Alla Prima Portrait Painting | 4K Acrylic and Oil Painting Demonstration

I only had a couple hours to complete this study so I did a quick underpainting in acrylic to lay the groundwork for the final layer of oil paint. Acrylic underpaintings can be really handy because they give you an idea of where to go with your drawing, colours and values while also being perfectly dry to work on top of. If you work with an oil underpainting of some sort (for doing a sketch in particular) it can be a bit more annoying trying to get that nice finish you can easily get when you have a dry underpainting. For most of my other videos on the channel, because I don't normally like to mix and match mediums, I'll do an oil underpainting, wait for that to dry and then begin on the next layer maybe a day or two later.

Nope! I sometimes do tone the canvas, but I usually just like to work right on the white canvas.
