  • Judaculla was an ancient Cherokee spirit being and giant. He ruled in western North Carolina in the traditional Cherokee homeland. Once while chasing some hunters, when he jumped to the ground, his hand hit a rock. You can still see the print on Judaculla Rock. He held court in a cave near the top of a mountain. This is called the Devil's Courthouse. Even if you do not believe is these Cherokee legends, the rock has some amazing designs. Devil's Courthouse has some beautiful views of the southern Appalachia Mountains. Errata: It is the Parker family which set aside the land the rock is on. I got it right once and then said 'Price' later. - - Travels with Phil copyrighted by Phil Konstantin -

Great video :) I did a painting inspired by the Great Balsam mountains, and the mythical peoples who once travelled those lands. My art is all about reconnecting to the ancient past, where nature is our temple of worship, we connect with the great Creator in the wild landscapes, and the Legendary mystical beings who we share these places with. Tsul'Kalu has a place in this new video I'm making :D I shared the art in my recent videos for anyone interested in the mystical mountain ranges of Western North Carolina. It's truly an honor to explore these places, their ancient tribal history deserves to be heard and I'm so grateful for you sharing it, Phil :)

How did it dig a character into a stone!
    The view is wonderful!

NO one knows for sure how the characters were made. Legend says Judaculla used his hand, fingernails, etc. Since soapstone is not as hard as other rocks, people could have used rocks to carve the patterns. Antlers could have been used.

Such a wild stone to see in person! Any other places near Sylva that you recommend to explore? Just subbed!

There are several waterfalls & good hikes in the area around Sylva. The train that wrecked for the movie "The Fugitive" is rusting there. It's small, but there is a Museum for House Cats there, as well as a motorcycle museum.

I was up there back in 2003. David Bald Eagle invited me up to visit his ranch and to the powwow in Eagle Butte. I liked the area. Although, I can't say I'd want to be there in the winter. Toooo cold.
