  • The United States is thought to be a very religious country. However, a recent survey says more and more Americans are checking "none" next to the question of religious affiliation. Lee Cowan reports.

    As someone who grew up in the Bible Belt in a conservative, evangelical family who forced religion on me, this makes me extremely happy.

      I'm sorry to hear that. We raised our daughter in a conservative Christian home, sent her to Christian school, and raised her in church. But she does not attend any church, or really live like she's a Christian. But I know she cannot run away from her Christian upbringing, even though she isn't attending a church. Church doesn't guarantee a place in God's heaven and eternal life!

      The strangest thing about it is that at one time I and my daughters dad were not attending any church. We were very much in the world and living the party life. But both of us have had a personal relationship with the Lord for over 40 yrs and have no desire for the worldly things. We enjoy attending church with other believers. We read God's Word and pray daily. But I will tell you this, when our daughter decided to become a prodigal, and do her own thing, she has had nothing but trouble and heartache. She's paid a high price for turning away from her faith. It's a price sh pays daily. It's sad as a parent to watch.

    Christianity was spread by military and forced conversations. Now people are starting to see that and returning to old religion and leaving Christianity. Christianity is a religion of war and forced conversation.

      Really? Well I have a church in my home town that was a bar for many years. That's the greatest trend. This country wouldn't be in the shape its in if it would return to the trend of living for God and obeying His Word. Which was the very thing that once made this nation so great. But now, many have turned from that way, and you see where it has gotten us.

    • @douglasjcox
      @douglasjcox Před 2 lety +1

      @@sharoncrawford7192 No, the country would not be in better shape if more people believed in superstitious nonsense like Christianity or any religion. And, Christianity had nothing to do with making the country great. Our government is secular for a reason. The men that drafted the Constitution were men of the Enlightenment and it was Enlightenment thought that guided them.

    I grew up in the Presbyterian Church USA . In college I got caught up in the evangelical movement and due to their poor theology lost faith. I finally returned to the Presbyterian Church, but view myself as a servant of Jesus more than a Presbyterian. The problem with the church in American is a drift away from Jesus and His teachings and towards politics.

    Atheists are just tired of religious people. It's important for people not to get too personal about it.

    Perhaps the churches have gotten way way too big. I say engaging in spriritual matters is a small intimate affair, best done in a small group. I meditate with somebody via facetime once a week for about 45 mins. If people wish to have religion, small is the way of the future.

      Consider the possibility that people want to socialize outside of the context of church...planning a meet up on Sunday mornings works because they have the time available, not necessarily to spite the churches or churchgoers.

      As an athiest, I never want to go to anything resembling a church again even if it's secular but I guess I can see why "athiest churches" exist. In heavily religious areas atheists are still sometimes looked down on, they could also have a heavily religious family and they just want to meet up with other atheists to get a break from Christianity, this allows that. I'm happy just occasionally chatting with them on the internet though.
      Also, skipping the Superbowl isn't a way of life, religion is still controlling politics to an extent and many atheists had religion forced on them by family even after they decided it wasn't for them so that's why some lash out against religion.

    Survey be damned. I think there are more "Nones", non-religious people, living in the United States than this survey suggests. I've always been non-religious. Sure, I've attended churches throughout my life, two of which I was a member. But I've learned early on that going to church doesn't make one a Christian.

    That isn’t the reason People are turning to it at all. The reason people are turning to it is convenience and entitlement. When you don’t believe that you have to live a certain way, or follow a certain guidelines in your life you can do whatever it is you want without consequence that’s a sense of entitlement and convenience

    Not all pastors and churches are bad. In this instance as well as others, stereotypes are wrong. Mankind sometimes fails at the task at hand. It will take extra searching to find a church that still cares.
