  • Hey everyone,
    The outdoor bog gardens are awake and there is so much beauty to share with you all! The Sarracenia or North American pitcher plants are the highlight in this video, where I show you around and talk about how I care for them. Sarracenia are herbaceous perennials in zones 3-8, possibly 9. Their native range spans from Canada to the Florida panhandle. S. purpurea being the most cold hardy to zones 3-5. While most other species would be suited for zones 5-8. We are in zone 7(b) and the are thriving! They grow naturally in wet habitats, so I keep the wet or moist at all times. Sarracenia never want to be dry. They can be grown in larger containers without holes to keep water in, or pots constantly sitting in a couple inches of water. You can see the wooden square frames I made and added pond liner to create the bog effect. The medium is roughly 80% peat with the addition of 10-20% sand. Perlite looks unsightly! The rain keeps these watered for most of the year. In the summer months, I use RO to keep them wet. I usually have to water 2 or more times per week when the temps are above 80 and full sun. Sarracenia LOVE full sun. The pine needles help keep the roots cool in summer, keep out weeds and insulate the rhizome crowns in winter. Possibly adding a boost of acidity to the soil? Although some growers do well indoors, these perennials are made for outside bog conditions. If you only have indoor space, then try Sarracenia purpurea var. venosa. It's a more southern form of the species and use to mild winters. It stays short , which makes it great for limited space. 6+ hours of strong light per day will keep it happy, usually in the form of a grow light. One thing to keep in mind if growing outdoors in a bog or container setting, is wind protection. Strong winds can easily break fresh spring pitchers.
    If you love natives or just weird plants, with minimal effort you can easily grow striking Sarracenia. A bog garden is easy to make and I''ll have to do a vid on creating one. Every year they will get larger and the spring flowers are a joy!
    Well, I hope ya'll enjoy the vid and let me know what you think!
    Thanks,
    Dom

    Awwwww. No Psittacina love? :( Lol JK. The parrots are probably my fav Sarracenia. I think people overlook them because they tend to look a little plain, but in the wild, I've come across all kinds of different ways they can grow. Prostrate, straight up, or with bright red and bulbous traps to very windowy green and red crested traps. And it's a hoot to see them submerged, too!
    I love all your bog gardens and crazy trumpets. I grow my indigenous species outdoors as well, alata and psittacina. I have had success over the past year with an indoor bog garden in a grow tent I keep in the house. But dude, after seeing all of YOUR crazy hybrids, I'm gonna have to venture out!

    Oh these plants rock, I adore your tour vids 🤩 The hats on the Reptilian Rose are so fancy~ I’m also in zone 7 (NJ) and just set up some planters with sarrs and venus’s this spring, do you do anything other than the pine needles to protect your barrel planters? Additional is probably not needed if they can survive zone 9 but I’m Nervous 😅

    Absolutely love this, I have a few sarracenia and traps and dews but now I want a lot more and want to build a bog garden in my backyard. I'm in Zone 8 in Texas by Dallas and our weather is ridiculously random at times but I pray they thrive outside over here. So, pond liner, peat and sand, good moisture and rain water and/or distilled or r/o. ...but how do I get my hose to spray out some r/o? Dom, I need your guidance.

    • @redleafexotics4722
      @redleafexotics4722  Před 3 lety

      From what I’ve seen, growers can grow them outdoors there:) as long as they stay wet and your provide rain or reverse osmosis water, they should be happy! You can fill a bucket with RO water and use a pump to get it to the plants. Hope that helps!

    Do you include any sort of drainage holes to prevent flooding during the rainy months?

    • @redleafexotics4722
      @redleafexotics4722  Před 3 lety +1

      The large beds don’t have drainage holes. The water rarely gets to a point where it’s just like a pool. The smaller container and barrels have holes tho. They like a little flooding here and there :)

  • @rogadev
    @rogadev Před 2 lety

    So, I tried to stick my sarracenia outside this winter so that it would go dormant. It didn't. Now it's starting to bloom. Granted it only got below freezing for maybe 15 days this winter, but I still have 4 very large and healthy looking pitchers. Should I cut them off? Let the new growth do all the heavy lifting? What should I do with the flower?

    How often do you change the peat and sand in your outdoor bogs? Also, how do you water?

    • @redleafexotics4722
      @redleafexotics4722  Před 3 lety

      Hey Jerry,
      Being these are only a couple years old I don’t plan on changing the peat anytime soon. I’ve grown purpurea in plastic lined beds for over 5 years without changing the medium. As long as they are staying moist they should be fine for years. I would say the potted plants and smaller containers would benefit from dividing the plants and repotting them roughly every 3 years or when they look like they are too clumpy. The big beds I don’t plan on changing the peat. Maybe add more on top if it sinks down. I’ll update as the years go on tho:) As far as water, maybe 2-3 times per week in the dead of summer. It depends. Most of the year they are good with the rain.
      Thanks,
      Dom

    how do you keep fungal gnats and pot worms from growing in the bog beds? I have potted plants that are marginal plants and i keep them damp to wet, and I'm always killing tons of them. I'd use diatomaceous earth or an insecticide but i use my plants for terrariums.

    • @redleafexotics4722
      @redleafexotics4722  Před 3 lety

      A small greenhouse or cold frame works. For larger beds native grasses and perennials helps hold them up. The metal circular wire supports found at most garden centers work well too. For this reason, I want to grow some in a small
      Greenhouse for absolute perfect specimens. I still loose pitchers to the wind. Thanks!
