaign is just a bonus to the game. I've played for about 15 hours so far and I'm still running around New Atlantis trying to find those faulty Power switch breakers. And that rogue robot that came charging out of that poor dudes apartment because he tried to rip off the seller by not paying for it. Wow!

I am nearly 60 and the last time I purchased a game was over 20 years ago. So the learning curve, for me, is almost vertical at this point so any help, like this, is appreciated. For me the hardest part is remembering which keys and buttons to press. I have never used an XBox controller before and, although I am playing it on my PC, I have already found that using a controller has a distinct advantage over using the keyboard for things like flying. But, all that said, I am having a complete ball playing this game.

Great to hear. The only piece of advice I’d give you is not to rush yourself learning niche controls, every inch of the maps, or obsessing over skills or outposts/ship building. Just do what you feel like doing and are comfortable with, and every now and then when you’re looking for something new, that’s the time to branch out a little bit.
There’s no rush in this game. The learning curve was overwhelming for _me,_ and I’ve been playing Bethesda games since I was a teenager. Take your time and enjoy the little things as you go; you’ll figure out the more advanced stuff when you’re ready for it, and you’ll be way less likely to burn out in the meantime.
That’s really something I wish someone had told me as much as it is advice to you, but either way, I’m glad you’re enjoying the game. Have a good one.

If you are playing on normal difficulty, just know that the skills are basically a bonus and you could beat the game just fine without them. Starship may control a bit better with a controller, but shooting is actually easier with MKB so you could even leave controller plugged in and use it whenever you board your ship.

  • @TB-wvvvw
    @TB-wvvvw Před rokem +38

Just one detail, in the Piloting skill, thrusters aren't a "boost of speed"; thrusters allow movement of the ship up, down, and to the side by holding space while touching WASD or arrow keys (PC). This is separate from ordinary turning, which rotates the ship. You do a boost, which is extra thrust from the engines that helps to evade missiles, with the LShift key.

This is because on a rocket, 'thrusters' are small valves separate from the rocket engines that use compressed gas to change the orientation of the vehicle. In the game, you can't use thrusters at all without level 1 of the Piloting Skill.

I’d switch that for stealth. Stealth isn’t really important over the easier persuasion

  • @chriss6855
    @chriss6855 Před rokem +17

Security - I just got it to level 3 as I didn't find the 4th level to be worth it over other options.
Boost Pack - I played around with it on a save but ultimately reverted it because it wasn't all that useful or at least not over other options.
Medicine - Once you get better armor, healing becomes less of an issue and healing kits or plentiful.
Weight Lifting - This is useful if you want to haul items to sell. It's one that I did max out.
Piloting - I maxed it simply to gain access to the best ships.
Targeting Control Systems - I'm on the fence with this one. I only found it useful in situations where I'm fighting 4+ ships at the same time when time is important.
Stealth - This is a very important skill if you plan to steal/pickpocket. I didn't use it for the attack bonus as I just rush through everything.
Gymnastics - I avoided as I saw no point is investing anything into it.
Wellness - I maxed this one as health is important.
Planetary Habituation - I'd play around with outposts first and see if it's something you'd enjoy playing. I personally avoided this one as there was nothing that I could get from this content that I couldn't get elsewhere.
Ballistics - I took this to level 3 and I believe I maxed Rifles. The ammunition for these weapons is just plentiful. You may have to resort to buying ammunition for the other weapons.
Demolitions - I largely ignored this as I was killing everything quick enough with just regular weapons.
Rapid Reloading - I think I just invested into the 1st tier only.
With all Bethesda games, you can quickly reach a point where all enemies hardly hurt you and you do enough damage that you can just rush through and kill everything. I can clear most "dungeons" in about 10 minutes and I spend another 10-15 looking for perk/skill magazines. I reach this at about 10 hours in and have so far been able to maintain this as I level through acquiring better gear.
Also do not invest into persuasion. You can just save beforehand and keep reloading until you pass the check.

After 60 hours I think if you spec into weapon crafting/modding then you don’t really need to spec into skills that boost damage for specific weapons. I’m playing on very hard and I have no weapon skills, but I can put good mods on my guns and I never have a problem in combat even against much higher level enemies. Likewise if you choose damage skills, you don’t really need modding/crafting skills for weapons as you find tons of modded ones from enemies and exploring. Just my opinion.

I think the most important skills are the ones that support your playstyle. I see so many people recommend stealth, but to me that's slow and boring. I would rather explore and do that kind of slow content. And that's what's important, level the things you focus on, if you run around and explore, fitness and boost pack is a must. So is scanner and astrophysics, especially if you do survey missions and sell the data. Just an example though.

    A couple things....
-Don't forget you can have your companion help you carry the items you pick up. This is a game changer because it essentially doubles your carry capacity. Also you can upgrade ships to hold a TON of items (I have my ships carry capacity at 850 and I'm a level 12). Finally you can sell the items you put in your ship to merchants, making it even easier to sell. Sure, it's tedious giving your companion stuff you can't carry (thanks Bethesda), but you only get skill points as you level up so it takes time to earn them. You're checking every nook and cranny for digipicks and safes anyway, it's not that bad handing Barrett the seven pound pack you just picked up.
-Save those skill points for one rank Stealth and four ranks in Theft. Pickpocketing (and just stealing in general) will make you a TON of money stealing credits, weapons, etc. Rank One stealth tells you when you're hidden or detected when you're crouched, that along is huge for stealing (aka making money and getting better stuff). Also bring Alejandra along with you, she really appreciates your sleight of hand skills.

I agree with 1,2 but 3 medicine is not needed, if you are having problems at low level try not to run into the enemy without a weapon and punching them. Maybe try a gun and using cover, I never had a problem with my health as you can sleep in a bed for 1 hour to get full health and use food you collect as well as the 3 types of medpacks so do not get that skill.
Option 4 is also not needed if you do not mind not getting achievements as you can simply use a console command to make your carry weight 8000 or more which means you can loot everything and never have to worry about space but if you(for some reason) like getting achievements then sure get it but 100kg is not much and I would rather pick up everything.
Option 5 piloting: Never had a problem with moving the ship but getting a better ships later is going to be good so not important to start but handy later.
Option 6 Targeting: I have that one and yes its a must not only to help you target systems but you can knock out their engines and steal their ship.
Option 7: Stealth: Yup love stealth and handy later when you get more damage from stealth.
Option 8 and 9: Not had problems moving about so not that handy and I have yet to build a base because I carry everything with me and but is handy if you like building a base but tbh get it later.
Option 10 ballistics: Sure its good but do you need it? No, I can kill a terramorph with no problems but if you have nothing else to skill up damage is handy but you dont need it and TBH I am playing on hard and kill most enemy in a few shots.
Option 11 demolitions: Never uses a grenade
Option 12 rapid reload: Again never had a problem killing things so why bother.
What I would suggest is getting the skills needed to mod your weapons as when you find a nice one you can mod it the way you like, all in all pick the skills to suit your play style as I am sure some nutter will have picked cooking because they like to cook even though it's rubbish.

Thrusters are a HUGE part of effective combat piloting, allowing you to coast in one direction at the last speed you got up to, while turning your ship around and facing your enemies and blasting away at them while heading in the opposite direction, forcing them to chase you down instead of engaging in direct ship to ship dogfights.

FYI explosive legendary weapons in this game are more amazing than Fallout 4 or 76s explosive weapons. In Starfield the bullets randomly switch to explosive as you fire so automatic weapons are excellent, and the explosions themselves are insanely powerful. I haven’t tested whether demolition perks boost the explosive damage but I assume they do. Even without demo the explosions decimate enemies.
Edit) the explosive legendary effect is powerful enough to severely injure you if you’re too close! Be careful!
Edit 2) Ranking up Demolition perks increases the damage of the Legendary explosive effect on weapons! Each time the explosive effect happens your shot is doing double damage basically, for example my rifle the bullet does 50 damage and the explosion does an additional 50. Then when you rank up Demolition that increases the explosive damage even further.

Also there are mods available on some weapons like the A99 rifle that give you explosive rounds, I haven’t tested them yet because I don’t have the required crafting level but I’m curious how that will work on a weapon that has the legendary explosive effect.

    • @nerdoutreachprogram5358
      @nerdoutreachprogram5358 Před rokem +2

@@HackTheMinotaur tested and confirmed, Demolition perk increases the damage of explosive rounds from the explosive legendary effect! For the rifle I’m using, an explosive Beowulf, the damage per shot from the regular round is 50, when the explosive effect happens, it’s another 50 - after increasing Demolition to rank 2 the explosive damage increased to 63. So essentially each time the explosive round goes off it’s double damage (before demolition perks), then with rank 2 of demolition you’re getting a little bit more explosive damage and slightly more than double damage total. I’m gonna test the damage whenever I can rank up Demolition again - and once I am able to unlock the explosive mod for the weapons that have it available I’ll test it too and get back to you.

But gun combat is very easy and ive never died 60 hours in and there is zero incentive to try to stealth areas when you can eaily breeze through. The hardest part is deciding what loot to carry lol. Im not saying it needs to be dark souls difficulty but it should be as difficult as most other standard triple A open world shooters. It feels like they wanted to cater to mindless gamers and people who are really bad at games, or new to gaming. Cuz in that sense its very accessible cuz literally anyone could do it. My grandma whose never played a game in her life could probably clear areas without dying if i showed her how to play. But i think thats what they were going for. Obviously that was alil bit of an exaggeration tho. But seriously the gunplay could be so mucb fun if it was harder n the enemies were better. The things keeping me playing is definetly the ship building, quests/dialogue, likable characters/npcs. And the freedom and roleplaying elements. But alot of the game is spent in combat and it would really elevate the game if that combat was more of a challenge.

Good list! I like to unlock combat skills first cause I’m playing on very hard 🙂

All sounds great if you can find the skill points to get that stuff 🤔

    Very Combat focused ....
If you are playing to shoot or blow up everything that moves then that is not a bad build. my guy is a little less predictable and interesting

Counter to what hes saying ive felt zero need to spec into any combat skills. That skill tree is inferior to all the others because combat is extremly easy in this game. Space combat can be challanging so specing into tech is important.

So I don’t plan to do NG+. Can anyone she’d light on XP gains. Do you gain more XP while at higher lvls or is XP tied to difficulty?
Also I’m at lvl 40ish and have been raided by the starborn at constellation. Can I continue getting more powers or are new powers tied to NG+?

I may take lockpicking in a few playthroughs time but it never prevents progress and the loot is rarely worth the time. Weight lifting, I won't take again...we do it for loot, which means we mostly do it for money...but we get more than enough money...by all means, fill yourself up, but going too far is grief for no benefit...concentrating on loot and how much I can carry and sell seriously negatively impacted the first 20 hours of playing...and I've barely spent any of it. The ship ones - you don't need unless you care about the space aspects...I used a fraction of my useless money to upgrade the reactor, shields and switch my weapons to particle...on the starter ship...I didn't buy storage space and I wipe the floor with everything so far. If space combat becomes a thing, I'll reconsider...but so far it seems very, very optional...and therefore, not remotely worth an early skill point. For me the essentials are health, medpack and whatever weapons you fancy...this is basically because there's a lot of ground fighting that can't realistically be avoided...I'm tempted to experiment more with stealth because as it stands, every enemy knows you're there instantly, and they all have great aim...I'm interested in using stealth to mitigate some of this...however, don't want to turn it in to a "I win", so would rather become more tanky than have no challenge at all. I'm not saying I won't get any of the other skills...but for me it'll be later game and what I fancy doing to expand the game...base/ship building...crafting. I feel like I should take persuation...but I seem to have passed every encounter needing it, so...in summary - health and weapons are needed...everything else is roleplaying.

I agree about the loot and weight stuff. If the game is gonna give you more than enough money through quests, then what's the point of picking up a bunch of loot and worrying about weight and all that to sell it later?
I think I'll just end up grabbing cash, digipicks and ammo as, the cash is just right there, and they all weigh nothing.
That said, the first things I did was max commerce and security. Commerce because it's hella easy and when do sell things i wast the best deal. I also enjoy the lock picking mini game and I do like comparing armor and weapons to my own. So I'll still open locked boxes, etc, I just won't take the stuff unless it's better than what I have.

So far I'm putting all my skills into ship combat, because that's the only part of the game that has real difficulty. Get your thrusters to rank 4 asap

Talk to her and either ask her to wait or tell her to part ways. When she first joins you there is a mission you need to complete before she can leave your party

I’ve found that there’s plenty of valuable loot in this game without picking difficult locks. I feel that lockpicking was more important in previous Bethesda titles

Now that I'm in the late game, I agree. All lockpicking does in this game is provide with you more (and usually fairly good) auto generated loot. There is nothing of true significance behind a locked door in this game.
