Konaev is a city in Kazakhstan, until May 2022 it was called Kapshagay, or Kapchagay, and from June 8, 2022 it became the administrative center of the Almaty region within its new borders (after the newly formed Zhetysu region was separated from this region). The city is located in the south of the country, on the banks of the Kapshagay reservoir, built on the Ili River, 56 km. from Almaty. The city has beaches and recreation areas on the banks of the reservoir, as well as the largest gambling zone in the republic.
Initially, the city was planned to be called Novoiliysk, the name indicated that the inhabitants of the village of Iliysk were resettled in the new village, which in 1938 was renamed Ili, and flooded with the waters of the new reservoir. Novoiliysk was renamed Kapchagai by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR dated July 9, 1970. From the Kazakh language Kapshagay is translated as "narrow gorge" or "compressed land". On May 3, 2022, the city was renamed Konaev (kaz. Konaev) in memory of Dinmukhamed Kunaev, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, the de facto leader of the Kazakh SSR from 1960 to 1986.
During the years of Soviet power, an industrial infrastructure was created in the city and its environs, factories were put into operation: porcelain, reinforced concrete structures, high-precision instruments; elevator, bakeries, butter factories, fish processing complex.
In the late 1980s, the 751st separate engineer battalion of the 17th Army Corps of the USSR Armed Forces was stationed in the city.
With the collapse of the USSR, state factories and enterprises were sold by the state under a privatization program into private hands and subsequently ceased to exist.
In 1998, the villages of Zarechnoye and Shengeldy, together with rural districts, became subordinate to the city akimat.
Since the mid-2000s, the banks of the Kapchagay reservoir, which are a water protection zone, began to be actively built up for private mini-motels and cafes, and there are practically no free public beaches for recreation. Due to the development of the coastal water protection zone, the waters of the reservoir are polluted with sewage waste.
With the transfer of the regional center from Taldykorgan to Konaev, funding for the city has increased, land and real estate prices have risen, infrastructure is improving in the city and prospects for growth and development have appeared.
