Lang Lang Master Class at the Sydney Opera House

- On 9 June 2011, international piano superstar Lang Lang gave three young Australian piano students the chance of a lifetime -- a master class at the Sydney Opera House.
Presented by the Sydney Symphony, The Lang Lang International Music Foundation and Credit Suisse, the master class was a chance for these young students to learn from a musician the New York Times calls "the hottest artist on the classical music planet".

It's funny how I always see these Lang Lang haters on every video coming in here and saying he's bad or a terrible musician with no real good reason. The guy spent his childhood playing 8+ hours a day and has become a world class pianist. He does workshops at almost every big music university in the world, and he doesn't voluntarily go there, they request him to come there... What you should be saying is that you don't like his interpretations, but I don't think you get any right to say he's bad.
The Lang Lang haters are either ignorant or jealous.Lang Lang is still growing musically however, but he was born with a mechanism the likes of which this world has only seen a handful of times.

well bad is purely subjective, so if you don't like someone technically you can say it's bad
Lang Lang is just stunning critical thinking, performer, teacher with heart and soul and humor and warmth and love!

Its ok to be taught how to express a particular passion when you are in learning stages, the masters words are valuable. When you understand how to express passion on the piano and can sing it from your heart via your hands and piano, it is here where you no longer need to be told how to play something because that product is your interpretation.

@marce11o Oftentimes a masterclass can demonstrate to a student that the student can occupy a much larger ( or more focused) expressive space than they currently do. Its the equivalent of taking somebody who is assuming they only have a shoebox to work in, and walking them into an aircraft hangar and saying " All this is yours. You can do what you like with it." The master doesn't own it. He plays in that space. Going there doesn't compromise the student's individuality. It can enhance it.

@marce11o The point of a masterclass is to be coached and given advice from the perspective of a more experienced individual. You will notice in performances and recordings of repertoire across all instruments there is a very general correlation in interpretation. This comes from generations of coaching, MASTERCLASSES, and knowledge dating back to the pieces eras. It is more so constructive advice than a command. Being helped with interpreting a piece("being told") has matured my playing by far.

@marce11o The very general outlined interpretation is what you will across all recordings by virtuosos, each personalized by their characteristic playing. What you get form masterclass is different because it is you in the flesh playing not you imitation a recording. I don't know about you but every virtuoso, professional musician, and collegiate player that I've known has conducted or has benefited from a masterclass. Obviously they are doing something right.
I just figured out what love is and I didn't even take the class.

Record yourself. Be your own adjudicator. Its not sports. Music enjoyment is subjective. Academic authorities don't even agree on a given professional recording artist. It basically comes down to the question of why do I play piano and who is this for? Masterclasses thwart individuality. Its an exercise in power, control, collectivism. You don't need it but if you want it that's your choice. You can teach technique but expression comes from you.
@marce11o I don't see the object of the masterclass as copying the master or mimicking the master's expression. Even so, as long as you are grounded in your own sense of self there's no harm in trying out somebody else's way of doing things. We do this as we grow and learn anyway. We pick the things that resonate with us. I might disregard some of LL's interpretation yet still choose to embody his playfulness.

@xHuntedGunzPCGx Whatever. Music making is very personal. Figuring out how to phrase something should be your own private joy. Who's interpretation is the standard? What you get from masterclasses you could get from listening to recordings you like but with out the condescension. Why do we play music? To play for who?

@marce11o I am having difficulty understanding where you are coming from. Having live interaction with a fellow musician is such a more unique event. Much different than simply plugging in to Naxos. It is unfortunate that you see the situation that way. Every virtuoso, musician, and professional musician I have known has attended, learned from, and/or conducted a masterclass. They must be doing something right.

the first girl is more of a technique issue. she's just too young to play like a proper pianist. she can play that song, but the clarity is not there. if you hear a professional pianist play it's quite obvious and technique just doesnt come in one day
Age does not matter with the piano, the nain fact is that she has a brilliant talent and people shouldn't put her down for being 'too toung'. Im a grade 8 pianist and had scholarships all around the U.K and have taught masterclasses and I'm only 15, she only looks say, 2-3 years younger? Maybe even older so my point still is standing of, age doesn't make you a better pianist, if you have the right feelings towards playing the piano and have the courage to start to play it (and definitely at her standard of a grade 8 piece) then you, and only you, can be as great as a pianist as you want, but until you have that moment, you will never be one. That's my perception of this.

+johannsebastienbach I believe Lang Lang was noticing an esthetic quirk in her playing -- the break or pause, which happened two or three times in this brief excerpt -- that would come to be problematic in her later concertizing. I found it an unpleasant idiosyncrasy -- possibly the girl's attempt to carve out a unique style -- that Lang Lang was right to pounce on.

I really hate the second guy. He's so arrogant with his bow tie. The main reason he annoyed me was because he said hes from East South Wales which is near Gundaguy (?). Who the hell knows where Gundaguy (?) is?
