Before Dive Talk, I used to think diving was for crazy people with a death wish. It's amazing what you learn with this channel. Thank you, guys!
It's not a death wish if you enjoy diving and know what you are doing.....trust me, you don't know what you are missing! I was certified back in 1986 by Scuba Schools International through Scuba Hut in Glen Burnie MD, and I loved every second of it! I haven't been diving in quite a while, but I can tell you that I miss it very much, I would love to get back in the water and dive again! You should try it, but only if you are comfortable in the water and you get trained properly by professionals. If you do ever try it and you get certified, then remember this, you should never panic, because if you panic, then it could get you killed, so ALWAYS try to remain calm at all times when diving, I can't stress this enough!
@Roy Patterson I've never scuba dived before but I've watched most of Dive Talks video's and the number one thing I've learned is to not panic and stay calm!!!
I’ve always been so ignorant that I didn’t even realize how dangerous it can be, all this info is super interesting though even as a non diver
I try to tell people it's like the opposite of sky diving. Sky diving is the adrenaline pumping extreme activity. SCUBA diving is pretty extreme bc you are deciding to be ok with breathing underwater for a while. But in the paradise style of diving it's calm and quiet leisurely flight.
It's worth pointing out by SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE that the "cowboy days" of diving are past. The days of Jacques Cousteau pioneering the Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus and getting narc'd regularly are over and done... He and the many "Greats" of the business since have come and gone to see to it that this leisure activity or sport or whatever else you want to call it is just that, "Business"... Maybe a little unusual, but so long as you're following the rules that these pioneers laid out and some even lost their lives to learn, then no, it's not insane... and it's not required to have a death-wish.
We enjoy a level of technological progress and the pioneering spirit that's pushed the envelope literally EVERY DAY before we came upon this sport/activity. Just ten years ago, cave diving was considerably more dangerous than it is today. Rebreathers were still relatively new tech' and guys like Edd were still pioneering the FIRST prototypes of many of them... AND some of those prototypes failed catastrophically. Some of them didn't make it past the first test or two, and some (likely, since I'm not in the dive business, myself) may have cost lives when they failed in practice or the rules weren't so clearly known at the time...
I'm in my 40's, and I've seen the improvements in MY lifetime. There's a lot to be said about guys like Edd, doing their jobs and rescuing or recovering people to minimize hazards and public panic or knee-jerk restrictions and the rest... AND there's a LOT to be said about the guys inventing this stuff, redesigning these things, and being careful in every aspect of a new product or design and the competition to get deeper, go further, and do so on less for every new generation of such products.
My respect in full to EVERY ONE OF THEM... all the way back to Cousteau. They're ALL heroes for their drive, professionalism, and even the occasional arrogance with which they have all been driven toward the next great goal in their business. I may have only gone to a Discover Scuba place once, and I may well never do it again... BUT my hat's still off. ;o)

Non Diver here! Is Edd a real person? Every video I see with him is just insane to me. Part robot or something? Octopus like Woody? Like he might have the biggest pair I've ever seen. Does he have a fear? or is he one of those ppl who just doesn't or just shuts things off. maybe it's me since I'm a non diver and A lot of what he does is at the top of this sport and most ppl well like really no one else can or should do. I don't know other divers in the world but Edd seems to me like the Michael Jordan of Diving. The Goat! I would definitely like to hear him talk about his thought processes on dives and fears and how to block that stuff out lol so I can relate somehow. The dude is a beast! He has my Respect. I love these videos with him in it. you 4 breaking it down and the footage is awesome!

I'm advanced open water diver. Ed isn't so much a person as he is the son of Poseidon. lol But seriously. He'll either retire, or drown. I hope it's the former. He's the best, but some of what he's been able to do when it's life or death may be because nothing ELSE went wrong. He's a bonafide hero that's for sure. If the water gets him it'll probably get two for one because he will be trying to save someone who may or may not deserve saving. Compared to him I'm not even a baby, I've barely been conceived as a diver, but your first open water class will teach you that it's not usually one problem that kills people. It's when the dominoes start falling and the problems pile up. So we are taught to abort any dive for any reason at all.
The only dive I've ever aborted in my relatively miniscule experience of 100 dives plus a few I didn't log.
Sometime before the 20th dive I had a bloody nose from a previous dive in the atlantic. We had literal rescue divers on the boat diving for fun and they told me that it can happen to some people sometimes and absent anything else I was fine to dive. My wife and I jumped into the Atlantic in very high current from 20 ft until about 40+ feet, then no current. So we had a literal rope to hold on to to get to 80 ish feet while dodging an endless stream of jelly fish. I almost forgot about the jelly fish in the current. We got past the current and we couldn't get my wife's hair to stay out of her mask, preventing a seal. It was 50 degrees F on the bottom so we are wearing hood and gloves and I couldn't manage to fat finger push the hair back into the hood wearing thick gloves. Taking gloves off isn't an option because they are hard to get back on. My nose felt a little raw.
1. My nose feels a bit raw. No big deal. I feel fine and we aren't at depth to get narc'd. So I'm really fine.
2. Can't get an acceptable seal on my wife's mask after a minute of trying. Some divers with facial hair deal with a little water in the mask all the time, but my wife isn't used to that.
3. My wife signals she's very cold. This was our 3rd dive into the cold.
4. I signal to abort the dive. Because I have an annoyance in my nose, my wife is gonna have to clear her mask like she has a beard which she is not used to doing, and she's cold. Three little things. Miniscule things. Certainly nothing like having my O2 turned off on a rebreather, lol. But I was a scuba baby and still am by some standards, and I wasn't going to let 3 little things become any more things because those three little things would make any big thing worse. That is how not to die as a scuba diver. I followed the rules. I wasn't down with what was going on so STOP it before it can get any worse.
The kind of diving these guys do is something I have no interest in learning because I always want UP to be an option. The key to being safe as a scuba diver is just following the rules and having appropriate training. If you do that, you will be fine bc almost all deaths are preventable. Go learn to dive bro. It's amazing.
Ed is a professional...fighter pilots are professional...MLB closers are professional...my brother in arms Spec Ops are professional......shoot if you know anything of these types I listed they have jovial traits, arrogant traits..DEEP and intense mental focus to reinforce their particular abilities and last but not least...THEY RESPECT THE RISK...THEIR NOT IDIOTS OR ROBOTS!!
I've had a past in something similar I won't speak of.....but I can see in Ed his comical and YET DEAD SERIOUS!! HE IS FOR SURE THE GOAT!

Knowing what he has accomplished in the past, I can only imagine what it is he experiences and sees. Nothing good I'm sure. Dudes a complete legend and total badass. Ed your a hero dude!

As a non diver.... can I just say this video brilliantly illustrates how frog kicks actually work and the actual physics of it... you can observe the transfer of energy from Edd to the fins to the water. It's awesome.
Well there's a reason why they're called frog kicks! If you see it in nature, chances are it works. Especially if you are looking at fish crustaceans or amphibians etc when wanting to do anything ocean/water related

I always feel impressed when I hear guys like Edd Sorenson, Brian Kakuk, Steve Bogaerts, Lamar Hires, and others speak and they are accepting of people's individualities. These highly-experienced bona fide divers, explorers and instructors are the cream of the crop and they are receptive to different ideas; they do not go around saying everybody is stupid and dumb; they are warm and helpful when we contact them - I have contacted all I mentioned here and they always responded even though I'm a grain of sand in the Sahara.
It is always the SH**-HEADS who have narcissistic complex and Dora-the-Explorer complex who are rude and full of themselves.
Thank you, Edd, Gus, and Woody for shinning the best light possible onto cave diving!! We need more of that.
As a Respiratory Therapist I have a pretty good grasp on the things Edd is discussing in this video such as p02 and c02, etc. It makes watching these videos so much fun!
Interesting to learn that in your world as Divers it's called a Loop Volume. In my world it's called a Tidal Volume, or Vt. And when one takes a maximum breath it's called a Vital Capacity. We can calculate these things while performing Pulmonary Function Testing.
Anyway, good work you guys. I'm not a Diver myself, but I'm a huge fan of what you're doing!
I totally agree I’m an RN and find this content totally relatable. I worked with some very outstanding RTs during my career and you guys are life savers. People have not given you the recognition you deserve in managing COVID patients on ventilators. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Edd is a genius and a rockstar, love all the episodes where you feature him. Only other variable that I could think of would be that victim got tangled and was doing lots of work with very high abnormally high metabolic rate with doing skip breathing or less total breaths. I dont know very interesting story and discussion, I wish I would have heard y'alls two cents on what happened.
I watched this channel for about a year maybe a little less before I started my open water diver cert and everything I do underwater has Gus or Woodys voice behind it. Small adjustments to your bcd and breathing techniques and all that good stuff. I can't wait to take what I've learned from you two about cave diving and rebreathers and put it into real practice. You guys are awesome and a huge inspiration!
I've always wanted to dive, and finding this channel finally pushed me into starting certification courses. Right there with ya; Gus, Woody, and Edd's voices will always echo in my head while I'm diving. Every video is a constant stream of knowledge bombs!

What an effective way to put and end to rumours and speculations. I really enjoy this experiments videos. I can watch you dive, and I really enjoy that. It's interesting from a technological standpoint, and I think that I've learned so much about rebreathers that I think I could sketch a rough diagram on how they works. Last, but not least, I love experiments in general. It's the best way to test and to (as in this case) prove your hypothesis. Great work guys!
In all honesty a test like this in a pool is something I think everyone should so they can get an idea of whats what.

Cave diving is fast becoming that one forbidden fruit I just have to taste before I die. The technicals involved in this stuff are fascinating to me. I know I have found something when I turn on your videos and my heart gets moving a bit faster just listening to your descriptions. I’ve hated life since my brother died 10 years ago and I feel like I need something like a good cave dive to even start living again. At 42, I feel like I’m waiting to die already. I’m envious of you guys for doing something so crazy and adventurous. One day I’m doing it.
I love how the knwoledge complexity has evolved with time. If you watch older videos, you'll find Gus explaining the essentials of diving, and now we've reached a point where Edd himself is sharing his technical knowledge. This channel is an amazing journy.
Wow just wow!! Woody and you Gus in your Element is just inspiring!! To watch Ed and The “” Dive talk cameraman” Woodster and Gus smashing down diving doors like A swat team is just new ground. Bringing more light to technical diving with video evidence not hearsay not probability but video truth is a light we need shined on this incredible activity. I simply love the fact that Ed basically tells you straight up dive the set up you wanna dive that makes you comfortable to the safest it can be. Now boys and girls that’s a man with no ego at the top of his game telling you you don’t have to dive his set up and he can still teach you how to be the best that you can be. One thing that you have to admire is the level of passion these guys have for diving even though I am not as anywhere near passionate about diving I can appreciate the content based on the sheer level of passion and the in depth knowledge no pun intended

Not only is Edd just an American badass legend but you can tell when you're talking to a real pro because not only are they confident with what they are talking about or doing but they make you confident in what they are doing as well. I hope he's a regular on the channel, I feel like there is so much more to tell.
I am a respiratory therapist and love all of this! We have used subatmospheric oxygen in the NICU population and hyperbaric therapy for patients with wounds to increase PaO2. Love it!!
FiO2 falls in circuit and PaO2 falls in blood

Mr. Sorenson is an amazing human being. Ive always been interested in both diving and also rebreather technologies. The way he explains/talks/shows everything is just awesome. Between his amazing demeanor, his absolute superhero actions and at the same time, how humble he seems....If I were a diver, I would trust this man with my life as my instructor or to come save me if I were to be in a bad situation.

This is a great explanation with this video as an open circuit diver a lot of the technical stuff is at least comprehendable but the way you guys lay everything out in terms a non diver could understand is bloody awesome.

I love this channel honestly it's very educational especially when staying safe in the water I remember watching another youtuber talking about a young man who was a cave diver he wasn't a professional but he disappeared but his tanks were found outside the cave the people knew he was swimming underneath the metal door but seeing how narrow the cave was no way he could be in there and still I think about that family and they even paid professional divers from around the world to dive and they couldn't find him either I would love to go diving but being in a wheelchair now I doubt I'd be allowed now looking forward to your next video stay safe and god bless from Scotland 🏴🏴

Hey, just reaching out. You guys should maybe do an episode with someone from the tulum area and talk about the issue theyre having with the government wanting to develop a train system ontop of the largest cave system in the world. Im sure anyone whos a cave diver or interested in becoming one has heard about the issue and signed the petition but being that your audience consists of tons of non divers maybe it would be good to spread the word.

I'd just wanted to highlight Edd's latest comment: your computer is confirmation, not information. I think this applies for even recreational diving, as it carries an intrinsic heightened sense of awareness and therefore safety. Also, always good to remember my ppO2 classes. Great video, very educational!
When is a company going to make a dive mask that shows a HUD display in your goggles of your computer read out? So even if you silt out, you can still see your computer stats.

@@DIVETALK so I looked at that and it’s not quite what I mean by a HUD. I mean a display inside your goggles that is a faded read out you can either focus on, or look beyond. Like a fighter pilot helmet has for example.

I agree with your viewpoint of the rebreather being safer than open circuit. Hopefully one day rebreathers become affordable for the average diver. They really are simple machines in the end.

PPO2 of 0.72 at 90 ft.....ouch. Impressive demonstration. I'm an OC diver but really appreciate this demo as CCR is something that interests me more and more as the technology develops and improves. Great content- keep up the great work
This was great. This is exactly the kind of technical information that someone with no diving experience but a lot of biology and chemistry and physics would need to understand qualitatively what goes on with a rebreather.
I do still wonder how much dead space there is in a rebreather. It seems like that would increasingly remove the effectiveness of the scrubbers the more the dead space to counterlung voume ratio increased.
