When I was growing up I spent a lot of time with my mom's aunt, she passed away in 1979 at the age of 96, she and her brothers and sisters (13 total ) were all born and raised in Key West back when fresh water and other a Essentials came in by ship, boy I learned a lot from her. Someone from the government would actually come to your house and help you plan your garden for each successive planting throughout the seasons so you could have success. They would come back to visit throughout the seasons and actually give a certificate and post it on the garden as a successful Victory garden. ALSO, during harvest they would open up kitchens for the women to go and can their harvest to be able to put their food away. I could go on and on about it because it's really a passion for me to research and implement.

I thought because I live in a camper in an RV park I could not have a garden--but Doug and Stacy kept saying do what you can where you're at so I did! I asked the Park owner if I could grow a garden and he said because I asked I could! I have 6 kiddie pool gardens that kept us in fresh produce all summer and greens until late Oct. The last of the carrots and potatoes went in the stew pot last night! Last fall we made mini high tunnels to cover the pools so this year we can start earlier and go longer. Where there's a will, there's a way! Thanks Doug and Stacy!!!

The fact that you and Stacy have learned so much and built all of this in only 14 years, is so awesome and encouraging. 4 years ago, my husband and I spent everything we had on a Skoolie, which was intended to become our home. Saying we were "scammed" on that deal, would be putting it nicely. But only a year later, we found the home we never thought we would have; and now we have our little fixer upper on 3 acres. So much can change in so short a time! I'm so grateful to be learning now, so we can raise our kids with this life knowledge that has been forgotten to modern day conveniences. It's just so rewarding to return to this way of living, and abandoning dependence. I love your winter planting box. That corrugated plastic sheeting is a great idea! I'll be borrowing that.

About 10 years ago, our small city/town were about to pass a law that we can no longer have backyard chickens. It was motivated by a couple people in town that were keeping chickens completely inhumanly... neighbors didn't like the smell. We organized a chicken organization, holding meetings in backyards with our chickens. We presented to the city our rights to feed our families, oddly enough we actually found a historical newspaper of our city telling people of of city that "its your patriotic duty to raise chickens" Since then so many more now raise chickens.

I live in apartments too and don't have anywhere to have a garden right now - saving to buy property that I can homestead on.
I did a bucket garden last year on the patio and some of the yard space I thought I could get away with taking up without getting a headache over from management. Everything I grew was in 5 gal buckets except potatoes, which I grew in big tote boxes. I bought bags of dirt from the farm store in town, and some composted cow manure to mix in.The 5 gal buckets I bought from there too. The tote boxes I got from walmart. Drilled holes for drainage in the bottoms and filled up the containers with dirt. I started everything from seed in the living room in front of the slider windows, about March I think, so I had plants to put out when it got warm enough It worked out pretty good for me, it being the first time ever trying to grow food that way. I grew tomatoes, potatoes lettuce, melons, peas, cabbage, strawberries, bell peppers, carrots, onions, and some other stuff. I didn't grow a whole bunch of any one thing that I could can - I don't know how to can yet even if I would have. But I did grow enough that I had fresh vegies and some fruit all summer which made it possible for me to stock up on store bought canned goods.
So as the saying goes where there's a will there's a way. And God provides and makes a way to get through stuff. I'm 60 and disabled as well, still was able to do more than I expected I would be able to do. I'm going to do it again this coming summer and try to add more stuff to my little garden

I'm so grateful for all the knowledge I have from those hardworking parents and how much comes back to me as I plant and preserve my food. No animals, but may consider a few small ones since I'm now only taking care of myself.

I've always been a huge advocate for victory gardens. My folks were of that era so I grew up with fruit trees in our yard and a garden. In college I petitioned the city council to let a group of us use a plot of land next to a park for a community garden. I was a single mom, organized other single moms, and we won. Local farmers heard and helped for free. One plowed up the field, another dumped cow poop on it for us. We had plots and one plot we all worked on for the local foodbank. It was awesome! You have to think outside the box, and it doesn't hurt to ask questions and give ideas. Go to your city council meetings!

We went from 9 eggs a day to 26 in just 2 weeks. We have 70 chickens, in which 30 are pullets. We let them have free rein, and that has saved us a great deal in feed. We grow vegetables in the summer and have for the past 31 yrs. So much satisfaction in eating meals that you grew yourself. I am just so grateful that I live in a small farming community where almost everyone usually has some vegetables growing in their garden. I love that you went through the Clyde’s Garden Planner. I got one and used it last year even though I was only able to start with containers. I didn’t realize it had a place that shows companion planting. I hope to add more this year!
Thanks for all you and Stacey do to encourage us!

You can do a lot with container gardening. I've gotten quite a few cherry tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, raspberries, and leafy greens out of pots. This year, I'm fixing to start with potatoes.

For 8 years we lived in the city limits of a small town. We tilled up over half of our front yard and planted a garden right near the street. It was gorgeous and my neighbors loved it. They would slow down or even stop to admire my beautiful vegi garden. Of course I would share a little with each of them and they were thrilled.

We have been on a more self sufficient journey for a couple of years now! Absolutely love your videos, hoping to get fencing supplies soon so we can once again expand the garden. Last year my goal was to preserve at least 100 jars of food- whether through canning, dehydrating, or fermentation. I feel so blessed to have passed my goal! Y'all are awesome and Stacy's fermentation videos helped me so much. God bless.

Good for you! I usually cannot a large amount of what w
I produce on the homestead too. However, propane for the stove has gotten very expensive, so this year I will be doing a lot more fermenting and dehydrating in my sunshine dryers. May YAH Bless

Exactly. In our town we can have 6 hens and no roosters. My neighbors still complained that I had a rooster, but its my hens laying eggs every day. When I got a rooster later my hens were more quiet and the only time he crowed was in the morning and at night when he was calling them into the coop. Other than that he made noise to warn when the neighbor's dogs were attacking my hens. But the complaints on the noise stopped when I did actually get my rooster.

Im glad you brought that up. I have a doctor note for emotional support chickens. Last time we got rid of chickens bcuz village asked. But in spring we are getting hens and will not comply, even if they sue us, we will stand strong. Pray for us.

Doug and Stacy, I have to admit you two were responsible for getting me motivated 7 years ago! I come from a farming family, that as a young person I couldn’t get away from fast enough. You two opened my eyes to what has and is going to happen. It motivated me a lot! We have put in a garden, greenhouse, small orchard and small vineyard…plus chickens and rabbits. We are nowhere near producing what you are, but working hard on it. Just got out of surgery yesterday, and am eyeing my potatoes chitting with hopes I can get them planted next week. We are in zone 7A. May God Bless you for the wonderful things you do!!!🥰🙏

We are trying to expand our garden for next year by using feeder pigs to plow the land this spring. We are on very heavy red clay, so anything to help the soil is needed. We have had our ducks in my garden this winter. We shall see how that works out this year! Already planning and starting my sweet potato slips!

@@sonjafoust9154 From a hillbilly here way back up a 3600ft holler in NW NC with red clay: Hog waste is similar to human waste in that you don't want to apply it directly to a garden. Parasites and worms transfer easy between hogs and humans through waste. If you'uns are fixing on waiting a year before digging in a garden then you should be ok provided that garden spot gets full sun in the summer. Sun will break down a bunch of the bad stuff in the manure. Ducks and chickens don't have similar waste to humans/hogs so they're great for garden prep. It won't hurt to run a tractor rake, or disc it lightly (don't go deep) in mid-summer to break up the turds.
For whatever reason I've always had good luck with kennebec taters in clay. The only thing to watch for is that you don't pull your taters out of clay when it's wet as the dirt will stick to them. Pull your taters when it's dry. Growed out nigh 400lbs of taters last year. My daughter and I filled up 3.5 laundy baskets full. Still eating on them down in our root cellar.

Don't lose the faith Doug, Those that sell out should be purged or no longer patronized. It is with all of the tribe working together that we leave what is no longer of use and grow together as one. I love my planner. It really puts things in perspective for growing as well as the storm that is brewing and building. Your lamb is not the only part of the flock that is hungry, Thank you for feeding the cyber-touched flock here and in your heart! Love and Light!
