- From a replay of Car & Track on the old SPEED channel, the Western 500 at Riverside International Raceway held on January 20th and 26th 1974. The race began on Sunday January 20th. Rain began falling on lap 60 and the race was red flagged on lap 63 (of 191) . The race resumed on the following Saturday January 26th.
That Matador was a sharp car on the track. I may be the only one who thinks that (at least in my family). Thanks for the video.
No your not, I always liked the matador, Clean Lines.
Awsome matadors!!!
them matadors looked great
People can make fun of the Matador in street trim all they want, but I agree with you. Classic AMC paint scheme carried over from Trans Am made it look fantastic.
We got 3 of em.
One even in factory condition 73miles on it from moving it left to right in the garage.
2 of em with the 360 and one with the 304
They say the 70's was the malaise era of automobile styling. Well they sure made for the best looking stock cars after the aero cars were chased off the scene.
Such a great track! High speeds and room to pass! This was a drivers track. Such a shame it’s gone.
"Cale is out in front, Smilin' and runnin' like he's got a trunk fulla' Booze!!!"😆
LOL..Classic Bud Lindemann! Thanks for watching!
No stages, no competition yellows just real racing. And each manufacturer had its own look. We had it great in the days before……
I was at this race as a kid, great memories.
Thank you so much for posting this!! I was there (the first Sunday), 7 1/2 years old. Riverside was an absolute jewel!! The cars were so much louder than today. I remember when we went to Riverside, my ears would be ringing all day at school on Monday. There was nothing like this spectacle. The best road course ever created.
I was there in 1993 but the racetrack was defunct we walked a lap that night with a case of beer, they cut 50 yard pieces of the track sos people wouldnt race it, they left the high banks thats when I realized where I was, then the grandstand still had most of the name. RIVERSIDE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY.
Reminds me of a night at the local racetrack. Beautiful.
I was present that day. You did not show King Richard short cutting the esses. No worries, thanks for the memories. Keep up the good work with your vintage films.
Everyone thinks Earnhardt came up with that.
That Riverside Ca. Racetrack is one hell of a lap.
This track and these cars seem like a hard race to run! The 80s cars look fun here too!
I believe that for many years, this was the first race of the NASCAR Cup season.
I saw several races there as a kid. NASCAR real races wit actual left and right turns, esses and elevation changes.
I probably went to this race as a kid.
What an Epic era !!!
Build a Riverside Raceway anywhere and they will come.
I love that fans (past, present, and future) enjoy these wonderful old races when NASCAR was a pure Motorsports racing and when it was evolving by popularity. However, the only problem I have about NASCAR back then was less road course races. Personally, I wish NASCAR had a lot of road courses back then like this year and moving forward
It was a very different era. Domestic road racing was largely the domain of the SCCA during that time. The Trans-Am series filled that void for American Muscle cars on road courses. Sadly, very little footage of Trans-Am in that era exists. You can see some of it here czcams.com/video/21Rc8AhuBSY/video.html
NASCAR and USAC both had their ladder system fully rooted in the local dirt ovals. NASCAR's Modifed and Sportsman divisions were the path to Cup in the Southeast and USAC's Midgets and Sprints performed the same function in the Midwest. The progression from dirt ovals to paved speedways and "super-speedways" was not limited to drivers. Many tracks began as dirt ovals that were then paved and in some cases lengthened and paved. By the 1970's many of the owners and promoters of these facilities had long established relationships with Bill France (and Tony Hulman in USAC).
Thanks for watching and your interest in the history of the sport.

So, you don't have the 1974 Phoenix 150 USAC Champ Car race that I requested a while back, I assume?
I do...I have the Car & Track coverage of the Phoenix 150 and an audio file from the Bobby Ball 150. I will be posting both in the future. I need to re-format the video (currently VOB file) and will post in the near future. I will work on cleaning the audio from the Bobby Ball race as well and get that posted.

Just wanna thank both of you for the vintage racing footage you've provided.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 Glad you enjoy it. Been on bit of a hiatus lately. Need to update my computer equipment but with the cost of everything sky high, we have been focused on other projects. Maybe later this year 🤞... Cheers 🥂
This is racing doesn't even compare to today's circus
Alison had tranmission problems
.....how ironic

Today (2023), NASCAR has a Cup series race in Southern California, the Los Angeles "400" on the oval track in Fontana.
But the future of that race is uncertain.
I heard that around twenty years ago, NASCAR had a street race in Los Angeles for one of their regional divisions.
Might NASCAR replace the Los Angeles "400" with a Cup series race through the streets of Los Angeles?
It's being torn up right now 😢
