    I wish program/app offered a lifetime purchase option. I love Shaper3d but can't justify the 20 a month for a hobby. Lifetime free user I'll stay I guess.
    I love your Shaper3d videos!

    I've never heard of Shapr3D. It's nice to see so much competition in the 3d modeling world.
    9:02 Push Pull is only for extruding "normal to" a face. Use a window to quickly select only the mitered face then M for move and you can drag it horizontally to change the length. After activating the move command you can tap the right keyboard arrow to constrain it to move in line with the red axis. Type in the distance moved and it will move that exact length.
    12:36 Draw an angled construction line for the new angle, another construction line on top to define the overall height and another for the bottom of the joint. Now rotate the face to match the new angle. Use a window to select only the edges needed to adjust the height to the guide lines you already set for both the top surface and the mortise. This is for pivoting at the top to change the angle. Add the height guideline to the bottom if you're pivoting off the bottom. Super fast and easy.
    15:53 SketchUp files drag and drop directly into VCarve Pro with many options for importing. Not free compared to Fusion but a fast and efficient workflow from 3d CAD to 2d CAM.

      THANK YOU! I was hoping someone else pointed out the move tool for the 9:00 mark instead of scaling. I mean, we all learn differently, such as learning the move and push/pull tool before the scale tool, ergo it's the go-to method for resizing something along one axis. Are you active on the SketchUp forums?

      I used to go on there, but haven’t for a year or so. I never thought of using the move tool for changing angled surfaces before this. It make sense now since it’s a surface modeler and the faces are treated as different surfaces lol

    Unfortunately for me, just too dear at $20 US a month for my woodworking hobby. Would love to have a version thats say $5-10 a month or buy it just the once at a good price. Doesn’t need to have all bells and whistles. Think they are missing a fair few people signing up because of the pricing. Would also be nice to have certain templates pre loaded to select from so one doesn’t have to create everything from scratch. For woodworking there are plenty of boxes one could adjust and reuse for projects. I really hate sketchups way of entering a size and with no easy way of changing it on the fly compared to shapr.

    Great video! I'm a little late to the party, since I *JUST* heard of Shapr3D. Looks like they've increased their price, though, so it's now the same price (per year) as Sketchup Pro. I wish it were possible to merge parts of these two programs. The modeling looks great on Shapr3D, but I've come to rely too much on extensions like OpenCutList in Sketchup. Incidentally (and someone else may have mentioned this in another comment)... the part where you said it's difficult to resize the piece with the 45° bevel cut in Sketchup.... would actually be really easy: just select the four lines that make up the end of the piece, and then use the Move tool to shorten/lengthen the piece as needed. It'll preserve the angle.

    The type of geometry sketchup uses already kinder disqualifies it when compared to shapr.
    A lot of “sketchup is easy to learn” goes puff into thin air the moment u need to model details or adjust the geometry. There sketchup really shows that it we made to visualize houses and blocky design and it detailed work.
    Easy to learn with sketchup means limited toolset and abilities too !!!
    What it currently has as an advantage is the component and uv texturing tool while sketchup uv unwrapped is also pretty basic

    Can you export a parts / cut list for woodworking in blender?

  • @stevenrogers4018
    @stevenrogers4018 Před rokem +1

    I'll start with that I pay for Shapr3d and Sketchup and am not paid by either one like this guy in the video. He does have a lot of great videos for shapr3d though, but clearly biased.
    Sketchup is overwhelming at first but it also wasn't designed for the ipad. The simplicity of Shapr3d is amazing, virtually no learning curve, and it's so easy to sit and design with the pencil.
    Now I use both for woodworking, as a hobbyist mostly, and often in conjunction when I've done bigger projects like my kitchen. I've spent a decent amount of time on both now and there is a reason you never see actual woodworkers using Shapr3d but instead using Sketchup. THE CUTLIST capability on sketchup, without it shaprd3d doesn't cut it (see what i did there) leaving it as concept drawings! **talking about woodworking here** Until the create that function sketchup will always be the best for woodworking and now they have an app for the ipad (haven't tried it).
    Shapr3d is best used for 3d printers and/or my Shapeoko CNC router; where high precision really maters, CAM applications. Most casual woodworkers, like myself, just want straight lines, don't need to spin a cabinet around to see if its perfect, and simply don't need that high level of detail that Shapr3d offers nor want to drop 1k on an ipad and ipad pencil (I did though). I just tried the desktop version of Shapr3d and it's a joke next to sketchup, if you have to use a laptop get the free 2017 version of sketchup. All that said, I use the free 2017 version of sketchup and it's great.

    • @BevelishCreations
      @BevelishCreations  Před rokem

      I’m biased only because I actually like Shapr3D better. I have also paid for both programs before. I stopped using Sketchup the moment I found Shapr3D. Even when I only used Sketchup, I never used the cutlist extension because it was inconsistent and I always preferred making my own cutting diagrams. Also, Sketchup 2017 is nearly unusable now if you use a Mac, which I do

    I’ve made quite a few false starts with Sketchup because people said it was sooo easy to wrap your head around, yet I never found it very intuitive. At all. I can’t remember what steered me to Shapr3d but that program is very easy in comparison, especially using the pen. Right now the free program does it for me since my designing would be sporadic at best and entirely hobby related, but it would be nice to have a bit more that 2 designs going at once, just to keep them saved. It would also be nice to be able to create that technical drawing because one of 5he things I want to design is basically a “room”, except metal instead of wood, so having dimensions for all 5he stud as and whatnot would be handy. And how about a way to design components and save them to categories in a library? I know, a lot of wants for somebody using a free version, but $28/month is a bit steep for a hobbiest doing non-commercial work. Shoot, I’d take a one time purchase option good only for incremental updates. An upgrade fee for major updates, or even a full fee maybe. At least the user has the choice. Subscription based for private use blows great big goats.

The thing that bothers me most about any of these apps is that one spends the time to learn and become efficient with the app only to find out they have raised the price or changed the terms of use. I really like SPR3D but don’t use it enough to justify the price at this point anyway. I have been a CAD operator since the mid 80’s so I guess I’ll just keep using the free work version till I retire 😀👍

    I've been using Shapr3D for a while for modeling stuff for 3D printing. Nothing compares to the ease of use for that. Unfortunately I haven't found the same thing with woodworking. I really want to be able to design something and then create a cut list for the project to take into the workshop. Since the first level paid package doesn't include 2D printouts, and the next level is just too expensive for my hobby needs, I haven't moved forward with my Shapr3D renewal. Sketchup has announced an iPad version is forthcoming. I'm curious to see how comparable that will be to Shapr3D's tablet experience.

      For woodworking I’ve used the older free Sketchup 2017 version. I also use the freely available open cut list (OCL) extension and it is fantastic! It allows me to a) determine the lumber I need to buy and b) how I should breakdown the lumber. For my basic woodworking projects it works well and I recommend checking it out.
      That said, I did not know about shapr3d until watching this video and it looks very nice. I use Fusion 360 for modelling my 3D prints and shapr3d has some similar parametric capabilities. I will be checking it out for sure.
      Thank you for the very good comparison. Cheers 👍😎🇦🇺

    Thanks for your great video. I'm really debating which of the two tools I should use and purchase beforehand. I was actually more inclined to buy Sketchup Pro for €319 per year (which is not a small amount), but your video opened my eyes more. Shapr 3D for $299 per year seems to be more efficient for my needs. However, and that's the big question... I'm not just interested in furniture/wood design, but rather furniture in the direction of industrial design, i.e. designing wood and metal pipes with leather or fabric. However, what I haven't come across with Shapr 3D is a model (with instructions for the tools) to design the Wassily Chair by Marcel Breuer, for example. Can't you create a design like this and make it available as a video here on CZcams as well as in the Shapr 3D learning videos? There is a video like this from Sketchup on CZcams, but in time lapse without an explanation of how... If such a design is easily possible with Shapr 3D and the video shows how - I would immediately choose Shapr 3D. However, I'm still missing this and so I'm unsure whether it would be possible to design with it. Thanks so much.

    You do not use the push/pull tool in sketch-up to lengthen/shorten a plane that is not perpendicular to the x, y, z axes (red, green, blue axes) - highlight the perimeter of the non-perpendicular plane and use the tool to move the highlighted perimeter of said plane - everything attached to the perimeter (surface only) will follow. 1D lines make 2D planes, and stacking 2D planes (at the perimeters) makes 3D (hollow) objects. Hence, Sketch-up likes to build its 3D (hollow) objects by stacking/unstacking 2D plane-perimeters, and because 2D planes must have a perimeter you (stack/unstack) your 2D plane-perimeters by highlighting and moving the 2D perimeters. I am guessing here, but the likely reason Sketch-up uses 2D plane-perimeters to make 3D hollow objects is to minimize files sizes (bytes). A hollow 3D cube comprised of six infinitely thin 2D surfaces uses 99.9% less storage capacity and cpu's than a completely dense one.

      Hi I’m not sure which “flexometer” tool you mean. But I’m assuming you’re talking about the tool that make guide lines and then you draw along the guide lines? If that’s the case, that’s a difference between Sketchup and Shapr3D. Sketchup works more like sketching, where you use a tool (a ruler, a protractor, etc) to create guides, and then draw using a pencil. If you need to make a change to the skrtch, you’ll need to erase the sketch mark and start again. Shapr3D takes more of a traditional CAD approach where the sketches are updatable. So you make a random sketch line first, and then set dimensions to the sketch directly
