Nivin and fafa are really the best performers in malayalam cinema currently. 🔥
    So freaking versatile

I couldn't agree more. From what I've seen, they are prominent and prolific voices of their generation.

It's lived in my head for weeks. There's a power and subtlety on display that is nothing short of masterful.

Nivin's rom-coms were just pure nostalgia. And then comes Moothon. It just opened my mind and dropped my jaw 😂
And Geethu Mohandas was such a revelation too! Malayalam has a lot of tasteful, subtle, yet hard-hitting movies. But each time a mainstream actor does such a well executed cross-over, my heart smiles.
Beautiful discussion guys. And yes, I also couldn't help but be reminded of Dickens.

Thanks for taking the time to check out our discussion and I'm glad you enjoyed it! This is honestly our first real look at Nivin and wow.. I mean he's just incredible. Can't wait to check out some of his comedies soon as well. I'm actually looking forward to checking out more of Geethu Mohandas as well. Loved her style of direction. As you mentioned, hard hitting but subtle at the same time!

This was such a 180 in Nivin's acting career. We knew him as a chocolate romantic hero and then he did this movie and it blew my mind. He is in kind of a slump right now, wishing for his comeback.

I didn't actually know he had that reputation before this movie, it makes this performance even more incredible. Yeah I'm really hoping for something special from him soon.

Cinematographer Rajeev Ravi is husband of Geetu. He was dop of many hindi movies ( gangs of wasepur etc) malayalam thondimuthalum ..... also directed Annayum Rasoolum( Fafa) kammattipadam( DQ) Thuramukham (Nivin) Nivin gained weight for movies set in 1970s 80s (bulky but not jim body.) So the self troll as Nitin Molly and the promos of Malayali from India.

    Oh man. Moothon.
    This film.
It has haunted me even though I saw this months ago. Moothon (The Elder) and Ee.Ma.Yau. both struck me to my core. Ee.Ma.Yau. was a grueling but ultimately reconstructive experience for me. Moothon though. Oh man.
It was only after watching a Toronto Film Festival panel discussion with Geetu Mohandas and the cast (here on YT…worth hunting down) that I could pull myself back together from the bleak place this film left me in.
So happy you all chose to see before seeing Malayalee from India as it shows the range Nivin Pauli is capable of. Also great to see you & Doug give it the time as there is so much to unpack: language as a barrier (significant that Ameer is mute), gender as a construct, the persistence of shame, desire & violence…not to mention even the technical artistry (performance, cinematography, soundtrack). GM does a profound job in writing and bringing this all to life…
Interesting Doug’s comparison to Dickens (particularly David Copperfield)…though not sure GM had that in mind when she workshopped the screenplay at Sundance.
The love between Ameer & Akbar was so honest & innocent & raw…probably the most beautiful depiction of queer love I’ve seen not just in Indian cinema (which is rare to begin with, with Vijay Sethupathi’s character storyline in Super Deluxe providing another high point) but in global cinema at large (thank you, Doug, for mentioning Moonlight). …and then it’s over so quickly, which heightens the loss. …and suddenly the present existence of Bhai clicks. I get it why he flips to the basest criminal world as his religious life was part of the reason that he didn’t end up with Ameer. He has become the living dead…If only he could have known himself better as Akbar to flee with Ameer…
As I was watching it I knew this would not have a happy ending. I assumed Akbar/Bhai would die but what truly devastated me was that EVERYTHING is lost in the end: Mulla being sold off with no idea in the end that Bhai was Akbar. … there’s no reconciliation, no closure…his sacrificed life meaninglessly snuffed out
My only criticism with the film was the oddly pat ending of Mulla. The smile confused me. Somehow I think she would be much more traumatized than what is conveyed by the ending. I understand that it was only a moment of joy in recognition of an old friend but it seems tonally out of sync with the rest of the film.
Recommendation: instead of hunting down a Nivin Pauly film what about viewing Dijo Jose Antony’s Queen (2018) or Geetu Mohandas’ Liar’s Dice (2013).
