- Charlie Shavers shared with Harry James, the ability to play emotionally and with unsurpassed technique at the same time.
This version of Stardust, comes from a Keynote session in 1944 with Earl Hines. Also featured is the great under appreciated alto saxophonist Tab Smith.
Charlie shines in both his solos. He manages to interject licks that he later repeated during the famous "Just Jazz" concert with Lionel Hampton.
Charlie Shavers should be recognized as one of a handful of jazz trumpeters who transcended styles, remaining relevant today!
Even with no lyrics, the sound of melancholy loss, which the song is about, comes through in the Trumpet Solo!
One of my favourite trumpet players of all times!! And this version of stardust is outstanding!!!
One of my favorite too !!!
These videos give us chances to hear great musicians who had becomes obscure over time.
He was playing Ben Webster on another great video
GREAT post!
he's got great talent for sure, never heard anyone like him
One of my favorite records growing up. A Keynote 12 incher..... It broke a few decades a go....
Stardust was the first Stairway to Heaven except Stardust when performed by different artists becomes an entirely new piece of music.
Charlie Shavers has one of , if not the the most "voice -like" trumpet techniques you'll find.
The overall breath, tone, and chromatic control, he has is astounding.
And that effortless vibrato, = good stuff.
He reminds me of Harry James, who once remarked "I sing through my horn."
i Was listening to a legend trumpetist. Thanks for uploading
Nice!
Just discovered this superb recording of the wonderful Stardust and I can't believe nobody's ever taken the time to thank you for it.
Charlie great as always. Lovely man
Check out shavers “ summertime “ on the Gershwin Shavers and Strings album- then you get a real demo of his genius- make sure it’s that version and not his first
Un des plus grands trompettistes, technique incroyable et sensibilité
Génial !
C'est vrai, mon ami!
SELMER1947:
Vraiment grand!
incredibly played music
what a virtuoso, his style was pre bebop.
Mr. Shavers along with Pops the two greatest trumpeters ever.
+EXQUISITESOUNDS and Clark Terry the third...?
True "dhat" - along with Roy Eldridge.
wyndhl eodumegwu and Bix!
Wayne Jones:
Yeah! Sad he died so young; 29-years?
Bix lives! [RIP!]
wyndhl eodumegwu His birthday is actually coming up! And station WKCR in NYC(Fordham Univ. )89.9 does 24 hrs. of major contributors to jazz, Bix included, on their birthdays!
Satchmo gets TWO days since it was thought he was born July 4 instead of the actual date, Aug. 4. Have to see if CS is so honored!
I've just tried a used Besson cornet, silver, offered for 250 Swiss Francs in our Swiss mountain village second hand shop. Excellent deal. But trumpet is only my third instrument, I'm a clarinetist. When I hear people like Shavers play I feel that I'm not made for trumpet. I envy people with such lips.
Yes yes. He could sing and speak tru his horn.
New to Mr. Shavers......time for Research, as I am like to do for new discoveries of mine. It started with Glenn Miller when I played trombone in grade school, 1970s!!
Charlie Shavers mugged like Diz with the cheeks?! Such a sound!!
Got this record on the tomo(? I believe it is called) german record label.
3:25 My god
Che meraviglia!
Er war das meist unterschätzte ,größte Jazz Trumpet Talent aller Zeiten ,wer das nicht hört hat keine Ahnung .
Unschlagbar gut
No one can surpass The Maestro Harry James. One may only come close, and Charlie Shavers was one of the foremost virtuosos to be spoken of in the same breath.
Harry James was a good trumpet who often plays commercial music. As for Jazz music, Armstrong, Charlie Shavers, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy, Clifford Brown, Clark Terry, Fats Navarro... were by far better than him
SELMER1947: I'm laughing out loud. It's all a matter of taste.................or, in your case, a lack of it.
Nothing to reply to a clueless
SELMER1947: You started to say 'Nothing to reply to a clueless.........' Am I keeping you awake? Stand down from Red Alert, shut up, and enjoy Harry's music.................and Charlie's, too.
Very difficult to enjoy music in my case with a "lack of taste"...but I'm trying man.... fortunately I met you here to led me the good way............Thanks a lot man and peace on you, yeah
Hi chuck! I like very much Charlie shavers! Did you remember me from Brazil?
sylas xavier Sure Sylas! Charlie was great!
Still have problems with that piano solo, as though the player can't find the right tempo or the right key.
